I've recently come into some money. I have a long standing friend in my life who I love dearly, living in another town a few hours away. Life has dealt her some unbearably harsh blows recently and she is unable to work due to disability and in fairly dire financial circumstances. I'd like to share some of this good fortune but she is intensely proud. What do I do here? I can't see her living like this, I want to share what I have. But I feel she wouldn't accept it, or I need to give it in such a way that she would or could accept it, I just don't know how. Any ideas, Mumsnet?

I agree with the poster who suggested telling her you're sharing it among close friends and family.

She's much more likely to accept if she thinks she isn't the only one you're helping.

As someone on benefits can I say doing it by solicitor or depositing it into her bank leaves a very obvious money trail which could get her in shit with her benefits.

A lump sum could get her in a lot of financial trouble if HMRC ask for a bank statement at any point.

I'd rather receive cash or a gift.

Is she living with anyone? If they work, the likelihood is she won't be on any benefits other than PIP, which isn't means tested.

RidingWindhorses · 16/09/2017 22:17

It depends what benefits she's on. DLA/PIP is not means tested, earnings/gifts will not affect it.

For ESA benefits you can have up to 16 grand in savings.

Ahh I just wanted to say how very kind this is. What an amazing friend she has op.
