Is it secre-terry or sec-ret-tree?

RES-tront

Agree that posh accents reduce vowels as much as possible. I have a reasonably posh accent and I'm frequently astonished by how much vowel other people squeeze into words (especially my children's names).

Ontopofthesunset · 07/09/2017 16:13

Sec-ruh-tree. Sec-ruh-terry sounds American to me .
Rest-rong (where the final 'ng' is really a Frenchy nasal 'n', not a full-blown English 'ng') Again, rest-or-rong is an American pronunciation to me.

MrsHathaway · 07/09/2017 16:14

ENN-vlope

Not ON-vuh-lope

NiteFlights · 07/09/2017 16:15

RES-tron I think, but you're making me doubt myself. I'm sitting in Pret muttering to myself!

RocketQueen79 · 07/09/2017 16:21

Rest-rawnt pisses me right off.

I say:
Seck-ra-tary
Gah-ridge
Cut-lery
Wenz-day
Rest-or-ront
Scone - rhymes with cone
Veg-ta-buls
Chew-na
Thee-a-ter

EvansOvalPies · 07/09/2017 16:27

TURM-eric (not chewmeric)
CardomoM (not moN)
Tyoo-na

I'm mashing potatoes, wondering how I pronounce envelope. Starting to doubt my own abilities as to how I should speak. I think I say onvelope,.

Almond or Arh-mond?

EvansOvalPies · 07/09/2017 16:29

And it's ESpresso (not expresso) - had to correct DS on that one just yesterday.

EvansOvalPies · 07/09/2017 16:30

Rocket - I agree with all of yours, except for scone. It's SCONN (of course). What is wrong with you? Grin

RocketQueen79 · 07/09/2017 16:33

I'm common as muck...

MrsHathaway · 07/09/2017 16:34

Almond or Arh-mond

AH-mund

DH says "OLL-mond" Confused which is all kinds of wrong. Mind you, he also says HOLL-fords for Halfords so I think he may just be linguistically challenged.

RocketQueen79 · 07/09/2017 16:34

I grew up pronouncing Look as LEWK and Book as BEWK. Only recently had that beaten out of me.

RocketQueen79 · 07/09/2017 16:35

Oh and it's ALL-Mund in my world.

EvansOvalPies · 07/09/2017 16:50

I'm an All-mund person too.

Grew up in Wales, where people pronounce tooth as in the 'oo' like in 'look or book'. Short vowel sound, rather than the longer tooth (hard to explain).

Now live in SE England and have a friend from London who pronounces tooth in exactly that way, and everyone looks at her sideways. I've not heard it pronounced that way outside of Wales.

EvansOvalPies · 07/09/2017 16:52

Hmm - auto-correct took out a couple of o's in my toooooth

MaidOfStars · 07/09/2017 16:56

Sec-ruh-TAIR-ee
CUT-luh-ree
VEG-ta-buls
REST-ront
DJOOL-ree

SomeOtherFuckers · 07/09/2017 17:02

The second sec-re-tree
I'm Yorkshire

EvansOvalPies · 07/09/2017 17:02

D JOOL-ree?
What fresh hell is this?
Where did the extra initial D come from, and what happened to the middle 'e'

It is spelled Jewellery ie, Jewel-E-ry. You don't even have to accentuate the middle e, but for goodness' sake, pronounce the first two syllables, Jew-El ry

blueberrypie0112 · 07/09/2017 17:05

I am southerner (U.S) who is severe-to-profound hearing loss in both war since birth so I May not be pronouncing correctly, but I am going to let you know how I say it anyhow:

Sec -A-terry

BabyDubsEverywhere · 07/09/2017 17:08

I love these threads. My dc think I'm nuts trying to say things out loud :D

Almond = Ol-mnd
Tooth = tuth
Restaurant = res-tront
Envelope = en-v-lope
Scone = scon
Vegetables = veg-t-bls
Theatre = thee-a-ta
Tuna = tchew-na (sounds like chew at start but definite 't' sound, too)
Secretary = sec-ruh-tree

Being from the Black Country may explain some of mine...

Sek-eh-tree

FuzzyCustard · 07/09/2017 17:26

Sek-ruh-tre and cut-luh-re

FuzzyCustard · 07/09/2017 17:27

Ah-mund
Jew -el -ree (I especially hate Joolery)

Bubwiser · 07/09/2017 17:27

How would you pronounce 'trans' as in transport, transfer, transform?
Rhyming with barns or
rhyming with bans?

haba · 07/09/2017 17:31

My children moan at me for saying:
Tyuna (never chew-na!)
tyube (of toothpaste)
Lyu-is (John Lewis)
Kyu (gardens)

I say sec'r'tri
And sconn
