Does anyone hear this a lot or is it just me?

"Give the lady your pennies ... Mummy hasn't got any pennies ..."

Grr. Just say "money" FFS!

Oh I agree, but I thought it was just me being weird. I hate that word in that context!!!

Yukbuck · 07/09/2017 20:20

Wow yabu! It's just another word for it. Have you not got better things to be worrying about?
Penny is the singular. Pennies is the plural.

kateclarke · 07/09/2017 20:21

I hate that as well, so twee.

Fluffyears · 07/09/2017 20:26

Ex-sil used that phrase. I gave my niece £15 fotchristmas and she said 'oh thabksubt fluffy for the big penny!' Eh?

sparklediamonds · 07/09/2017 20:30

Not at all, Yuk

I sit here night after night after night seething about it Wink

Isn't it just an antiquated usage? It's not that long ago that most things in daily life cost, literally, pennies. For example, in 1970 a loaf of bread cost 9p and the average weekly wage was around £32...

sparklediamonds · 07/09/2017 20:40

Seems to be something people use generically to children to me.

Autofillcontact · 07/09/2017 20:41

Seems like a strange thing to get worked up about Grin

museumum · 07/09/2017 20:41

I think it's very Scottish - are you?
Like going for "the messages" Grin

MorrisZapp · 07/09/2017 20:44

I was watching an American YouTuber today enthusing that a product was 'worth every penny'. Don't they use cents?

SonicBoomBoom · 07/09/2017 20:46

DH tells me he's "going to work to earn some pennies".

He's Scottish museumum.

sparklediamonds · 07/09/2017 20:48

Nope, not Scottish. Very worked up, though. Furious.

MrsLettuce · 07/09/2017 20:48

Yeah, it is something people use generically to children. Certainly. But, the language we use with children (and the language usage that is passed between children) is an Interesting Thing in linguistics. Some Odd Things happen with it.

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 07/09/2017 20:49

YANBU. I'm nowhere near Scotland and I've heard this. It's twee and irritating.

LongWavyHair · 07/09/2017 20:50

Aww you'd hate me Grin I say it to my kids.
(Not sorry! Wink)

ParkheadParadise · 07/09/2017 20:51

@museumum I go for my messages every weekGrinGrinGrin

2017SoFarSoGood · 07/09/2017 20:52

SparkleDiamonds I forgive you for not being Scottish. Grin

I do have a rather large jar of pennies. Will that give you the absolute rage? I promise never to refer to it again.

(YADNBU - it is annoying)

SandyDenny · 07/09/2017 20:53

I thought it was just me who hated it too but then I don't understand why anyone uses different words with children. Why would you teach them the wrong word for something then have to teach them the correct word later - "horsie""doggie" etc

Quite gives me the rage

TwatteryFlowers · 07/09/2017 20:53

I use the word "pennies" when talking about money with my children. I'm not sure why, it's just something I say. They know what the terms "money" and "coins" mean though so it doesn't appear to be holding them back. Sorry if something I say to my own children annoys you.

mrsRosaPimento · 07/09/2017 20:53

I hate all talking down to dcs. I also hate it when a parent says 'let Mummy do it.' No, it's 'let me do it.'

Penny4UrThoughts · 07/09/2017 20:56

Yes, americans use cents, but the single cent coin gets called a penny sometimes too.

And lots of Brits use American idioms and words, it could well happen the other way round too.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 07/09/2017 20:56

When we were children you could actually buy quite a bit with pennies. I love hearing people say it, I only wish my Dad was still here to say it all over again to his Grandchildren. We all learnt to count with pennies, how to do basic maths with pennies & how to pay in shops with pennies. Yes actual 1 and half penny pieces.

Tapandgo · 07/09/2017 20:56

Yep - going for my messages here too! Can't say the pennies thing bothers me though.

DaisysStew · 07/09/2017 20:59

You'd all hate me, I say pennies, din dins, refer to myself in the third person... I used to be normal before I had a kid, I promise! Grin

TeenTimesTwo · 07/09/2017 21:00

I don't mind pennies or doggie.
I loathe it when people say 'monkey' when they mean gorilla, or similar misnaming of animals!
