Posting here for traffic.

Only pair of glasses I have fell off my face this evening and have snapped down the middle on the bridge. I'm almost blind without them, definitely can't work as cant see well enough to read without them. Currently have a bodged sellotape job but don't think it's going to last long. Also have a family wedding Saturday so desperately need glasses for then.

If I take my glasses in will they have frames in the shop and switch my lenses into one of them, if I pay for the frames do you think? This is absolutely desperate, this was my spare pair so I'm completely lost if not, won't be able to work and might not be able to go the wedding. Anyone got any positive stories from opticians / recommendations of where to try that may help?!

Forgot to add, wedding is Saturday at other end of country so will be spending the day travelling Friday so this needs to be sorted tomorrow or Thursday at latest. I need a miracle don't I? Sad

Don't vision express still make glasses in store while you wait?

maggiso · 12/09/2017 23:08

If your glasses are fairly new, your optician might have an identical frame in stock- otherwise it's just luck if there is a suitable frame that will fit the lenses. It also depends on the type of lenses you have - multi vocals are unlikely to be successfully transferred to anything other than an identical frame.
You need to go in to your optician tomorrow, ( as time is so limited)and see what if anything can be done. An opticians with their own workshop might be better equipped to help you out.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 12/09/2017 23:10

It depends on the Vision Express. The ones that are fully company owned have not got labs anymore but some franchises do.

Specsavers are all franchises and some have onsite labs.

However

If you can get the identical frames then swapping over the lenses can be done without a lab.
If you can't get the exact same frames then getting the lenses cut down is virtually impossible. It's not just a case of making them fit, the right bit of the lens has to be in front of your eye.

Thanks for the link, I have had a look but my prescription is quite strong so they can't make glasses for me. They're not multi focal so fingers crossed that will go in my favour. I might try vision express thanks for the tip!

www.bespokeeyewear.co.uk/ this place is in harrogate? i'm not sure of geography up there!

GreatFuckability · 12/09/2017 23:12

www.yelp.co.uk/search?find_desc=Same+Day+Glasses&find_loc=Halifax%2C+West+Yorkshire yelp gives these as same day, might be worth giving them a ring.

StumpyScot92 · 12/09/2017 23:19

I am basically blind without my glasses and had to get an emergency pair a while ago, soonest I could get was 48 hours but I got contact lenses in the meantime would that be an option for you?

YellowLily · 12/09/2017 23:20

Thank you, Harrogate isn't far from us, about half an hour drive, will give them a call in the morning. My concern is that my prescription is pretty strong so I don't know if they're going to be able to do it. SadSadSad I've needed new glasses for a while and am kicking myself I haven't sorted them before now!

YellowLily · 12/09/2017 23:22

Were they able to make up the contact lenses immediately for you? I have never ever tried them but I did say to DP I thought they could be made pretty instantly and will just have to suffer (if there's discomfort) until I can get glasses sorted! Sad

Contact lenses will be in stock. However you won't really be able to get used to them straight away.

Winteriscomingneedmorewood · 13/09/2017 18:41

If your dress is blue or beige you could use matching plasters to fix them!

Sorry, broken specs would be my worst mishap ever too.

stillvicarinatutu · 13/09/2017 18:43

i used to be a dispensing optician.

if you choose a smaller frame than you have our lenses could be cut down into a new frame.

stillvicarinatutu · 13/09/2017 18:45

my ex boss lives harragate. he is fab and has a very good lab tech who im sure could sort you out.

ill pm you.

EggysMom · 13/09/2017 18:48

No practical ideas, just some sensible advice for the future from someone who is also incredibly shortsighted (8.5). Always get two pairs, always get your eyes tested every two years max, and always take the opportunity for new specs if your prescription has changed. That way you don't only have the spare pair, but you'll have a cupboard full of older pairs that you can wear in an emergency such as this!

AllToadsLeadToHome · 13/09/2017 18:49

Surgical tape will adhere better than sellotape, in case you still need to stick them together, not the elastoplast type, the one that looks like a papery version of selllotape.

If all else fails use the tape and cover it with a coloured tape to match the colour of your frames.

I have had to stick my glasses a few times as I tend to not see where they are and stand or sit on them and have tried various repairs.

ZaphodBeeblerox · 13/09/2017 18:55

You can get contacts easily - ask your optician for a sample set (you should get 3 pairs) of daily disposables and try them the day before and on the day of the wedding.

Also you can try surgical tape on your glasses and then cover the bridge and a bit of the sides with some similar-to-frame coloured washi tape. If you are almost blind without glasses like me you will need DH to do this artistically but can be a way to get away with it at the wedding.

I've worn contacts since I was 6 but they really do take some getting used to so don't recommend it unless it's dire.

Rightsaidmabel · 13/09/2017 19:12

Superglue !

underneaththeash · 13/09/2017 19:21

Unless you don't drink anything, I really wouldn't think about getting contacts now, not three days from a big event where you'll have to wear them all day.

You'll only be able to have the lenses put into the same frame, unless you go for one that's substantially smaller than your own. So....plan a should be:
Call the opticians you bought them from and see if they have the same frame in stock if not...
Call vision express, they have a huge stock of lenses, they may not have your exact prescription, but the optometrist will be able to authorise something that isn't exact, but pretty good....
Otherwise I would spend a couple of hours ringing around other local practices (especially ones who are able to make glasses on the premises = on-site glazing) and see if they have anything similar to your prescription.

Cadsuane · 13/09/2017 19:53

I once did this to my glasses in Disneyland Paris. It was 11pm so I asked the hotel receptionist if she knew where I could get some tape the next day or where the nearest opticians where.
She insisted on me waiting for one of their handymen to come and see me then.
He used superglue. He put layer on each side of the break , let that dry, then another few layers I think and then glued the two halves together. Lots of time and patience but what a fantastic fix, you had to feel for the repair.

horriblehistorieswench · 13/09/2017 20:13

My daughter snapped her glasses in half at the bridge when playing basketball. The optician wouldn't swap her lenses as she was overdue her eye test. Even with me begging "she has no spare pleeeeease do something". That was Boots Opticians so maybe give them a swerve OP. It was a clean break & I managed to superglue them - held them for ages to make sure join was "set" and she wore them for about the fortnight it took for eye test appointment and new pair to be made.
