WIBU to wear my Doc Martens to work?

MummySparkle · 12/09/2017 23:57

Just that really! I work as a Teaching Assistant in the art department of a secondary school. Staff dress code states no trainers, not flip flops but otherwise is pretty open. My DMs are a sort of navy & purple but quite dark. (They were once navy, have had layers of hot pink shoe polish over the top and are gradually getting more purple).

The weather is miserable here, my usual smart winter boots are in desperate need of re-waterproofing and I don't want to get them wet before I get a chance to do it, otherwise I'll never get around to it like last year

I tend to be pretty relaxed with the dress code. I usually wear black skinny jeans, a jersey tunic & a cardi. Or some sort of smartish dress & tights (or leggings if I'm wearing boots). I'm gifted lumbered with an ample bosom so I always make sure I don't wear anything low cut.

WIBU to wear my DMs for a bit? They're so comfy, lots of 6th form students wear them. Surely a leather lace-up boot is more appropriate than the heels / dolly shoes worn by some of my colleagues?

A sensible choice of satety-conscious footwear in a practical work environment, I would say.

AJPTaylor · 13/09/2017 08:00

I work in an office and wear doc marten shoes and boots.
Bizarrely this lead to rumours i was gay.
Despite being married to a bloke and having 3 children
Who knew? 40 something woman with short hair and docs equals gay😂😂😂😂😂

MummySparkle · 13/09/2017 18:48

Thanks for all of your thoughts everyone! I wore my DMs with my black jeans down over them. I walked past the head today and smiled. He didn't bat an eye (not sure he'd know a pair of docs if they hit him in the face). So, DMs are in Grin

DMs are the greatest. Every day for me. (Except in summer cos I love a chunky sandal.)

I'm trying to suss out whether I can wear jeans to work.

3EyedRaven · 13/09/2017 18:52

I'm trying to suss out whether I can wear DMs to work in my office, with a dress and tights, now it's getting colder.
I can wear normal ankle boots, but DMs are a bit different to that, aren't they?

Undercoverbanana · 13/09/2017 18:56

Supportive, warm, dry, enclosed, classic safety footwear for the workplace. Safe on stairs, icy pavements, wet floors, climbing ladders, matches everything ..... Surely there is nothing to object to?

PollyFlint · 13/09/2017 18:59

They're just a flat leather boot; it's no big deal. Can't see why it wouldn't be fine.

Ronnyhotdog · 13/09/2017 19:00

Go for it, I work in a drs surgery and wear my dm's most of the time, never been told they weren't smart enough. A lovely old man told me he loved my boots but I should have got them in green or red.

SpiritedLondon · 13/09/2017 19:02

I wore my DM shoes with a knee length fitted jersey dress in hot pink and opaque tights and got away with it.( although mine are quite new still) I work in the public sector. I would have thought that arts / teaching would be pretty liberal tbh.

MummySparkle · 14/09/2017 14:21

2 days of DMs on the trot with no comments. It felt good wearing them today. You're right, I do a lot of climbing up on desks, walking all over the place, carrying boxes, washing up, using white spirit. I need sensible, flat, enclosed shoes. My role basically dictates that I need to wear DMs Grin

Yeah, I worked in the public sector for years and now for a fairly old-school regulatory organisation and I've always see a few DMs around the office.

DMs don't fit me that well but in my previous job I regularly wore very chunky 'flatform' style lace-up shoes and today I'm sporting a leopard print brogue.

DR Martens have more "teacher-y" shoes though. Like these .....

I just want to say I love your docs...they look so comfy. I'm trying to break in a pair I got two weeks ago - can't wait until they're like yours! Mine are Arcadia...cherry with black polish on them...gorgeous

shhhfastasleep · 14/09/2017 14:46

Just to warn you: DMs are hopeless in snow and ice. I used to live in a very snowy/icy city and you could always spot rookie visitors in DMs. Usually going a over t.

May not be relevant to your circs but might be.

FiftyShadesOfDuckEggBlue · 14/09/2017 14:50

I wear DMs at work all the time. They are my smart shoes!

MummySparkle · 14/09/2017 14:58

EUgh! Notgivingin I wouldn't be seen dead in those!

Fastasleep, I learned that the had way in Jan 2010 when we had that massive snow fall. These boots were brand new and I lived in London at the time at the top of a big hill. The bus stop was at the bottom of the hill...

Add to that the pain of non broken in DMs... never again!

I do. Mine are fluorescent lime green. I'm a chartered accountant. Nobody seems to care Grin

My DMs are amazing in the snow. Only footwear that stops me going A over T Blush

TheDrsDocMartens · 14/09/2017 15:59

I wear DMs to work in a school that's pretty strict on staff clothes. Mine are black and I wear trousers over them though

Littlegreyauditor · 14/09/2017 16:01

I have knee high Docs which lace up the front and am trying to convince myself I can wear them in winter, with a dress and chunky tights. I have a patient-facing job though and am a bit worried because of that.
I'm very jealous, OP. Your feet must be so happy. Envy

Northernparent68 · 14/09/2017 16:45

Are the children allowed to wear them ? If not you should nt either
