For not wanting to be obsessed with Goldie Hawn?

MouldyChipPan · 14/09/2017 08:29

When I first met DH we went to his parents and they sparked up this weird conversation about Goldie Hawn, went on about how much they all love her and started reminiscing about her various films, roles, characters, interviews etc. They then put in a Goldie Hawn film which we had to sit and watch and laughed manically throughout. DH was going along with this and acting the same.

This obsession has continued throughout our relationship and I find it weird and boring!!

Last night we popped to his parents for something and again the Goldie Hawn subject came up. DH was actively encouraging it and waffling on about his favourite GH film.

When we got home last night we sat down to TV and he starts putting on a GH film. I said "I don't want to watch this tonight, I just want to relax with a bit of telly" so he turned to me, smiled and pressed play!!! I said "well if you're watching this I'm going to bed to watch TV up there". He replied "I'm going to come up there and put "her" on your TV too". Hmm not thinking he was being serious I replied "yeah right" and went upstairs. I set the TV up, went to toilet and when I came back in the bedroom he was frantically trying to get the film on that TV! I said "look I'm tired and not in the mood for messing about so just put the tv back onto the channel I'd set it on". He smiled at me again (one of those "look how misheivous I am" exagurated smiles) and carried on trying to get the film to work. At this point I shouted at him and said "will you just fuck off with this Goldie Hawn shit? It's not funny, it's not cute, it's fucking boring. Nobody else cares about shit like this, it's boring".

He got all defensive and said "fine I'll leave you on your own" and he went off to watch the shit 100 year old film downstairs laughing like a loon every 5 minutes.

I can't be doing with it!! It's fucking weird and pointless. How do I tell them I don't want to hear about it anymore without sounding like a total killjoy?

I read your OP earlier and have spent far too much time (out of the house with no internet) trying to remember the name of the film where she played Private Benjamin. I asked my oh this lunch time who took great pleasure in telling me Hmm

I bleddy love Goldie Hawn. I secretly wish I was Kate Hudson so she was my mum (sorry real mum you are great but not a patch on Private Benamin).

Hahaha! My dearly departed mum was also obsessed with Goldie Hawn, so this has brought a smile to my face Grin

KinkyFruits · 14/09/2017 13:59

Overboard is hilarious!

CredulousThickos · 14/09/2017 14:01

Is this the curry stealing weirdo?

KurriKurri · 14/09/2017 14:06

That's so bloody weird, I mean the level of obsession is weird, the forcing it on someone else is weird, and GH is a bit of a niche choice for a whole family crush I'd say.

I think you need to develop your own weird obsession and bring her up every time Goldie Hawn is mentioned.

PILs/DH: Goldie Hawn is amazing
You: She's not a patch on Meryl though, I mean Meryl totally wipes the floor with Goldie, did you see her in Sophie's Choice ?

DH: Let's watch a GH film,
You: let's not - Goldie sucks, lets watch Out of Africa instead.

etc, until they understand what it feels like to have an actor you have no interest in rammed down your throat, and back off with GH lunacy.

lavenderbees · 14/09/2017 14:09

I do quite like her tho and her films are very watchable.Grin

Dahlietta · 14/09/2017 14:22

Oh, I cannot be doing with adults who are obsessed with celebrities, any celebrities, but you married him, OP! Grin

TyneTease · 14/09/2017 14:23

Is this one of those threads where the OP returns with a big flourish and declares, 'Ha! Now replace Goldie Hawn with Brexit/marijuana/grammar schools and looks what JUDGEMENTAL BITCHES YOU ARE NOW!'''

and we all do this Confused

DonttouchthatLarry · 14/09/2017 14:33

MyBonnieLiesOverTheOcean - I love the Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox! It's one of my favourite films (the horse Blackjack is great). I do have a bit of a thing for comedy westerns though - also love Cat Ballou, Blazing Saddles and Two Mules for Sister Sara Grin

Can't think of a bad film with Goldie in (and Kurt Russell was always easy on the eye too Wink ) I'll always watch one of hers (or his) if it's on tv.

Puffpaw · 14/09/2017 16:45

Meryl is a bad choice though kurri because he'll just say "ok, let's watch death becomes her on repeat."
I love Meryl and Goldie!

KurriKurri · 14/09/2017 16:47

Oh no - I didn't realise there was a cross over Grin
How about Judi Dench - has she managed to avoid appearing with GH ? Grin

WowserBowser · 14/09/2017 16:54

Now I like Goldie as much as the next person, but this is very weird Grin

This has reminded of when I was in labour and had copious amounts of gas and air and couldn't stop thinking about Scarlett Moffatt. Now I'm no super fan but I had to stop myself from talking about her. High as a kite but still had enough self awareness to realise the midwife and DH wouldn't want to join in.

TSSDNCOP · 14/09/2017 16:59

See on our family we loved Bruce Forsyth. All his shows, all his catchphrases if Bruce was on it was required viewing. We even called of dog Bruce.

My point being families are weird.

Also Goldie is great.

alltouchedout · 14/09/2017 17:02

I love Overboard... mostly because of Kurt Russell though.

Your DH and ILs are total weirdos.

MB134 · 14/09/2017 17:09

I'm not a huge GH fan but The First Wives club is amazing Grin

YANBU this would wind me up a lot.

MB134 · 14/09/2017 17:10

@TyneTease Do people make threads like that?Shock

BusterGonad · 14/09/2017 17:16

I love Overboard too.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 14/09/2017 17:16

YABU if it was Foul Play.

This sounds like your in laws have one of those 'in jokes' that aren't actually funny and only serve to exclude other people.

Firefries · 14/09/2017 17:21

BUT have you actually watched Butterlies are Free .. now that's a good movie. Great 70s vibe too.

DigitalGhost · 14/09/2017 17:31

Hahaha this is so weird!

silkpyjamasallday · 14/09/2017 17:45

Well he was being a bit of a dick trying to force you to watch something you didn't want to. And I'd find the family wide obsession very weird.

I have had a longtime obsession with the Olsen twins, before Pinterest was a thing I'd save pictures of them and links to interviews or magazine articles about them and made a slideshow on the computer so I could have them all in one place, it had well over 200 slides Blush Because this is obviously a weird and embarrassing level of obsession I don't tell anyone about it, although DP knows as he was clearing my laptop and found the slideshow Grin do you think PIL share the obsession with everyone who crosses the threshold?

VeryCunningStunt · 14/09/2017 17:48

Do you think they are all just winding you up?

Somebody's on a wind-up, for sure.

Bananmanfan · 14/09/2017 17:50

What's the one with Dudley Moore, where would be assassins are trying to get Goldie? She drives a Beetle & it has something to do with a cinema projectionist.

Therealslimshady1 · 14/09/2017 17:51

Tynetease, if you replace the word Goldie Hawn with "Chinese People" or "SEN kids" you can see how racist/disablist you all are...Grin
