Sorry to mention Christmas but I am Looking at buying my DS a collection of lift the flap books for Christmas however if I buy new I am looking at spending £10/12 per a book where as if i buy second hand I am looking at buying them for £3/£4 each .. the description says they range from good to very good condition.

AIBU to buy second hand? Or should I buy new as it's for my DS Christmas present?

Must add DS is just starting to get into books and we have already had to fix a fair few books due to his excitement.

I bought my dd loads of Sylvanian Families sets from ebay when she was younger - much more affordable and she was too young to notice the difference (I had been worried that she'd notice the - unexpected - Chinese writing on one of the boxes, but luckily she didn't comment on it).

I often buy second hand for all the reasons people have said above. I would be slightly wary with lift the flap books if you can't physically see the book first though as the flaps can often get badly damaged or torn off which makes them less fun to read. Maybe look for local buying sites / book fayres etc so you can see the quality - or check out the bookpeople website who often have big discounts on book sets.

Go for it! Definitely not being unreasonable

I've bought so many 2nd toys and books!

Last Christmas I got a massive bag of schleich figures for £10 and they were my 9 year olds favourite present.

I have bought loads seconds hand. Sylvanian, playmobil. All sorts. You can get far more for your money and my daughters understand that. I bought my youngest a book to put away for Xmas. Used very good condition off Amazon. I cannot see any marks on the spine so doesn't look like it have even been read. Getting some things second hand means they get more off their Xmas list than buying it all new!

When my DC were young and we were broke, everything was second hand. Not tatty and always in working order. The DC didn't know any different. Recycling at its best, I say. YANBU.

I bought DS second hand Octonauts for Christmas last year. I could have afforded 1 or 2 gups with a couple of figures new or a massive bundle on eBay. It was a no brainer. The look on his face as he opened the massive box "Santa" had brought - confirmed it was the right decision.

Do it, he is way too young to care about having new things lol

SukiTheDog · 09/09/2017 20:56

Nothing wrong with that at all. Love, love love to recycle. And he's a child, it won't bother him, one bit!

Etymology23 · 09/09/2017 20:58

Definitely nothing wrong with second hand for books. I'd tend towards VG condition where available as good can be a bit variable.

I buy adults second hand presents too...

I think what you are failing to appreciate is that Santa lives in THE NORTH POLE!!!! He cares about environmentalism more than just about anyone else on the planet and loves to give secondhand pre-loved gifts. He's so happy about it he'll often give a few extra toys to the children who are happy to receive them. And what child cares too much about someone having already played with their Batcave when it means that they also get a Spiderman house, a Fortress of Solitude and lots of extra figures and vehicles? (For less cost to me than just the Batcave new.)
