Like Myra for example? What does that make you think of? Shock

Ainu?

With Adolf you can interchange both names as it is always clear, Myra Hindley in reporting would of have the same interchanging whereas Ian Brady would have been reported using his full name or Brady. Barack Obama has two names instantly recognisable to him, where's JFK would rarely be referred to as just John.

LurkingHusband · 11/09/2017 13:38

Jack, surely ?

bogofeternalstench · 11/09/2017 13:39

I love Nell but I could never use it due to the elephant connotation.

coffeeslave · 11/09/2017 13:41

Milo, as in Yiannopoulos

elQuintoConyo · 11/09/2017 15:35

Lurking different sites offer different explanations, different version. Wikipedia is written by Joe and Joana Schmo!

I wouldn't name a daughter any of the Sex and the City names, although they are all nice and I like the way they use the full versions. Carrie is a bit Stephen King-esque. I wemt to school with a Miranda who had a fit brother called Rupert and a mother who couldn't pronounce her Rs. Rupert and Miranda will always be Oopert and Mwanda to me!

Felix doesn't make me think of a cat or cat food. Oliver reminds me of Jamie Oliver, bleurgh.

Not sure which post you are referring to ...

(p.s. is your username spelled correctly ?)

Clawdy · 11/09/2017 16:29

I'm from the generation where there were one or two girls called Myra at school. It wasn't considered to be a pretty name even then, and within a few years nobody would ever have chosen it, particularly in Manchester. It will take a long time for Hindley's notoriety to become forgotten.

elQuintoConyo · 11/09/2017 18:28

No it isn't spelt correctly as i cannot put ñ in my username: el quinto coño.

If you google Lillith lots of sites pop up, each with different meanings to the name. I didn't want to quote just Wikipedia as it isn't 100% true 100% of the time - hell, even i could change it Grin

troodiedoo · 11/09/2017 18:37

I have an Alice. Had the who the fuck is Alice song sung a handful of times, always a certain type of man aged over 40. Says more about them that they are willing to admit to being a Roy chubby brown fan, I look at them with pity.

I do like to sing Alice what's the matter by terrorvision when she cries. Nobody else remembers that one though!

Subtlecheese · 11/09/2017 18:51

I know both but am a pathetic 40 plusser . If female

Spangles1963 · 11/09/2017 18:55

It's strange isn't it how many people back away from the name Myra because of it's associations with Myra Hindley, yet the name Ian doesn't seem to provoke the same reaction?

troodiedoo · 11/09/2017 19:13

@Subtlecheese not saying the age bit is pathetic! Only that a certain generation remember the song. And a certain type of person start singing it. If someone told me their new baby was called Gordon, I wouldn't start singing he is a moron. Because rude.

SumAndSubstance · 11/09/2017 21:46

I remember it! Great track Grin

Liadain · 11/09/2017 21:50

Tbf though I think Myra is a bit more of an unusual name - ime, anyway. I know a good few Ian's, but no one called Myra.

Petalflowers · 11/09/2017 21:55

Nancy - I've seen this name a lot on Baby name threads recently, but it always reminds of Nancy has an abusive term for homosexuals.. Ie. He's a bit of a Nancy boy.

Jemima - also think automatically of Jemina puddleduck

Sabrina - loved this from the Charlie Angel days. Then Sabrina The Witch came along.

BoysofMelody · 11/09/2017 21:57

Myra because of it's associations with Myra Hindley, yet the name Ian doesn't seem to provoke the same reaction?

I guess because even then, there were far more Ians knocking around than Myras. I can think of lots of other Ians in the public eye: Botham, McKellen, Curtis etc. But can't think of any other Myras well known enough to dilute the association.

Merida83 · 11/09/2017 22:24

My favourite girls name has been vetoed by DH - he my DF and DBiL all ruin it every time i mention it with their chant.
Charlotte - "charlotte the harlot the cowpuncher whore"
apparently its from a song
still gutted DH won't ignore this and let me use it,
its a beautiful name that i've loved forever! :'-(

MrsJamesAspey · 12/09/2017 00:41

My son has a friend who's surname is Hindley and he has 3 older sisters, the name stands out to me every time it's mentioned. It probably does help that the mum has bleach blonde hair and looks a bit like Myra.

I've just realised that I know someone with the surname Brady and I've never connected it to Ian Brady.

My Dad ruined the name Theresa, by repeated Theresa Green every time he heard it

SuperBeagle · 12/09/2017 02:08

Petal Nancy reminds me of Nancy Spungen. Also not a great association. Grin

Littlecaf · 12/09/2017 09:04

Birdsgottafly - Are you my DP? Grin

My family & his wouldn't use Maggie either but I have southern more conservative friends who wouldn't see the problem & think she was marvellous.

Also I like the song Maggie May but still wouldn't use it. There was a character in Teachers (was it Teachers? I loved it) called Maggie who kicked ass.

LurkingHusband · 12/09/2017 09:42

If you google Lillith lots of sites pop up, each with different meanings to the name

But Wikis quickest Smile.

Without Wiki, my mind goes to either Adams 1st wife Hmm or "the Scarlet woman" from Aleister Crowleys theosophy. To be honest I'd forgotten the Frasier (or was it "Cheers" ?) reference ...

TheSecondOfHerName · 12/09/2017 09:54

Amelia makes me think of the condition where a baby is born with no limbs.

Melina sounds like melaena, which is not good.

Jade is old-fashioned slang for prostitute.

user1468353179 · 12/09/2017 18:40

My cousin is called Myra, but she's nearly 80. I've never heard a young girl called that name.

Racingraccoons · 12/09/2017 19:00

Sid also reminds me of Sid the Sloth!

And I have no idea why you'd name your child Randy.

I'm watching Scream, can you tell?

TowerRavenSeven · 12/09/2017 19:08

Maggie makes me think of the Rod Stewart song Maggie May and Mandy makes me think of Barry Manilow! I loved Katrina for a girl, still do, but would not use it now.
