To be angry I very nearly can't afford to start a new job

I'm just having a slight fear period S I'm starting a new job on Monday, I have to use a bus to get there, won't be paid until the end of October, and have £130 spare on top of my mortgage payments.

So.. I need £90 for all the bus journeys,
Have enough lentils,/ tinned tomatoes /rice / pasta to get by.. Just..

But won't be able to do anything else at all. I've not had income since 15th August..

It's stupid isn't it..

Sad

It's a fair suggestion to get into debt For this (I would, tbh I'd be taking out a payday loan if my credit was crap)

BUT you need to be able to afford to repay the debt. And for many people living hand to mouth the extra money to repay it will
Never be there

I would do that to build my buffer is needed not just live until i ran out of money!

Not everyone has any spare at end of month even when covering just the basics.

Plus there are times when you can't save - when I was studying full time working kept my debts down didn't let me save the thousand I need to move to where the well-paying graduate job was.

Other time we struggled we'd had three months with just minimal JSA coming in - savings were paying the mortgage, utility bills and feeding us and the kids – none of which were luxuries or things we could opt out of. DH then found work – but we had to wait another month for a pay check while still having all the basics outgoings and DH travel into work. It then took months to build back up savings as after paying outgoings only small amount left over to save.

Two years before we’d had over 50 K in the bank – it went on house deposit so we didn’t have to move every 6- 12 months at whim of landlords and give our kids stability. So it’s not like we didn’t know how to save aggressively and cut to the bone.

When My DH was hit by a car going into work – though we 18 months later got an insurance pay out – initially we had lots of unexpected costs that ran through our buffer then. Last move for work reasons emptied our savings – despite us trying hard for it not to – and took time to build them up.

I also thought the aspiration was 6 moths savings rathe rthan 3 – but I don’t know many who manage to have that at all times.

Gosh Boom, you must know very few people then.

How on earth can you make such a generalised comment?

OP, if you have been getting benefits then it might be worth contacting the job centre and asking for help as you might well be eligible for help with transport costs for your first month. A friend of me was given enough to buy a monthly bus pass and also to buy a new suit and some shoes. He had been out of work for a long time hence the clothing allowance.

They offer the transport costs to lots of people who have been out of work though to help them in that first month.

I'm a teacher. I don't have a 3 month buffer due to being a single parent financing a child through university and having travelling costs of £200+ a month until recently. Also I booked a holiday last summer which I could afford but then Brexit happened and the cost went up 20% overnight, so that damaged my savings (was independent travel in the US so very little paid in advance). I rarely buy clothes, don't go out more than about once a month and then only for a quick drink at the pub. I don't smoke. I don't gamble. I can easily see how someone might have problems.
It isn't your employer's fault, though.

OP I don't recognize many posters but I recognize your name. I've commented on your threads before although I am s regular name changer so it was under different names.

You have said that both your parents are well off and that they are separated. Is there a reason that you can't ask them for help? I know you don't have a good relationship with either of them but surely if you have s job they might want to help you. Also what about siblings?

I'm not sure why you have started the thread. Is it just to rant? If so fair enough that is what AIBU is for but if you have started the thread for advice on how to get money then I don't think you have gone about it very well. Confused

AuntyEstablishment · 17/09/2017 17:16

OP, is there a reason you are only just thinking about this now? Was the job only just offered to you?
Isn't this the type of situation where you could have got a loan from a bank? You are in employment and you have a house, it doesn't seem like you would be someone who couldn't get a loan 🤷🏻‍♀️

ratstail · 17/09/2017 17:17

I started a new job two weeks ago and I was able to get a budgeting loan of £812 to help cover expenses before my first paycheque. If you're coming off income-based benefits and you've been on them, you'll be eligible. You have to pay it back, but I will budget enough from my new wages to cover that, and it's interest-free.

Iheartjordanknight · 17/09/2017 17:18

Maybe she can't afford to pay it back aunty

RB68 · 17/09/2017 17:18

The point is she is being expected to work 6 weeks before being paid when obviously there are living costs and have been since she last worked hence no buffer. Just ask for a pyt end of sept or for a sub loan for enough to cover travel expenses leaving you with a bit more to cope with in this month of working.

Just because you have parents with a bit of dosh its not always possible to just ask - especially if relationships are not great

Hi OP,

We've had a couple of reports so we are going to post our usual message.

We're awed daily by the astonishing support that our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns – but we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster (emotionally or financially) than they can afford to spare.

Sending you lots of good vibes from MNHQ.
