Aibu to gently remind people that the only things that should go down the toilet (and sink) are bodily fluids and tissue paper?

It seems to come up quite frequently that people don't understand you shouldn't flush other things down there.

Samsara beat me to it!

My brother worked for a water company for a while in waste water and was the lucky bugger who got to scrape out the filters when they were clogged with sanpro condoms, and wet wipes. Unsurprisingly he's changed jobs. And fwiw those "flushable wipes" don't disintegrate.

While we're on the subject, do people think the u bends have got smaller or the poo's bigger. How the heck people get nappies down I don't know, poo and paper together in this house is a problem.

rebelnotaslave · 12/09/2017 16:27

Do you eat off your anus Cat ?

This made me laugh so hard I almost bust my stitches!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 12/09/2017 16:44

I lived in Whitechapel for many years and many residents and businesses were very gung ho about flushing stuff. The amount of oil poured down sinks is horrifying. I can well believe the 250m fat Berg lurking under the pavements.
I was once a Markets Inspector on Whitechapel Road and I've poked sticks down many an oil-clogged and backed up drain. The main culprits were the Fried Chicken shops and the restaurants.

ProfessorCat · 12/09/2017 16:52

Out of curiosity, where do the experts stand on cat litter? I have a friend who has a litter tray in her bathroom and she scoops the clumps straight into her toilet. It seems wrong to me! She uses the clumping litter so it's like flushing a load of gravel as well as cat poo.

NotMeNoNo · 12/09/2017 16:57

There are no words for trying to flush cat litter. Also it's mostly clay so practically inert in landfill.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 12/09/2017 17:02

My mum flushes wet wipes, when I found out I told her I gave her a bit of lecture and it ended up turning into a full blown argument.

I just don't understand why she does it.

rebelnotaslave · 12/09/2017 17:04

We use recycled paper cat litter. But we bin, we never flush.

BahHumbygge · 12/09/2017 17:13

Never flush cat litter or poo down the loo, cat faeces contain pathogens like toxoplasmosis that get into waterways and rivers. It can't be fully treated out. It's harmful both to wildlife and people whose drinking water source is down river from the treated sewage outflow pipe.

I was looking forward to a nice dinner, until I clicked this thread!

Anyway a couple of questions...

If moist toilet tissue should not be flushed WHY does it say it's ok to do so on the packet then?

If you have a bidet or an arse shower hose, what do you dry your nether regions with after the cleanout?

I won't be hungry for an age after all this..

ProfessorCat · 12/09/2017 17:16

An arse shower Grin

I've tried telling her it's not right to flush cat litter. She won't have it.

AvenuesAndAlleyways · 12/09/2017 17:20

In advertising terms, the use of the word flushable means it can physically be flushed down, not that it should be and that sewers can cope with them. I read about a water company trying to change the rules and I hope they win.

I have IBS and use wet wipes when I need to (not branded, just supermarket own brand baby wipes) but they go in the bin.

BahHumbygge · 12/09/2017 17:23

Dora... I think the packaging says "flushable" because technically it is flushable... in the sense that it can round your U-bend. The fact that it completely buggers up the pipes and sewers after that the wipes manufacturers seem to care little about.

Drying your nether bits, you could use a facecloth (maybe colour code them if you don't fancy your face and arse sharing a cloth! Smile ). Put them in the hot wash when you do your towels. Or an old tee shirt cut up, zigzag or overlock the edges, or just a small wodge of dry loo paper.

Doramaybe · 12/09/2017 17:24

Avenues,

but we all know that baby wipes are non flushable, says so on the pack. So we don't do it.

However, moist wipes for yer bum says the opposite. Some confusion or something there really isn't there?

Anyway, any answer to my question about the bidet/arse shower thing. Do you just stand up and pull up your knickers or what?

I hope you realise I am being lighthearted here, even though my appetite for dinner is gone now.

Jux · 12/09/2017 17:25

I knew a musician whose other job was for Dyno-Rod. He told tales of tampons which had been flushed as growing to the size of sheep! (Exaggeration for effect, I know, but made a very funny story.) I never put anything in there but loo paper thereafter - 25+ years ago now.

Our drain kept blocking, and we had to have Dyno-Rod out almost annually. The problem was eventually found to be a combination of an old Victorian rat-trap and a crack in the main sewage pipe; diagnosed by our water company putting a camera down, took years to find it. Luckily, they fixed it about a year before the law changed or we'd have had to pay for the investigation and repairs.

Doramaybe · 12/09/2017 17:26

Bah....

Sorry my dear, there is no way my pristine bathroom would be covered in bits of facecloths, or arsecloths or bits of tee shirts either for all to see that these are what Dora uses do clean her bits.

I'll take a chance on one square of moist toilet paper in a dire emergency, not going to go TMI here either.

BahHumbygge · 12/09/2017 17:28

If you're of an eco-warrior disposition, google "family wipes". If you're of an "ick" persuasion, steer clear Grin

FlameCrestedTanager · 12/09/2017 17:30

We have a bidet attachment next to our loo. I just use my bath towel to dry off, I assume DH does the same though I've never actually asked him. I don't use it every time I go to the loo, or even every day, but it's brilliant for freshening up during the day when I have my period or for a thorough rinse after sex. I suffer terribly from UTIs and used to have to clamber into the bath to use the shower afterwards every single time I had sex (it does make a big difference). You can probably imagine how fed up I was with that and it's the main reason we had the bidet attachment put in when we had the new bathroom fitted, I wouldn't fit a new bathroom without one now.

storynanny · 12/09/2017 17:30

Jux, we do not have to pay for the work or the next part when the roots are removed as we share drains. According to Southern Water if you share waste water drains there is no cost for unblocking etc. Ie our three waste drains feed into the big main one.

Doramaybe · 12/09/2017 17:32

Flame,

I suppose if you arse/elsewhere wash down there with the bidet it's ok to use the bath towel.

But it makes me shudder sorry. Bath towels are for after a bath/proper shower.

I know, I know. Just me.

Still have no appetite for dinner, thank you all.

FlameCrestedTanager · 12/09/2017 17:36

Dora - I don't really see the difference. No-one should be using soap inside delicate parts so you're just as clean after using a handheld bidet/shower as you after a shower or bath.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 12/09/2017 17:37

I wish they sold the bum friendly sanitiser gel over here that they have in the states. I have really bad ibs/suspected colitis, and OCD, i have to use moist wipes every time i go to the loo or it would take up to 2 full rolls of regular paper to get clean. Because of said OCD putting the used wipes in a bin is not an option, no way could a bag of shitty wipes get carried through my house without feeling like everything along the route was being contaminated.

The last week or so i've become really paranoid about the loo backing up as i would not cope with an over flow, and i can't use any loo other than the one in my house, also thanks to OCD.
I don't want to use the regular sanitiser gel as its got alcohol in it, will be very drying and i get a lot of cuts which will sting like hell, plus i dont want to cause UTI's or anything. However, they don't seem to sell the specific hygiene gel over here, that you just put a squirt on regular loo roll and its thick enough to not soak in like water and just disintegrate the paper, but gives a clean like a moist wipe.
