For thinking this is the dumbest thing ever to wear to the swimming pool?

This ridiculous thing. On a primary school age girl (maybe nine?) Looked like it's made of polyamide (swimsuit material), was super tight and probably breaks about ten children's wear regulations.

She was hopping toward the water, with an adult wandering along behind.

Fortunately the lifeguard stopped them immediately, but I cant quite believe that the person with them (maybe DGD) was actually going to let her get in the water.

Was with another MNer when we saw this so apologies if she posted on this first!

She clearly identifies as a mermaid!

God, MN is so mermaid-phobic and bigoted.

Dad Grin Daughter, that should read! Although now I have the hilarious image of my dad wearing one of those..

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/09/2017 19:46

My dad has been nagging for one for ages
Bless him, a Merman.

AuntLydia · 16/09/2017 19:48

Grin maybe I'll get him a tail for Christmas instead of his usual jigsaw

Bluelonerose · 16/09/2017 19:49

Imagining your dad wanting to be a mermaid Grin

I'm sure I read somewhere they were dangerous.
But I am very jealous that I haven't heard of or had mermaid swimming lessons.

winglesspegasus · 16/09/2017 19:52

she can aspire to this
weekiwachee.com/mermaids/
pays very well ,too

I think that, properly supervised, for competent swimmers, and in pre-booked sessions (ie not in the normal pool time with loads of non-merpeople) no problem at all. Flippers can be tricky to use and annoying to other people just trying to have a swim, too. As can games of water polo. If you want to do that stuff and can do it a)not bothering other people with it and b) safely, then go ahead.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/09/2017 19:59

My nieces were desperate for mermaid blankets for Christmas, the ones you post your legs in to.

They used them for about 5 minutes and then discarded them as they just want to leap about and have fun and they're so restrictive.
The idea was much more appealing than the reality, probably much like these things. [grumpy face]

@AuntLydia

We did ours in Hastings if you are anywhere near that area.

AuntLydia · 16/09/2017 20:59

I'm not unfortunately Toomanycats - but thank you!

I do wonder if they'd help DS with his butterfly legs, as whilst he's a good swimmer, he just cannot keep his legs together for his butterfly kick. We did a submarine trip in Turkey once and the piece de resistance was a 'real' mermaid in one of these swimming past. 'Twas magical.
