Aibu to gently remind people that the only things that should go down the toilet (and sink) are bodily fluids and tissue paper?

It seems to come up quite frequently that people don't understand you shouldn't flush other things down there.

Even toilet roll isn't always flushable. Charmin is a toilet blocker. (Or is it Cushelle now? Maybe it used to be Cushelle?)

I didn't know about the not flushing tampons thing until joining mn. I'm sure tampax used to say they were flushable so I blame them for my misinformation.

Some cat litters are flushable. The one we have is, it basically dissolves when submerged in water like toilet paper does.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 12/09/2017 17:43

We're on a septic tank. When you have to deal with blockages and fuck ups yourself, you very quickly learn what not to stick down the shitter.

There is a special place in hell for anyone who flushes fucking wet wipes down the loo. I'm a landlord of several properties on private septic tanks and it's the bane of my life.

Yes Tampax did used to say they were flushable. I distinctly remember the "Tampax lady" at school telling us so. It's only recently that I've realised they can't be flushed. Feel bad for all those years I was flushing them :(. Switched to a menstrual cup now anyway which is so much better.

AlmostAJill.

I am sorry about your OCD.

But you know what? You have just given me a great idea about using a scrap of gel on the toilet paper to give a good clean.

I know it is not for you, but it would work for me. So far no worries down there.

I'll give it a try.

I think you could probably make your own alcohol free and decant it into a little bottle. Look at the ingredients in the US one and maybe try and replicate it?

Do you know the name of this product?

We should have bidets as standard. I mean how do hairy guys get clean with just dry toilet paper?! Must be like getting peanut butter out of a shagpile rug.

I'd love one for during my period too. I have to rinse off with the shower a few times a day during my periods. A bidet would be so much better.

Literally crying 😂

I know someone who pours oil down the drain. When I told her that it causes the fatburgs, she was really dismissive and snobby. According to her, only animal fat causes blockages because it solidifies, and she only ever uses olive oil, so it’s fine to pour away. She could not get her head around the fact that all oil solidifies when it gets cold enough (i.e. in the sewers). I suggested she put a bottle of olive oil in the fridge to see what happened, but I'm not sure she ever did.

@AlmostaJillSandwich and @ProffessorCat

I make my own 'wet wipe' spray and put small spray bottles near the loo. I then spray it onto regular toilet paper and it works great.

I use a variation on an anti-fungal recipe I found on the internet (search for Homemade Cloth Baby Wipes and Wipe Solutions) but basically it's distilled water and small amount of liquid soap (I've always used Dr Bronners as it's pretty natural). I also add aloe vera and calendula oil (to make it soothing and more wipeable!) and couple of drops of tea-tree oil (I'm prone to thrush and I think it helps).

I usually make about a litre at a time and it lasts 6-12 months. It's important to use distilled water as then it doesn't go brackish/mouldy

It works so well and I even decant into a small spray bottle for my handbag/travel.

I bought small spray bottles from Superdrug and everything else from Amazon.
