To ask my 2yo to walk 4-5 miles a day?

She's 3 end of November. School run 1mile times 4 plus extra bits during the day. Eg another 0.2 to her nursery x2. Shopping etc. Not to mention running around at home, park, soft play etc. She does it fine but is slowing down on some legs and is definitely more tired for it. Should I use buggy for one leg or is she too old?

Scooter / balance bike?

scaredofthecity · 12/09/2017 16:15

sounds like a lot to me

ThatsWotSheSaid · 12/09/2017 16:16

She's not too old for a buggy but if she's happy to do it and you don't mind slowing down then why? It's great exercise and you can talk and look at snails etc.

DO3271 · 12/09/2017 16:16

I think thats a lot for her age.

noeffingidea · 12/09/2017 16:16

My children all used a buggy until they were 4, when they needed it. 4-5 miles is a lot of walking, in fact it's more than a lot of adults manage.

MissRainbowBrite · 12/09/2017 16:18

Seems quite far for little legs. Would recommend a mini micro scooter if she can be trusted to stay close and not go near the road. Far less effort is required to push a scooter than walk.
DD at that age could scoot much further than she could walk but it all depends on your route.

KidLorneRoll · 12/09/2017 16:18

Surely if nothing else that would take forever, and that is quite a lot of walking for a 3 year old. I'd be using the buggy, or perhaps a bike with bike seat or something?

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/09/2017 16:19

It VERY much depends on the child. DD didn't have a buggy after 18 months and she could so 5k all at once at 2yo. But she was a total anomaly and none of her friends could have managed that cheerfully at that age.

RedSkyAtNight · 12/09/2017 16:19

I think that's fine as it's all in little bits (4-5 miles in one go would probably be too much!). At her age she will simply get used to walking that distance if you don't offer an alternative (my DS was walking similar at same sort of age as I also had a baby and couldn't manage them both in a double buggy).

megletthesecond · 12/09/2017 16:20

Use a buggy. Mine were in it until 4.6.

BastardGoDarkly · 12/09/2017 16:21

Naaawww, does she mind? Moan? I'd bike with her on the back personally.

GreatBigPolarBear · 12/09/2017 16:22

I think that's quite a lot. But if she's not complaining and you're happy to spend the time then no problem.
Personally I'd use a buggy for some of the school runs over the week.

lizzieoak · 12/09/2017 16:30

Plus once it's pitching down it's not going to be viable. Nothing wrong with a bit of exercise but she's also nowhere near too old for a buggy.

nicknamehelp · 12/09/2017 16:31

What about a trike with a pole so you can push her.

mogulfield · 12/09/2017 16:32

We use the balance bike for those distances.

Butterymuffin · 12/09/2017 16:34

It's a lot for her age to do every day and especially in winter. So I'd switch it up and take the buggy sometimes.

NewPapaGuinea · 12/09/2017 16:35

Bike with seat?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/09/2017 16:36

Use a buggy.

Sisinisawa · 12/09/2017 16:39

Carry a sling and chuck her on your back when she gets tired.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 12/09/2017 16:39

It's ok in the summer maybe, but when it's pouring with rain/snow/hail/windy you don't want to spend an hour on the school run

Kitsandkids · 12/09/2017 16:41

I have a 0.8 mile walk with a baby 4 times a day for my elder children's school run. She'll have just turned 3 when the now 8 year old finishes and I just assumed we'd be using a buggy until then. That way, she can walk if she wants but can use the buggy if tired. I don't think 3 is too old for a buggy for long walks.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/09/2017 16:41

I couldn't carry a 3 year old on my back!

Why the aversion to the perfect solution of a buggy?

Montsti · 12/09/2017 16:41

I do about the same with my almost 3 year old but I always take the buggy with me just in case...but I also use it for storage for my bag/my older 2s schoolbags and I'm 37 weeks pregnant!

I would take a buggy as it takes the pressure off...

redemptionsongs · 12/09/2017 16:42

sounds too far to me. my 7 year old could walk that far once in a week.

herecomesthsun · 12/09/2017 16:43

They weren't walking that far, but my husband used to take my daughter on her micro scooter and had a pull-along cord so he could help her go. If it is safe to scoot that would be good to use some of the time.

Building up stamina is great if she is happy with it. We have a friend who regularly will go on 4 or 5 mile runs with her daughter on her bike- but this was a little older, reception age.
