Like Myra for example? What does that make you think of? Shock

Ainu?

Felix - cat food
Lana - anal spelled backwards, went straight off our list once I realised

KimKatCourtney · 10/09/2017 20:46

Casper - friendly ghost - do like it nonetheless

Marcipex · 10/09/2017 21:01

Poshjock, your mum sounds lovely.
There must really have been quite a few Myras of about the same age; I can see that it's a glamorous version of Mary.
There's a darling girl named Myra in Noel Streatfeilds book Apple Bough.

SumAndSubstance · 10/09/2017 21:02

My DD is Lola and the Kinks song has never bothered me at all, and I've only ever heard people bang on about it on MN.

To be fair, I wouldn't 'bang on about it' to someone in real life who said, "I have a daughter called Lola".

QueenofLouisiana · 10/09/2017 21:05

I know a Myra aged about 6. I've always wondered about the choice.

I'd guess Adolph is unlikely to ever be used again.

SaucyJack · 10/09/2017 21:06

My DD2's middle name is Isis- after the Egyptian goddess.

Sadly, the name has since become better known for very different reasons.

NickMyLipple · 10/09/2017 21:06

Alice - who the fuck is Alice?
Roxanne - put on the red light

Shame coz I really like Alice!

CaptWentworth · 10/09/2017 21:11

Dexter was popular a couple of years ago. Makes me immediately think of the Dexter drama. Expert murderer Confused

BlackJesus · 10/09/2017 21:12

I met a toddler Osama the other day. I was quite surprised

Lules · 10/09/2017 21:13

i wouldn't immediately think of Myra Hindley unless you specifically asked who I associated with that name. I'm in my early 30s so maybe her notoriety is fading?

I do always think of Madeline McCann when I hear Madeline though and wouldn't use it for that reason.

BoysofMelody · 10/09/2017 21:14

To be fair, I wouldn't 'bang on about it' to someone in real life who said, "I have a daughter called Lola"

Me neither, but running through my head would be:

' Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man,
And so is Lola.
Lo lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo lo Lola.'

GastonsWife · 10/09/2017 21:20

When I was a nursery nurse I knew twins Holly and Jessica. Seperatly they would have no connotations. Sad

BoysofMelody · 10/09/2017 21:21

A friend I used to work with was born in the UK to African Caribbean parents. He was born in the mid 60s and had a cousin of roughly the same age. His cousin's parents were devout Christians and like many African Caribbean parents of that era named their offspring after old testament figures. They called their newborn son Enoch.

Care to guess their surname?

Littlecaf · 10/09/2017 21:24

Alice is fine. There's lots of Alices, and that song isn't that well known. Roxanne the same. It's a specific dated popular culture thing rather than large scale historical thing like Myra, Adolf etc.

Now Maggie, erm, good for some, not for others?

WhereDoesThisRoadGo · 10/09/2017 21:25

Isabelle... As in '... really necessary on a bike?'. My ex ruined that name for me. Hmm

noodleaddict · 10/09/2017 21:27

I knew a Myra and honestly never thought of MH when I met/spoke to her. Maybe it's more when you see a name written down you get the bad associations rather than just connecting it with a person that you meet in the flesh? She was just a lovely person.

SEmyarse · 10/09/2017 21:28

Its odd because when I first met my friend Myra, about 10 years ago, I was immediately struck by her unfortunate name. But of course you totally get used to it.
It was only reading this thread that reminded me of this feeling, I hadnt thought about the connotations for a long time.

maxiflump1 · 10/09/2017 21:38

I know a 4 year old little girl called Isis. Born just before the terror group came to notoriety.

GastonsWife · 10/09/2017 21:46

Sorry for my ignorance but why does Alice have negative connotations?

RainbowPastel · 10/09/2017 22:00

I have an Auntie Myra she is lovely. She gets a lot of comments on her name.

SumAndSubstance · 10/09/2017 22:01

Gastonswife, it's a reference to this song:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Next_Door_to_Alice

BoysofMelody · 10/09/2017 22:06

In terms of names being rehabilitated the fallout from the Oscar Wilde scandal was so profound and the perceived 'taint' of homosexuality so dreaded that no boys born in Britain were named Oscar in the 20 years after the trial.

It remained very much a niche a name until the millennium, but since then it has exploded in popularity.

PoppyH56 · 10/09/2017 22:17

Charlie - people my age refer to cocaine as charlie Shock
Corey - in many reality tv shows (Geordie shore, eotb, towie), a Corey means willy

SuperBeagle · 10/09/2017 22:24

Delilah
Jezebel
Judas
Lucifer
Lilith
Cain

Jude always reminds me of the yellow Star of David badges Jews were forced to wear in the lead up to, and during, the Holocaust. But that doesn't seem to put people off.

manicinsomniac · 10/09/2017 22:36

Actually, when I read your OP, I thought 'what's wrong with that?' Seemed like a random example of a name and expected all the responses to be asking for an explanation.

I know who Myra Hindley was of course. But I didn't automatically make a connection to an individual with just a first name.
