For not wanting to be obsessed with Goldie Hawn?

MouldyChipPan · 14/09/2017 08:29

When I first met DH we went to his parents and they sparked up this weird conversation about Goldie Hawn, went on about how much they all love her and started reminiscing about her various films, roles, characters, interviews etc. They then put in a Goldie Hawn film which we had to sit and watch and laughed manically throughout. DH was going along with this and acting the same.

This obsession has continued throughout our relationship and I find it weird and boring!!

Last night we popped to his parents for something and again the Goldie Hawn subject came up. DH was actively encouraging it and waffling on about his favourite GH film.

When we got home last night we sat down to TV and he starts putting on a GH film. I said "I don't want to watch this tonight, I just want to relax with a bit of telly" so he turned to me, smiled and pressed play!!! I said "well if you're watching this I'm going to bed to watch TV up there". He replied "I'm going to come up there and put "her" on your TV too". Hmm not thinking he was being serious I replied "yeah right" and went upstairs. I set the TV up, went to toilet and when I came back in the bedroom he was frantically trying to get the film on that TV! I said "look I'm tired and not in the mood for messing about so just put the tv back onto the channel I'd set it on". He smiled at me again (one of those "look how misheivous I am" exagurated smiles) and carried on trying to get the film to work. At this point I shouted at him and said "will you just fuck off with this Goldie Hawn shit? It's not funny, it's not cute, it's fucking boring. Nobody else cares about shit like this, it's boring".

He got all defensive and said "fine I'll leave you on your own" and he went off to watch the shit 100 year old film downstairs laughing like a loon every 5 minutes.

I can't be doing with it!! It's fucking weird and pointless. How do I tell them I don't want to hear about it anymore without sounding like a total killjoy?

I think Goldie Hawn is neither here nor there. The problem is your dh laughing manically at something you don't find funny and trying to inflict it on you. My dh laughs manically at internet memes and songs designed for 14 year old boys. It really winds me up.

You haven't got a Goldie Hawn problem, you've got a DH problem.

steff13 · 14/09/2017 17:57

In the time you've been together, you've never asked them what the deal is? Is she a distant relative or something? I mean, I like most of her movies, but she's kind of an obscure actress to have an obsession with. Why not Katherine Hepburn or Meryl Streep or any of the better other actresses out there?

Not to mention, the obsession itself is weird.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 14/09/2017 17:58

Folie à ... trois? Madness I tells ye, madness! I'd be heading for the hills. It's only going to get worse.

Peaceonearthplease · 14/09/2017 18:03

petalhead, I'm on it.

SuzukiLi · 14/09/2017 18:03

I'm going to have a Goldie Hawn film night now Grin
To be fair, my family is a bit like this with Will Ferrel!

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 14/09/2017 18:15

Bananamanfan That's Foul Play! I never see it on anymore, it was always on at some stupid time of night. Chevy Chase is in it too.

Bananmanfan · 14/09/2017 18:17

Thanks crumbsSmile it was always on the telly about 15-20 years ago.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 14/09/2017 18:18

It's probably full of really unpc humour, I only have vague memories of it but do remember thinking it was hilarious.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 14/09/2017 18:24

Pmsl at the whole family having a crush on Goldie Hawn.

It's fucking bizarre, wonderfully weird and I can totally see why it would piss you off.

Bananmanfan · 14/09/2017 18:26

Op, i think you should go on Mastermind with GH film as your specialist subject. You've probably picked up loads of GH factoids in your enforced viewing.
Yanbu- should have said that before. Tell them how you feel- I had to do this with dh's family re Robbie Williams.Grin

PetalHead · 14/09/2017 18:44

Will Ferrell?!?

See OP it could be worse!

winewolfhowls · 14/09/2017 19:17

I believe that the op is actually Ms Hawn herself.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 14/09/2017 20:09

You might have a point winewolf. The coincidence of a thread calculated to get people talking about their favourite GH film and the poster to Wittertainment asking for suggestions for three movies for his second "Hawnathon" makes me suspect that somewhere there's a junior PR assistant on a mission to raise Goldie's profile to get that lead in a rumoured Sunset Boulevard remake.

olderandnowiser · 14/09/2017 20:22

Ltb

SlugKiller · 14/09/2017 20:25

Is this in classics yet? Grin

UterusUterusGhali · 14/09/2017 20:51

What...I just...eh?

Puffpaw · 14/09/2017 22:02

GOLDIE HAWN, OBSCURE?!!!
Wtaf steff
She is an oscar winner, a golden globe winner, she is acting royalty.
That really was uncalled for.

Puffpaw · 14/09/2017 22:02

Meant to add a Grin there.

GingerLemonTea · 14/09/2017 22:19

Oh I love Housesitter & Saving Private Benjamin.
Goldie is a great actress!

Littlebelina · 14/09/2017 22:38

Was the film he was putting on Death becomes her as it was on syfy last night? If so you missed out.

Also love overboard.

Your DH family sound batshit but there are worse actors to be obsessed with. Imagine if it was Rob Schneider....

Shouldnotwouldnot · 14/09/2017 22:44

Become obsessed with Steve Davis. Put snooker on the TV 24/7. Dress like Steve Davis. Channel Steve Davis

WowserBowser · 15/09/2017 14:42

Housesitter is probably one of the films I have watched the most.

Oh I need a Goldie night now. I wonder if DH will be in.

happinessbythekilowatt · 18/09/2017 13:52

Added this thread to my watchlist expecting some more updates about their weird obsession, but alas Sad

tutorwho · 18/09/2017 14:30

I wonder if they like her new film with Amy Schumer?
