To be so annoyed with this family on holiday?

Am on a long-awaited lovely holiday at a European resort. Booked for September as it would be cheaper and quieter, kids back at school etc, but still great weather. We have sun beds by the edge of the pool. Around us are other families (with babies or toddlers), couples etc. It's all been relatively quiet all week which has been so nice and relaxing. Then yesterday a family arrived with 3 children - two clearly school aged - and set up next to us. They were so loud all day, children running around our sun beds shouting, splashing us, a little annoying but I thought understandable (other than why are they not in school?) as they're just kids enjoying their holiday.

An hour ago they arrived at the pool and again have gone for the sunloun
ngers next to us. The kids are shouting and yelling as before. But worse, the mother has decided to play music on her phone, with no headphones. It's been going on for an hour now and it's really irritating me and spoiling my enjoyment. One of the reasons I chose this hotel (I've been here before) was for the peaceful poolside atmosphere (lovely sun beds, no music blasting out etc). I would've moved sunbeds to get away from them but it's filled up now and there aren't many other options.

AIBU to think they are pretty inconsiderate?? Sound of kids playing is fine, inevitable (although they are the only school aged kids here), but why should me and my family - and others around us - be subjected to their music? I want to ask the woman to use headphones but am not bold enough!

Hell is other people as the saying goes. A private villa may suit you better.

Have you a handbag? Start dancing around it. .

Iheartjordanknight · 14/09/2017 11:55

Why don't you just ask her to turn her music off or use headphones?

Figgygal · 14/09/2017 11:56

Just tell her to switch it off it's total knobbyness to do that in a public space

ZaraW · 14/09/2017 11:58

Stop being so British (assuming you are) and ask her nicely to use headphones.

bettytaghetti · 14/09/2017 11:58

Or just get chatting to her and find out the DC's school and then report them. Bwahaha! I'm in an evil mood this morning, clearly!

Witsender · 14/09/2017 11:59

The kids playing is neither here nor there, regardless of whether they would otherwise be at school. You wouldn't be unreasonable to ask her to turn the music download or whatever though.

In that case, just shut up and complain on Mumsnet. That will show her.

UrsulaPandress · 14/09/2017 12:00

Can you trip and accidentally kick her phone into the pool?

Or ask a member of staff to speak to her.

Tomorrow set up on two loungers on opposite ends of the pool. then switch to whichever one they don't head for themselves.

I would find it incredibly annoying so understand your frustration.

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/09/2017 12:03

Just move when/if someone else leaves. Incidentally, what music is she playing? Grin

BabsGanoush · 14/09/2017 12:04

We had this last year - and then all started smoking too.

KinkyFruits · 14/09/2017 12:04

There's no need to fume. Just ask her politely to turn it down or off. I swear half of the problems people post about on here could be easily solved with a 30-second conversation between adults!

KinkyFruits · 14/09/2017 12:06

I'm not saying she's being reasonable, btw. It is incredibly rude to play music without headphones in that situation. But you are letting it ruin a precious day of your holiday by not speaking up. So in that way YABU too, but to your own detriment only.

hana32 · 14/09/2017 12:07

They are also smoking!

If I'm not being unreasonable then maybe I will be bold enough to ask her to use headphones. My husband isn't so bothered by it, he has the wonderful ability to be able to mostly tune out background noise.

I would mention this to the hotel staff. Noisy kids is unavoidable but music with no headphones isn't on IMO.

2014newme · 14/09/2017 12:12

Is it quite a down market place?

category12 · 14/09/2017 12:14

Ask her to use headphones. If she won't, then talk to hotel staff.

coddiwomple · 14/09/2017 12:17

They sound awfully rude and annoying. I am always amazed by the amount of noisy children you have to put up with, when you pay to go on holiday during school terms.

Ask her nicely to stop the music, or complain to the hotel so they can send someone to tell her off. Good luck!

hana32 · 14/09/2017 12:19

Downmarket? No. It's a 5* hotel.

Agreed.

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/09/2017 12:19

The hotel might not care. Are there any signs saying no music?

Paaahahahaha THIS!

hana32 · 14/09/2017 12:19

They have gone off to the bar. The music has - temporarily at least- stopped!
