To be angry I very nearly can't afford to start a new job

I'm just having a slight fear period S I'm starting a new job on Monday, I have to use a bus to get there, won't be paid until the end of October, and have £130 spare on top of my mortgage payments.

So.. I need £90 for all the bus journeys,
Have enough lentils,/ tinned tomatoes /rice / pasta to get by.. Just..

But won't be able to do anything else at all. I've not had income since 15th August..

It's stupid isn't it..

Sad

Do they do yearly travel card schemes at your new job (where you get the money for the travel card now and pay back over the year through your wages)?

Tailypo · 16/09/2017 11:32

I'm so sorry scary FlowersFlowers Is there a possibility perhaps that you could ask a friend or a relative for a loan to tide you over if you need money for anything else before the end of October?

LittleOwl153 · 16/09/2017 11:33

Were you unemployed between jobs? If so see if the job centre can help with buses?
If not see if your new employer can help - many will support bus passes for example - taken back from your wages, or give you a bit of money in advance if pay date after a couple of weeks if you explain your position.

LadyInDread · 16/09/2017 11:35

It's crazy. I'd love a scheme where you could get one months bus or train travel from your employer or benefits office on starting a new role.

I'd pay more tax happily for that. Gone are the days when jobs were mostly local and we could walk or bike to work.

Congratulations on the new job though.

LadyInDread · 16/09/2017 11:36

Cross post with Littleowl! Seems there are schemes. Hope you get sorted OP.

Alanna1 · 16/09/2017 11:37

Some employers will give you a small advance on your salary if you ask them.

AlphaStation · 16/09/2017 11:39

Perhaps borrow £30 from three people, for 1, 2, and 3 months, respectively?

AccrualIntentions · 16/09/2017 11:39

Try your council website or transport authority if you're in a city region area. Many have schemes, usually operated through jobcentres, whereby you can get a pass or vouchers for travel when looking for employment or starting a new job.

scaryclown · 16/09/2017 11:50

Thanks, I think I can survive but it's going to be a miserable October!

Congratulations on your new job though x

scaryclown · 16/09/2017 11:52

But it does make me angry that employers make it so fucking hard to work for them.. I could cycle but it's ten miles :(

scaryclown · 16/09/2017 11:54

Actually i' ve had a brain wave after expressing the panic.. :) buy one ticket. Then touted for lift share :)

Spurtle · 16/09/2017 11:54

I feel for you . . . but why is it your new employer' fault?

scaryclown · 16/09/2017 11:55

Because employers could pay weekly say for first months of employment

tiredbutFINE · 16/09/2017 11:56

It's pants, I feel for you. You are in for a boring few weeks. Can you try to see it as a kind of limited time "challenge" to spend virtually nothing/try and make a bit of cash on the side ebaying stuff, having a big clear out, re-watch dvds and books, plan some super cheap meals, that kind of stuff?

SerfTerf · 16/09/2017 11:56

It's crazy. I'd love a scheme where you could get one months bus or train travel from your employer or benefits office on starting a new role.

Birmingham does that. Brilliant isn't it?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/09/2017 11:56

I'm not sure how the employers are making it hard working for them Confused Have you explained the situation to them and asked them if there's any support/help they can give?

StinkPickle · 16/09/2017 11:56

I was with you until you started ranting about employers making it hard.

Why is it their fault? Hmm

scaryclown · 16/09/2017 11:58

It's just the frustration that it will be submitted stressful, just as I should be max personable!

OP posts:
OnionKnight · 16/09/2017 11:58

It's not the employers fault.

OhTheRoses · 16/09/2017 11:59

Season ticket loan or ask for a small advance.

DS started his first job on 1st September and doesn't get paid until the end of the month. I have bought him his season ticket, and subbed him. I don't know what he'd have done otherwise except I suppose a bank loan.

I'm really sorry. I wish I was your mum. But as the HR person I would ask payroll to sort out an advance for your fares.

insancerre · 16/09/2017 11:59

Have you checked all coat pockets, handbags, down the back of the sofa for pound coins?
Have you got anything to sell that you don't use?
Do you have a penny jar you can get changed?
Any Euros?
Tesco club card points?
Do you have a credit card you could get some cash put on, you will have ages to pay it back
Good luck on the new job

Bumbumtaloo · 16/09/2017 11:59

Is there anyway for the first month you could cycle closer to your new job? When I worked for the NHS we had a scheme for our bus passes, they had a very strict criteria to be able to park onsite. I used to cycle to the park and ride and then bus the rest of the way.

SerfTerf · 16/09/2017 12:00

Yeah, I don't think there's much mileage in blaming the employer. Salaried jobs are set up that way. Technically you could ask them for an advance, but who wants to do that as a new joiner? There should be local schemes.

SerfTerf · 16/09/2017 12:01

If you've got a local credit union, they might be worth a try.
