For thinking this is the dumbest thing ever to wear to the swimming pool?

This ridiculous thing. On a primary school age girl (maybe nine?) Looked like it's made of polyamide (swimsuit material), was super tight and probably breaks about ten children's wear regulations.

She was hopping toward the water, with an adult wandering along behind.

Fortunately the lifeguard stopped them immediately, but I cant quite believe that the person with them (maybe DGD) was actually going to let her get in the water.

Was with another MNer when we saw this so apologies if she posted on this first!

I want one!

jaseyraex · 16/09/2017 19:00

They do mermaid swimming classes where I live. They all wear those tails.

PinkHeart5913 · 16/09/2017 19:01

I don't think it's practical for swimming really Confused how daft!

amousehaseatenmypaddlingpool · 16/09/2017 19:01

She was hopping along the side of the pool. She wasn't swimming in it. She was about thirty seconds from slipping and doing herself some real damage.

Mermaid swimming classes?! WTAF?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/09/2017 19:06

Perhaps she was actually a mermaid? You're jumping to all sorts of conclusions here. Haven't you watched Splash?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 16/09/2017 19:11

Oh this is a thing now.

mermaid swimming classes

edwinbear · 16/09/2017 19:12

DD and I both REALLY want mermaid tails. I just swam the channel 2 weeks ago so pretty handy around a pool. It's basically a mono fin isn't it? Nothing wrong at all with learning to use a mono fin, but probably not in a public pool session and definitely not something to put on until you are actually in the water.

Or was it a swim suit with her feet sticking out of the bottom? In which YANBU.

Fekko · 16/09/2017 19:13

I read an article about these - aren't the really hard to use and a drowning hazard?

RJnomore1 · 16/09/2017 19:13

They look amazing but I believe eve they're white dangerous in and out of the water

Jakeyboy1 · 16/09/2017 19:16

Ridiculous at the local council pool however my daughter would if she could! On holiday in Tenerife they were doing photo shoots by the pool with them.

Subtlecheese · 16/09/2017 19:17

They're great with a proper monofin, but of course not suitable for public pools.

RubyGoat · 16/09/2017 19:17

Imagine needing a wee halfway through the session...

OlennasWimple · 16/09/2017 19:19

They're not safe for non-strong swimmers

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/09/2017 19:20

They look like a right job to put on.

I read an article about a woman that regularly dressed as a mermaid and went swimming in her local pool with glitter on her face. She said she always wanted to be a mermaid and you should never be afraid to follow your dreams.

It brought a tear to my eye. Grin

Minesril · 16/09/2017 19:22

You'd swim buttetlrfly with that surely? Pretty thick putting a kid in one though.

DJBaggySmalls · 16/09/2017 19:27

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties
I dont want to swim in glittery water!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/09/2017 19:27

You're probably better off just sitting on a rock brushing your hair Minesril

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/09/2017 19:29

I don't think you can complain about the glittery water Baggy that lady was bravely following her dreams

RonSwansonsMoustache · 16/09/2017 19:31

I think glitter is probably the least objectionable thing in a public pool Grin

DrSeuss · 16/09/2017 19:34

DD aged 6 has one which I bought from ebay. She loves it but only uses it on holiday in the hotel pool, I wouldn't consider it at the local pool. She swims butterfly in it for short periods of time but really prefers swim shorts and a rashie! I put it on right at the side of the pool and lift her in. No way can she walk in it!

NaughtyElephants · 16/09/2017 19:35

I was sceptical when I heard about these too, but have completely changed my mind.

DD had a proper lesson using the tail. It has a proper fin and works very much like flippers so the way you can propel yourself is amazing. It also works out the whole body as you have to swim from the hips to replace the regular leg action. And the class DD attended had a minimum swimming ability required which they checked before allowing anyone to participate, it was very well run and well supervised so no more dangerous than regular swimming.

I have no idea why so many people on MN are so joyless and keen to rubbish things that they haven't tried.

Toomanycats99 · 16/09/2017 19:36

My daughter had s mermaid swimming lesson. As part of it she had to prove she could swim a certain distance and also swim butterfly (at least a few strokes) before she was allowed the tail. Although not a speedy swimmer she is confident and can swim a fair few lengths at a time. She loved it but found it really exhausting. You are swimming in a completely different way.

I definitely don't think it's something for a public pool!

Viserion · 16/09/2017 19:38

One of DS friends had a pool party and the birthday girl was in one of these. It was at their school, supervised by the swimming coach Hmm.
Couldn't believe they let her in wearing it. Yet another reason why this coach is crap!

AuntLydia · 16/09/2017 19:44

My dad has been nagging for one for ages. I rang round our local pools and they're not allowed in any of them, I certainly wouldn't let her swim in the sea in them so I told her no. I don't think that's particularly 'joyless' - they're quite expensive and I don't want her wasting money on something she'd never use. I will look into the mermaid lessons though - they sound right up her Street and a good safe way for her to enjoy using a Mermaid tail
