WIBU to wear my Doc Martens to work?

Just that really! I work as a Teaching Assistant in the art department of a secondary school. Staff dress code states no trainers, not flip flops but otherwise is pretty open. My DMs are a sort of navy & purple but quite dark. (They were once navy, have had layers of hot pink shoe polish over the top and are gradually getting more purple).

The weather is miserable here, my usual smart winter boots are in desperate need of re-waterproofing and I don't want to get them wet before I get a chance to do it, otherwise I'll never get around to it like last year

I tend to be pretty relaxed with the dress code. I usually wear black skinny jeans, a jersey tunic & a cardi. Or some sort of smartish dress & tights (or leggings if I'm wearing boots). I'm gifted lumbered with an ample bosom so I always make sure I don't wear anything low cut.

WIBU to wear my DMs for a bit? They're so comfy, lots of 6th form students wear them. Surely a leather lace-up boot is more appropriate than the heels / dolly shoes worn by some of my colleagues?

You can't see they're Boots if your trousers are covering them, they just look like sensible lace ups which men wear all the time.

And there are plenty of things the teachers can wear when children can't (obviously) Confused

Loads of 6th form wear them. Obviously uniformed students can't wear them as they are boots. But they'd be allowed to wear DM shoes. Provided they were black. I don't own a single pair of shoes that would fit the student dress code...

I wore them outside leggings and a dress today, my feet were very happy! I only wear leggings because they are so much comfier and more practical than tights. We're not allowed to, but I figure if they're tucked into boots there's really not that much difference.

Happy happy DM feet this eve Grin

Mummy Those shoes are beautiful ! I'm gobsmacked you don't like them Grin.

You're an art teacher - you're allowed to be more arty than the average teacher Grin

Northernparent68 · 14/09/2017 23:33

Laurie and sparkle I really disagree, I'm sick of teachers floating around wearing what they like and then having the cheek to enforce uniform codes for children. If it's not acceptable for students it is not enforceable for teachers.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/09/2017 23:36

Ah, that's because you don't know that teachers don't introduce, mandate, design or sell school uniform - it's the governors or the Lea you want for that Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 14/09/2017 23:39

The teachers also don't have a choice about enforcing school uniform - again it's the governors (occasionally the principal) or the LEA you want for that.

Trust me, my dh doesn't give a shiny shit that your kid has a Star Wars bag instead of the regulation navy but he works for the school and all uniform codes are enforced as the kids signed contracts with their parents saying they would comply.

I'm against school uniform, still think that what adult teachers wear is not related.

Northern, pupils and staff have separate clothing codes in schools. They're not the same because the two bodies of people are not equal. It's not hard to understand, though some parents seem to be determined to make it so.

MummySparkle · 15/09/2017 22:00

Northern I've never given a uniform sanction. I've told students they shouldn't be wearing things and advised them to remove / hide / avoid some of the scary asshole teachers, but never told anyone off. As far as I'm concerned if the kids are in the art department & willing to learn then I don't give two hoots what they're wearing. I do agree with school uniform, but many schools take it too far.
