Ironic as I find at the bottom of a number of right wing blogs (Order-Order & conservative Home) the most disgusting misogyny and racism.

I am really troubled by the suggestion that men suffer equal rates of domestic abuse. It seems to me to not have much to back it up but has almost become accepted as true.

On the other hand - whilst it's obvious the comments are lighthearted - I would feel really fucking uncomfortable reading about a group of men talking about women in that way "tell her to get home from work even if it's to make a cup of tea", "bury her under the patio", "cut off her sexual organs", "I'd never trust a woman with a job". Grim, whether applied to women or men and he has as much right to say that as anyone else.

Toadinthehole · 14/09/2017 06:14

BananasAreGood,

I probably shouldn't involve myself in this sorry and demeaning stoush. But I will say that the Dunedin longitudinal study found that women were as likely as men to prep perpetrate domestic violence.

The finding was not popular but I have not heard that it has been refuted.

woman11017 · 14/09/2017 06:23

For the male posters in this thread, a useful twitter account with some top tips on how to survive in a women's world, amongst other issues. Grin

CastIronCookware · 14/09/2017 06:29

I don't the "The Conservative Women" is affiliated to The Conservative Party in any way, is it?

woman11017 · 14/09/2017 06:32

A bit like the English Defence League has nothing to do with them either.

Brittbugs80 · 14/09/2017 06:37

I was recently a victim of domestic violence, I saw the comments as nothing but jest

So many are saying the things in the post were a joke, seen as funny etc but would that still be the case if the comments had been made by a man? Nope, there would be hell to play.

And according to more nonsense on this post, I'm apparently without a sense of humour because I don't find DV jokes funny (given the level of double standards and do as I say not as I do on this forum, I shouldn't really be surprised)

Also a victim of DV here and I certainly don't advocate joke telling about it. To me it's making it funny, light-hearted and potentially saying it's ok to do.

Sukitakeitoff · 14/09/2017 06:41

I read the thread at the time and didn't find it offensive.

But... If I saw a similar thread on a men's website I wouldn't feel the same way.

woman11017 · 14/09/2017 06:42

One man doesn't get killed every 48 hours by DV in britain.

If they did, DV would have been eliminated.

woman11017 · 14/09/2017 06:43

Tories do hate women almost as much as BME people and trade unionists.

But on their recent performance, I think the people they hate the most are the British.

FenceSitter01 · 14/09/2017 06:49

I'm sure if a bloke wandered in to this forum and advocated eg cutting his partners nipples off 'in jest' there would an uproar and Outraged-From-Tunbridge-Wells would be on the phone to the police quicker than shit off a slippery stick citing a thousand (ir)relevant laws

I do work with sufferers of DV (I don't like the word victim, personally), frankly what I see daily would make your stomach turn. So playing the 'I'm a victim of DV' card doesn't wash with me because I can guarantee no one in this forum has been beaten senseless with a baseball bat, had that bat rammed up their vagina repeatedly until they lose several pints of blood, had their head kicked like a football, all in front of the children. And that's the non identifying repeatable stuff.

CoteDAzur · 14/09/2017 07:15

"Dunedin longitudinal study found that women were as likely as men to perpetrate domestic violence."

Yes, Dunedin Longitudinal study where polled "Domestic Violence" behavior includes throwing something at your partner, threatening to leave, or become very upset if house repair work wasn't done. Once, in the past year Hmm

So, a woman who has become upset because husband won't get out of the couch to change the light bulb (once!) is written down as a DV perpetrator in this study, no different than the man who beat up, hit with a fist, or physically force their partners to have sex (acts also on the DV list).

Great study to equalise DV rates among men and women Hmm except that when you look into the data, some perpetrators have raped and beaten their partners to a pulp and others m got upset and threatened to leave, once in the past year.

Guess which kind of "perpetrator" women tend to be.

Agreed. (though it's not a competition as to the level of DV experienced). And would they find it hilarious and in jest to make DV comments under the guise of, "well we wouldn't actually do it and your stupid to think we would" I don't think so.

I'm still receiving counseling, as is my child to try and come to terms with what happened nearly 5 years ago.

Plus the amount of times on here that DV is referred to and incited on almost every post when a someone complains about their DP/DH is almost ridiculous. The cries of, "he's not joking it's mental abuse, you don't joke about this or that, he's controlling you ltb!!" Yet it's ok to make inappropriate comments and disguise it as jest? To do that I doubt very much you have even come close to DV.

I've no doubt that someone will be on to say they've experienced DV to a high degree and can laugh about it because they are now strong etc etc if only to try and make genuine and still scared victims feel even more responsible and guilty.

Toadinthehole · 14/09/2017 07:24

CoteDAzur,

You're wrong

CoteDAzur · 14/09/2017 07:43

No, you are wrong. See Exhibit 1 on page 3.

CoteDAzur · 14/09/2017 07:49

I mean, your article in "Stuff" is obviously more informative and definitive than the actual data I linked to, but just humour me Hmm

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 14/09/2017 08:50

Sorry but I see this a lot and it's the biggest load of shit

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 14/09/2017 08:53

Just to clarify I mean the eliminated part

sososocross · 14/09/2017 09:18

It looks like it's been taken down.

DaisyBelle70 · 14/09/2017 09:58

It's been taken down because it libels me and the author threatens to complain to the police about the remarks he alleges I've made, because he doesn't understand how people quote text on MN. I asked the site to remove it last night and apparently they did.

The irony is that the post of mine that is misquoted as the basis for the defamatory accusations was in fact along exactly the same lines as the article. i.e. I commented upon the amount of violence being suggested in that thread.

Other MN users were perfectly able to understand my post because they responded with various forms of dismissal along the lines of "it's only a joke", "you don't understand conversation", "you must be a man", etc. Mr University Lecturer / journalist was apparently not well-blessed enough with comprehension skills to be able to tell who was on his side and who wasn't.

It may of course be put back up once they've corrected it - the basic premise is not completely invalid even if I do think as a piece of journalism it scrapes pretty close to the bottom of the barrel.

CoteDAzur · 14/09/2017 20:23

Checking back to see if Toad has managed a reply.

Not surprised that he hasn't.

Toad - This is what happens to MRAs on MN.

thecatfromjapan · 14/09/2017 20:50

Has anyone else googled the lovely writer of the original article, by the way?

The fragrant Niall has form for likening anti-homophobia activists to the gestapo. I think he's an attention-seeker.

Alarmingly, he's a lecturer on mental health and midwifery. Which is not a little creepy, since it seems he has views on what is good and right in terms of women's behaviour/thinking/speech and a job where, effectively, he's lecturing a largely female workforce on what to do. Nice.

SonicBoomBoom · 14/09/2017 22:31

He's a lecturer in midwifery. That is not sitting very comfortably with me.

SonicBoomBoom · 14/09/2017 22:35

DV card

I didn't have that happen as you described. That poor woman and her children.

However I was repeatedly kicked in my back while he was wearing steel toe cap boots.
Punched in the head, dragged by my hair, punched all over and a full on direct punch from a 17 stone man to my mouth.

I don't think I am playing the dv card tbh.
