Opinions on 'fundraising'

Nomoresunshine · 11/09/2017 18:39

I have opted out of a particular fund raiser as it isn't for charity but for a dc out of school activity type thing. . Trying to be vague in case of outing. .
Seems I am the only dp who this isn't sitting right with. .
Just want opinions on fund raising ethics if you would be so kind.
I have explained it to dd and she agrees with me (own mind very most definitely!!).

If this involves bagging stuff in supermarkets definitely YANBU. Those baggers can piss right off.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/09/2017 18:44

It depends what it is. I've gone to a quiz night organised by a boy we know wanting funding towards a trip. But he put a lot of effort into its organisation, and I love quizzes, and I wanted to spend an evening with friends.

I don't like the supermarket naggers either.

Ragwort · 11/09/2017 18:45

It's difficult without knowing a few more details - do you mean something like a bag pack for a ski trip that the school is organising?

If your child is benefiting from the activity, but not prepared to help 'fund raise' then it would be appropriate to make a donation yourself - or for your child to do so? I agree that some activities that schools raise funds for aren't particularly 'charity focused' but sometimes there is a benefit in young people getting together and organising something to raise money - but they need to be perfectly clear about what they are raising funds for.

I work for a charity and there are strict guidelines for charity fund raising and schools should be seen to be following them.

My pet hate is 'non school uniform days' where children send a £1 in but the total raised is never published - I have finally given up complaining to my DS's school about this, I never get a satisfactory answer.

Twinkleheth · 11/09/2017 18:45

I think if all the money raised is going to the cause that is stated, then it's ethical. And then it's up to the individual whether they want to support that cause.

Gorgosparta · 11/09/2017 18:46

Depends on what it is and what its for

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 11/09/2017 18:48

I won't give to any 'fundraiser' activities now - registered charities only. I have absolutely zero confidence in non-auditable monies being managed properly.

It's to pay £599.00 for a limo to drive end of year dc around our town for an hour. . .
Getting texts pressuring me to get involved.

Is this car going to be able to take all of leavers, or is I just for a few?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/09/2017 18:51

So it's a leavers treat type of thing?

Nomoresunshine · 11/09/2017 18:51

Less than a dozen which is all. .
They have approached the school for permission to raise in school which I also don't agree with. .

OP posts:
Kit30 · 11/09/2017 18:52

Definitely not a charity fundraiser then..

Twinkleheth · 11/09/2017 18:53

Wow that's an expensive limo! How many children will it hold? I've hired limos for my children's special events and it was half the price for an hour and only held 8.

Twinkleheth · 11/09/2017 18:53

Is it one parent who has organised this?

Nomoresunshine · 11/09/2017 18:54

Will take all of them. .
Just feel personally that fund raising is for something worthy and my other dd had a great leaver's day for £30 this year!! Same school and dp funded!!

The ones that really get my goat are the "trek Kilimanjaro for xyz charity" looking at you mil where people need to raise £x but half goes towards their flights accommodation etc.

I've recently sponsored someone I used to work with to do a trek to Everest base camp for leukeamia research. She's paid for flights equipment and accommodation herself. And all sponsorship is going towards the charity.

Seniorcitizen1 · 11/09/2017 19:08

They'd get nowt from me

BoneyBackJefferson · 11/09/2017 19:13

I am a teacher and I wouldn't give to this either.

Nomoresunshine · 11/09/2017 19:14

Thanks. .
Just to finish off - there is the most adorable dc at the school who needs cash for an operation that would be life changing and the school haven't fund raised for him so I hope they do say no to this!
The dm had a fb page and I did donate to him.
Will grab my big girls pants and tell them I will be sticking to opting out. .

it's probably so all the kids get to go. it is likely unaffordable to at least one family so class earning the money for it themselves seems a good idea to me.

I would rather they didn't bother if my child but would help so everyone is included.

Floralnomad · 11/09/2017 19:17

Surely if it is 12 people they just chip in £50 each , job done I don't agree with fundraising for that kind of thing .

Nomoresunshine · 11/09/2017 19:20

That's only part of the plan though!! Activity +food venue on top of the limo ride!!
And a souvenir each.
Possible £30 after limo cost!!

OP posts:
Hilda40 · 11/09/2017 19:30

Less than a dozen which is all

FEWER!

Nomoresunshine · 11/09/2017 19:39

Less than a dozen which is all the leavers. .
11!!

OP posts:
Ragwort · 12/09/2017 07:32

Are the 'Leavers' organising the fund rasier themselves and then asking other children to buy cakes or similar?

If it is entirely above board and made clear that they are organising something to pay for a Limo - yes, I would think it is ridiculously expensive but if my child actively wanted to go in the Limo then I wouldn't stop them using their own pocket money to buy a cake for example. But I wouldn't donate £25 of my own money.

Ragwort · 12/09/2017 07:34

Why do you need to 'opt out' of the event, is your DD involved in the Limo trip? Does she want to go in the Limo? Confused

If she wants to go in the Limo then she needs to pay her fair share - either by paying it herself, asking you to or helping with the event?

If she isn't going in the Limo then surely it doesn't matter what happens?
