BLUESEAPARADISE · 09/09/2017 19:58

Sorry to mention Christmas but I am Looking at buying my DS a collection of lift the flap books for Christmas however if I buy new I am looking at spending £10/12 per a book where as if i buy second hand I am looking at buying them for £3/£4 each .. the description says they range from good to very good condition.

AIBU to buy second hand? Or should I buy new as it's for my DS Christmas present?

Must add DS is just starting to get into books and we have already had to fix a fair few books due to his excitement.

Surely there are no rules. But what you want (or don't!)!!!

TittyGolightly · 09/09/2017 19:59

*buy

custardcreamplease · 09/09/2017 19:59

Of course it's ok. He won't notice the difference at all. A book is a book

Ummmmgogo · 09/09/2017 20:00

Yanbu. it is never unreasonable to buy your child a book!

silverbell64 · 09/09/2017 20:00

He's not going to know the difference at his age is he. So it doesn't really matter.

mirime · 09/09/2017 20:01

I've bought DS second hand toys for Christmas. He's a Thomas fan and there are so many different trains!

Go for it.

FallingOrbit · 09/09/2017 20:01

Absolutely it's ok. So YANBU. That's the beauty with books, they can be read over and over by many different people. Buy them!

SprigofRosemary · 09/09/2017 20:02

I've decided this year to try to get Dd presents second hand. I just think "do it while they're young!"

Ilikesweetpeas · 09/09/2017 20:02

It's a sensible thing to do!

SheepyFun · 09/09/2017 20:02

I routinely buy things secondhand. But I have been disappointed sometimes at the quality - 'good' books have been complete, but sometimes visibly tatty (this is from Amazon). They were fine for what I needed, but you might want to bear it in mind.

RuggerHug · 09/09/2017 20:03

Yanbu. I think it was here I read where someone had their DCs clear out toys that weren't played with anymore to go to the charity shop the north pole where elves fix them up for other children who will play with them. If you're worried he might notice you could try that and he wouldn't think it's anything odd.

elQuintoConyo · 09/09/2017 20:04

My son has a bunch of books every Christmas, some new some second hand. He is 6 and still doesn't realise. Obviously they're nice, not ripped/written in etc. He'll be getting a £1.99 copy of Harry Potter this year Grin

Also a 2nd hand bike and 2nd hand electric train track, if i can find one.

livingthegoodlife · 09/09/2017 20:04

My kids are getting a whole load of second hand farm animals to complete their farm set, bulk bought for less than £1 an animal rather than £7+ per animal new! My kids won't notice. They'll be thrilled. Do it!!

ineedamoreadultieradult · 09/09/2017 20:05

My kids have had loads of second hand presents for Christmas and birthdays. When they were little it was books, toys, DVDs, clothes etc. More recently games consoles, phones, computer games etc. There is no need to buy new when there are good quality second hand options. It's a waste of money and harmful to the environment.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/09/2017 20:10

I've bought my dc second hand toys for Christmas.
I've done it because I thought it better to buy a bundle of say Paw Patrol or Octonauts with lots of accessories than pay for a super expensive new one with only one character.
Or a better quality used toy in good condition than a cheaper version but new.

They have always loved them and never questioned where they came from.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 09/09/2017 20:12

YANBU. Nothing wrong with secondhand. It's better for everyone really - saves you money, reduces waste, means you won't be so upset if he damages them... :)

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/09/2017 20:17

YANBU - nothing wrong with second hand. Last year, I got my son a massive box of Thomas the tank take and play stuff - 20 trains, tidmouth sheds, aquarium, steam works loads of track and other stuff for £60!

Would have cost an absolute fortune new, it was in great condition and DS loves itSmile

cookiefiend · 09/09/2017 20:18

YANBU especially for lift the flap books which are more likely to get a bit damaged when he uses them.

I have ordered quite a few used books (amazon and abebooks) I usually order the ones in 'very good condition and mostly they have been. I got one which was an ex library copy and I complained as I expect very good to be in the condition it would be if we had owned it for a few years, not all written over etc and they refunded some of the cost which was fine.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/09/2017 20:19

Nothing wrong with 2nd hand, whether books or toys. My dd's MiL found a really fantastic toy for baby Gds' birthday in a charity shop recently. Anyone who feels they 'ought' to spend a bit more more can always give some cash for a savings account - it'll be much appreciated when they're older.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 09/09/2017 20:21

Playmobile, Lego and books are often far better second hand because you can afford to get more

Sayyouwill · 09/09/2017 20:22

I always buy secondhand. I clean it up and may tweak it slightly, but hardly any of my kids toys are brand new. I don't have the money!

bridgetreilly · 09/09/2017 20:23

For a present, I would look for ones that say very good or excellent condition. 'Good' can mean more wear than I'd like.

Italiangreyhound · 09/09/2017 20:24

Absolutely fine. And join a library where all books will be 25th hand. Grin

fourandnomore · 09/09/2017 20:26

Some of the best books are those you can't actually buy new anymore! I would definitely buy second hand books.

Corcory · 09/09/2017 20:28

I always buy some of the presents second hand. Last your my 13 year old got an Xbox 1 off e bay, was boxed and everything, was half price. You would never know. I also buy second hand games - for their x boxes etc. only ever had one that wasn't working.
