Husband is booked in in the next few weeks. What is the recovery like? AIBU to expect him to be back to normal after 3-4 days? And I don't mean in terms of sex, just in terms of day to day stuff - household stuff, childcare etc...

ExH was back at work after 2 and on his motorbike after 3 days. No complications obviously.

SandyY2K · 16/09/2017 18:40

Everyone is different.

Limit activity after surgery. You'll need to rest for 24 hours after surgery. You can probably do light activity after two or three days, but you'll need to avoid sports, lifting and heavy work for a week or so. Overdoing it could cause pain or bleeding inside the scrotum.

dementedpixie · 16/09/2017 18:41

Dh was tender for a few days but back to work within 2 days. He had no complications either

MrsHathaway · 16/09/2017 18:43

Our doctor does them on Thursdays. DH spent the rest of the day and the Friday in tight pants and on painkillers, managed light family activities over the weekend, and was totally back up to speed on Monday morning. Tbh I sort of assumed that's why the snip man does Thursdays, in line with standard recovery.

BuzzKillington · 16/09/2017 18:45

Mine ignored the advice to take it easy for a day or 2 and played 2 lots of sport.

Don't do this.

Worriedaboutboy · 16/09/2017 18:47

It's on a Friday so he's booked Monday and Tuesday off work and working from home on Wednesday. Just wondering how much help he'll be able to hive with children - 2 under 3 and both at very demanding stages!

As I left the hospital (in a stupid manly style) I winked at the surgeon and said "what should I not do for the next 24 hours" his reply was "probably don't run a marathon". Within 48 hours I was running, having sex and doing the washing. Although you may want to give your DH a few days off the housework, but you need to provide lots of sexual stimulation to help recovery.

Maddy70 · 16/09/2017 18:48

My husband was black and blue after his and very swollen, took him a good two weeks to be able to sit down properly (driving was an issue) but his brother said he just felt uncomfortable fir the day and was fine the following day. Think it depends on the surgeon tbh

maras2 · 16/09/2017 18:48

DH had his 33 years ago this week.
Done on the Monday and back to work the following Monday.
He was a bit swollen and bruised but only needed 2 doses of Nurofen plus.
Best £90 ever spent (thanks mum) Smile

iamdivergent · 16/09/2017 18:51

My husband ended up very swollen, dosed up on painkillers and signed off work for a fortnight. He slept on sofa bed as he could not walk up the stairs for around 10 days.

He is normally very good with pain but this floored him. He has also said that the whole area has changed since (one is now higher than the other) so that has taken him a while to get used to. Sex around a two weeks after the procedure which was fine though he did feel a little tender the first few times.

MrsHathaway · 16/09/2017 18:55

Bollocks (pun intended). Yes it's a good idea to flush the plumbing through, but that doesn't make it her responsibility.

Though it reminds me ... DH had more of a psychological barrier than a physical difficulty in resuming our sex life (but it was fine once we did). In fact the second clear test afterwards gave us both a huge libido boost which has not dipped in the three and a half years since.

BuzzKillington · 16/09/2017 18:59

Yes, bollocks.

AlpacasPackOwls · 16/09/2017 19:00

but you need to provide lots of sexual stimulation to help recovery.

Hahaha good one.

Worriedaboutboy · 16/09/2017 19:00

Thanks for replies everyone. I thought he was milking the potential for a slow recovery to be honest but perhaps not....I'll try and be a bit more sympathetic and get prepared for a longer recovery time than I had in mind.

My DH drove home from the clinic he had it done at and was back at work after a few days and gym within the week. Walk in the park compared to all my sections ;)

Molehillfromamountain · 16/09/2017 19:04

My DH had his on easter Thursday, Friday and Monday were bank holidays, back to work Tuesday. He did very little with the DC 1yo and 3yo for a week and recovered really well, no complications at all. I thought he may have been a bit OTT initially and was a bit put out at having no help but his friend didn't rest and really hurt himself lifting his 3yo after his. He is still suffering 6 months later. He's had lots of bruising, swelling and pain.
I'm ultimately glad I put up the resting rather than have DH suffer (and complain Grin) for 6months.

DisneyMillie · 16/09/2017 19:12

Dh was a bit uncomfortable for a couple of days but that was about it. Didn't stop him doing anything after one day on the sofa. We were told no sex for 2-3 weeks as it could be painful but we ignored that and dtd after a week and it was totally fine.

nocake · 16/09/2017 19:27

I had it done on a Saturday morning and missed no days of work. It was a bit uncomfortable and I walked rather than cycled to work for a week but it wasn't painful enough to justify time off.

ShowOfHands · 16/09/2017 19:42

Depends on the man.

DH was black and blue down to his thighs. He ended up with several severe infections and cysts. It has never healed properly really. He couldn't ride a bike for months. Sex didn't happen at all and he had two clear samples immediately so the "you need to provide lots of sexual stimulation to help recovery" crap can be ignored. No woman EVER is obliged to provide anything sexual.

In comparison I've had 2 emcs and bounced back, needing no painkillers and back doing a school run 4 days later.

coldcanary · 16/09/2017 19:46

DH was knocked off his feet for the first day, then back at work and doing mostly day to day stuff (very slowly) after that. Mind out for infections though - that seemed to be worse than the operation for him.

BaggypantsCrimplesnitch · 16/09/2017 19:58

DH had his on the Friday (I watched Grin - he said the worst bit was the local, which felt like somebody squeezing his testicles hard), wore tight underpants for the next few days, and I spoiled him over the weekend. He was back to work on the Monday with no problems at all.

BoneyBackJefferson · 16/09/2017 20:01

it is probably worth posting at this point that 1 in 10 men suffer from long term pain resulting from a vasectomy.

Some of which can be solved by further operations and some that will always suffer pain.

numbers are taken form the NHS website.

(awaits flaming)

LadyTsunade · 16/09/2017 20:11

My dh was fine. I mean, he was sore and it was a bit ouchy afterwards, but nothing he couldn't deal with. The op itself though, the injection is apparently the worst part. Oh and it STINKS

Tighnabruaich · 16/09/2017 20:25

Mine went to the pub afterwards for a couple of pints of Guinness and was back at work the next day. It didn't affect him at all.

bloodyorange · 16/09/2017 20:28

Oh and it STINKS

What does?!
