fucking duvet cover

I don't generally iron stuff, as I'm quite lazy. However, today just did a deep-clean of our bedroom and realised once I was finished that my creased bed linen was ruining the effect of the otherwise lovely clean room. Hmm I thought, maybe this once it would be worth making the effort to iron the duvet cover and pillow cases and enjoy at least a few hours of a beautiful neat room before it turns back into usual pit of despair.

Well, what a fucking waste of time that was.

It took SO LONG. King size duvet cover. I think it took me almost half an hour, is that normal? And then the complete pisser, it didn't really get out the creases!!!! I mean it looked better, I think, but it didn't look hotel-beautiful or like when my MIL does it. We have a decent iron (as far as I know, DH manages to make his shirts look nice). What went wrong? Do people actually do this on a regular basis, and if so are you the same people who wash your sheets like three times a week, and if so how do you ever get anything else done?! And how do you get the actual sodding creases out????

So as well as my questions above, AIBU to never iron a duvet cover again, as it doesn't work and no one needs to know or care about my wrinkly bed?

Make the bed then iron it

BannedFromNarnia · 07/09/2017 08:42

Ironing is bullshit and the biggest waste of time ever. Fuck it. Hang your clothes properly to dry, iron things that matter and reclaim weeks of your life by not ironing bloody duvet covers anymore.

Sleepingonthebus · 07/09/2017 08:46

I fold mine as soon as I take them off the line and they never need ironed. Same with sheets but I do iron pillowcases.

burninghigh · 07/09/2017 08:48

My mum was a top ironer. I think it is practice and knowing when to fold. She has also been seen ironing a duvet whilst on the bed.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 07/09/2017 08:50

You need a bedspread, sorts this issue out a treat Grin

PaperdollCartoon · 07/09/2017 08:54

I struggle between hating ironing bedding and wanting to think it pointless, and loving the look and feel of freshly pressed bedding.

I solved it by buying Ikea bedding that actually says 'do not iron'. I shake it out whilst slightly damp and hang on the line if dry or over a door/bannister if not. No creases. For years I did battle with 100% cotton - that stuff is a nightmare. No more.

Witchitywoo · 07/09/2017 08:57

I always used to iron the duvet cover and took great pride in making it cease free. And the pleasure when making the bed and standing back to admire the perfectly smooth surface was damn near orgasmic! I have, however, come to my senses and realised it's a waste of time and energy as the next day it's all crumpled. So now I wash and dry it then throw pillows and decorative throw over it when it's on the bed. Hey Presto! Can't see the creases!!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 07/09/2017 09:10

my bed always looks fantastic and I don't iron anything, just get yourself a lovely throw. And cushions.

BeyondThePage · 07/09/2017 09:17

We have one of these - really just a dust-cover for the bed, but hides the wrinkly duvet cover.

It gets aired on the washing line from time to time when it is dry outside.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/09/2017 09:22

50/50 is usually the best, in my experience.
I always use Lenor softener, and tumble dry my duvet cover, on its own, then straight back on the bed. No creases, no ironing.😄

hamsterdance · 07/09/2017 09:22

Hmmm Ikea non-iron, you say Paperdoll? This sounds interesting.

My DH has Strong Feelings about faffery on the bed, and as a result all non-essential cushions, throws, etc are banned on the basis that they will end up in a crumpled heap on the floor. I have one big cushion which I am allowed because it is functional (for reading in bed).

I might give it one more go, but it's one of those things I just know about myself deep down, I'm not an ironed-sheets person. I am a sit on the sofa person. I might swallow my pride and ask DH for advice on the proper hanging out of said bedding (DH does all washing and is a ninja at hanging clothes out, other than his shirts there really is hardly ever a need to iron anything. I am responsible for changing beds and therefore I tend to do the washing of them as well, and it sounds like I need to be more militant about hanging them out properly.) If I could get them semi-uncreased with minimal effort then that would feel like some kind of achievement.

Life is too short to be ironing duvet covers! Although they do look better if you do

DrumrollCheese · 07/09/2017 09:53

hamster admittedly I don't do much ironing of my own stuff. I have a flat sheet and various blankets on the bed. I can only be bothered to iron if I'm getting paid for it Grin

itstimetostop · 07/09/2017 09:54

I send mine to the laundry, £5 and it comes back hotel style.

PiratePanda · 07/09/2017 09:54

God, what a waste of time!

If linen is super creased, just put it in a short wash and hang it out to dry -- that works as well as an iron for most people's purposes.

PetalHead · 07/09/2017 10:01

As a slight aside, I once had a colleague who got a burn on her stomach from trying to iron her top while wearing it!

Allthebestnamesareused · 07/09/2017 10:04

I iron them when they are very very slightly damp still

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 07/09/2017 10:08

Primark stuff is likely to still look shit after ironing IME, no matter the fabric content. I've got one which was cut skewiff so it twisted the minute it was washed and hasn't looked right ever since. More expensive bedding won't do that.

wildbhoysmama · 07/09/2017 10:11

I used to iron all bedding, towels, pants (eek!) but then I had 3 children. Now everything is folded and smoothed before stored. Kids' beds are all 100% cotton (they are itchy little feckers) and look fine when tucked in tight/ blankie folded on top. Ours is the 100% cotton but striped sateen, hotel thingies, so crease v little. All white so everything matches then as pp have said huge throw over whole thing and juj up with nice pillow covers/ cushions (despite OH complaining spiritedly about these but they make me feel semi organised and stylish. However, I will admit to having a cushion obsession and change them with season/ will!).

PiggyPlumPie · 07/09/2017 10:17

But once you've slept in it it goes all creased again! I only iron pillow cases - DD was horrified but soon saw the error of her ways Grin

Mustang27 · 07/09/2017 10:38

Just iron it on the bed next time

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 07/09/2017 18:46

Love how people are amazed at other people that don't iron their duvet covers.

Seriously, how long do you spend looking at your bed? I only see it in the morning when I get out of it and then at night when I fall into it.

JWrecks · 07/09/2017 19:17

I'm pretty sure that my DH and I are the only people to have ever seen my bedding, and even we only see it for the few minutes we're getting into it and the few minutes we're getting out of it.

I do actually make the bed, but I'm not ironing any of it for love nor money.

Auntiedahlia · 07/09/2017 19:21

300 thread count duvet cover. No higher a thread count because they crease terribly. Wash and dry hanging over the bannister upstairs. Never seen an iron but dries smooth.
