to think it wouldn't kill Strictly make an effort to have same sex couples?

I know there a big row about the comedienne who 'chose' a male partner but Strictly really could make an effort - maybe something along the lines of - " If you do have a same sex partner we'll make sure that you aren't some novelty act, we have access to some of the best choreographers & musical theatre people and creative people and it'll be awesome. Not just a version of the 'straight' routines.''
I've seen boys dance with boys and girls dance with girls and it really shouldn't be a big deal...

Seriously? No

BuckinhamL · 13/09/2017 16:06

Men flirting and dancing

RhiannonOHara · 13/09/2017 16:21

Boys in dresses.

You what?

slug · 13/09/2017 16:31

It's funny isn't it that all the fuss is about Susan Calman. Why is not attention paid to the equally gay and equally out Reverend Richard Cole. A man who is open about his days pole dancing in gay clubs no less.

Two women = titillating. Two men = icky.

vlooby · 13/09/2017 16:41

I feel sorry for Susan. She's obviously having the time of her life looking at her twitter feed and this ' controversy ' might put a dampener on it.

3EyedRaven · 13/09/2017 16:51

myfeetarealwayscold

LorLorr2 - course she does.

Because let's not believe her, after all you know her feelings better than she does.
Confused

CaveMum · 13/09/2017 16:53

Worth taking note of this.

BakedBeans47 · 13/09/2017 16:54

No need for same sex couples. As others have said it's dancing not shagging there's no need for people to dance with someone who "matches" their own sexual orientation.

And as has also been said how very depressing that it has only become an issue now there is a gay female contestant I don't recall the same fuss concerning any of the gay male contestants.

GherkinSnatch · 13/09/2017 16:57

I know. I don't recall a similar fuss when Judge Rinder danced with Oksana last year.

But here Craig Revel Horwood saying it could happen next year: www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/craig-revel-horwood-strictly-come-dancing-same-sex-couples-susan-calman-reverend-richard-coles-a7940391.html

maddiemookins16mum · 13/09/2017 17:00

It's madness. I can just imagine two men (or two women) dancing the Tango or Paso. It won't work.
Susan Calman (I think that's her name), is quite adamant she wanted a male partner.

Walkingtowork · 13/09/2017 17:10

Of course it should be up to her. On another occasion if someone was up for it, this would be lovely to see.

randomer · 13/09/2017 17:12

Yes boys in dresses silly. My son wore one at playgroup. Rest of his life in trousers. No harm done

MrsWhirly · 13/09/2017 17:15

It's dancing, not dating.

RhiannonOHara · 13/09/2017 17:16

I'm not getting your point, randomer. Apart from not knowing whether you're pro- or anti-boys in dresses, has anyone said that men on Strictly dancing with other men would have to wear a dress? Or am I totally missing what you're trying to say? Confused

AlexanderHamilton · 13/09/2017 17:24

Better not go to watch Kinky Boots or Priscilla then randomer.

myfeetarealwayscold · 13/09/2017 17:26

It's not about SC for me, it's about all of the LGBT dancers, how many more have to dance with opposite sex partners before we can have a same sex pairing because people think it's 'weird' to show 2 men or 2 women dancing.

GerdaLovesLili · 13/09/2017 17:51

addiemookins16mum Yes heavens! Who could possibly imagine that. (Clue, even the 1920s could cope with two women tangoing)

cudeatahorse · 13/09/2017 17:55

but the moves in ballroom require a 'straight' couple. They need to do lifts etc.

I'm glad you've mentioned that.
I thought the lifts were an important part of the competition, which is why I don't understand why some very overweight females enter it.
Their partners won't be able to lift them so they will be limited with the number of routines they can do.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/09/2017 18:00

Fair point Gerda, but my point is.....it's fine/ok for gay people to dance with the other gender/sex etc, especially when they've said they'd prefer it. It's part of the whole experience.

myfeetarealwayscold · 13/09/2017 18:02

As for the 'lifts' women can lift women and men can lift men and think of the creative routines that will come out of a twist in the 'traditional' . As someone said the heavier women aren't easy for some of the men to lift anyway. Isn't that what the whole show's about anyway?? Making it exciting and modern ?

Timefortea99 · 13/09/2017 18:07

The BBC has a habit of destroying its most successful programmes, like a televisual Munchasen syndrome, so no doubt at some point the BBC will introduce same sex dance partnerships, people will turn off in droves, and then the series will die.

The participants can't choose what partners they get now, why should they in the future? Why does everything have to be an agenda? Gay men and women are very involved in the programme already. Let us all (whatever your sexual preference) just enjoy a spangly, glittery Saturday night show without somebody trying to politicise it.

I used to live next door to lesbian whose partner worked at BBC in production. This was about 7 years ago. She said that she would not rest until same sex partners could dance on SCD. (Her exact words.) Out of all the goals and aspirations in life, this one seemed a bit lame, but she is close to getting her wish.

myfeetarealwayscold · 13/09/2017 18:09

Time for tea - what is it about a same sex couple dancing together that you think is so threatening that it would destroy a whole programme?

Timefortea99 · 13/09/2017 18:19

It is not threatening - just a reminder that the BBC has to politicise everything which detracts from what it is meant to be - a lighthearted spangly programme which already has full participation of gay and straight people.

3EyedRaven · 13/09/2017 18:22

What do you mean 'how many more have to dance'?
Are they going to forget they're LGBT unless they dance with someone of their sex? I don't understand why their dancing partner must match the sex of that which they're sexually attracted to?

myfeetarealwayscold · 13/09/2017 18:28

I strongly disagree that it has the FULL participation of LGBT people - not even close.
And the BBC is a publicly funded body that is supposed to reflect inclusiveness in its remit. And this watered down version is not it and IMHO is a direct result of the ridiculous attitudes to two women dancing together or two men dancing together.
