Does anyone hear this a lot or is it just me?

"Give the lady your pennies ... Mummy hasn't got any pennies ..."

Grr. Just say "money" FFS!

Quack I would actually say it's £12 & he'd ask how many pennies is that, the response is then 1200 pennies! I wouldn't initially offer up the cost in pennies but that is how he likes to work it out. He has Birthday money to spend & rather than him waste it on expensive tat he won't play with more than once I am trying to make him understand how much things cost!

Ffs. I have more of a problem with adults saying "5 sleeps to..." than kiddy words.

Justblockthebitch · 09/09/2017 16:03

I do cringe at money being described as "pennies" as well, cringed at it when I was a child and still cringe now.

SeamusMacDubh · 09/09/2017 16:42

I say pennies Grin I don't see the problem with it, it's something my 3 YO understands. We also look for pennies (and often find them) when we are walking though town or wherever. I can't see it as something that can bother people so much, though evidently it does. It's not rude or even inaccurate.

QuackDuckQuack · 09/09/2017 17:49

RandomName9 - I like that as it makes all of the tat kids clamour for sound outrageously expensive. Grin

Yep....or 'ickle', 'hospickle', 'hollibobs'...

ShovellerDuck · 09/09/2017 19:54

I seethe when I hear "one pence" but at least it's not "one pee".
We do not have a coin called a pee but people say it all the time. Copper coins should be scrapped, they're worth nothing and then we could lose the stupidity of every price ending in a nine. That thing costs £4, not £3.99!

SeamusMacDubh · 09/09/2017 20:02

If we scrapped copper coins every thing would have to be priced ending with a 0 or 5 otherwise it would mean everyone would have to be able to pay by card. You wouldn't be able to pay £3.57 in cash without coppers. Or maybe you are someone that throws their loose change in the bin/street like an ex of mine because shrapnel is beneath you and only for peasants Hmm

MrsHathaway · 09/09/2017 20:48

In other countries without coppers they still price in numbers ending in other than 0 and 5 - but your total at the till is rounded up or down.

I'm in a country with no 1 and 2 cent coins. We do have .01-.04 and .06-.09. When paying by card the amount remains the same. When paying in cash the amou t is rounded up or down. .01-.02 and .06-.07 are rounded down to nearest 0 or .05 and the others rounded up to the nearest .10

It works. Nobody really cares to be honest. Surprised it hasn't happened in the UK yet.

I'm still not getting why it's easier for a small child to say pennies rather than coins. Surely it's more confusing to the child to call all coins pennies then turn around a couple years later and tell them that they're actually NOT all called pennies, some are nickels, dimes, etc. (whatever your equivalent is).
