AIBU calling my children "kids" ?

Just that really. My dad says kids and my mum says children. I say "kids". It's more informal and I prefer it to "children" which just sounds horribly formal.

However I've noticed on MN people often get annoyed by the use of the word "kids". Please tell me why? Are all my friends secretly judging me?

Personally I don't use it. Dislike it.

I don't like 'kids' for children at all, but it's a minor annoyance and not one I'm going to get too bothered about. Say it if you want to, there are probably plenty of words I use that others dislike, too.

The (mostly American?) use of the word 'kid' or worse 'kiddo' to refer to people in their twenties, on the other hand...

Not sure what it means to be 'given an appropriate language' but I love slang! It's so, like, cool!
I use kids and children interchangeably but I do address my three as goats ("C'mon goats, time to go," etc.).

3 DDs, so we've always said the/my/our girls or daughters. No particular opinion against people who have both saying "kids". It's a non issue.

Isn't it likely that people who have kids instead of children also have a Nanny (goat) instead of a Grandmother?

My friend uses kiddies. I hate it. She often writes on fb things like 'out for dinner with the kiddies'.

YANBU. My children are kids. Fuck what anyone else thinks.

No strong feelings about kids but agree with PP that "kiddies" is fucking awful.

I say kids (or girls) all the time. Rarely children as they are 17 and 14

They also use kid e.g. "There's this kid in my class who said..."

Miniature beasts of burden! 😂 I say kids or boys as mine are boys. My best advice on this and pretty much anything is to not give a toss what people think.

I use kids. I don't like 'smalls' or 'littlies' and twee stuff like that personally but I would struggle to care enough to actually judge people for it.

I think 'kids' is fine. 'Kiddies', on the other hand, makes me feel slightly nauseous for some reason.

I also quite like 'kiddo'.

I've seen 'little people' a lot recently. I don't like that, it makes me think of dwarfs

Kid is a corruption of the German "Kind" meaning child.

It is therefore perfectly correct to refer to one's offspring as such not to mention tres European!
