AIBU calling my children "kids" ?

Just that really. My dad says kids and my mum says children. I say "kids". It's more informal and I prefer it to "children" which just sounds horribly formal.

However I've noticed on MN people often get annoyed by the use of the word "kids". Please tell me why? Are all my friends secretly judging me?

I saw someone refer to their step children as "skids" on here a little while back and they quite rightly got flamed.

Never seen anyone have an issue with "kids" on here though.

A kid is a young goat. A young human is a child.

It's just an informal word, and I don't understand the problem with using it in informal situations. At work (school) I use children; at home with DH I refer, for the most part, to our kids.

It's an informal word. God forbid we use words to mean more than one thing. There's far worse things you could be calling them.

Doramaybe · 10/09/2017 17:16

Whatever you call them they are expensive little shits, will leach every bit of kindness out of you, will hate you and love you in equal or not so equal measures, and test you to the limit.

But they are kids, children whatever. Who cares what we call them.

Is this a mn thing now?

MaisyPops · 10/09/2017 17:21

I couldn't care less. Who has time for that?

It's like a school i know that doesn't let you call students 'children/kids'. You have to call them 'learners'. So no more 'my pupils are making progress', it's 'the learners are making progress'.

I don't like to call my dc kids though do occasionally for ease. It's children or Cubs in this house. Not saying lions or bears are necessarily better than goats, just personal preference 😉
