AIBU to think that parents should buy the correct uniform and stop moaning

Loveluck7 · 06/09/2017 17:07

I am getting increasingly irritated by people on FB moaning that their child's human rights have been violated because they were put into isolation for having the wrong uniform.

I understand that some rules can seem ridiculous but unfortunately some bad parents who have let their child wear spray on trousers and tiny skirts, have necessitated schools stipulating the exact items they need to wear.

Isolation does seem a harsh punishment when it is the parent's fault but how else can schools enforce the rules when some parent's think rules do not apply to them? The child cannot attend class without trousers and parent's would be angry if the child was sent home.

You also often find that it is these parent's who also complain when a school is no good at discipline, yet will not follow the rules themselves.

My sympathies Cosmic. My niece has a pair of black trousers that she wore last term but suddenly this term they are no longer suitable. SIL received a phone call from the school demanding that she buys a new pair. As SIL isn't paid until the end of the month, my niece will spend September in isolation. My niece quite rightly is confused as she says " last term these trousers were fine, but weeks later they are going to ruin my education"!

CosmicPineapple · 06/09/2017 23:41

Toad those were the exact same words my DS said.
He keeps saying they were ok last term. Sorry mum. I am ok in iso. I will wait.

I am so angry and ashamed and sorry.

Right now I want to go in to school and discuss it but I cannot afford to take a morning off work to talk about the fact I cannot replace his shoes asap as I cannot afford to. Ha!

PortiaCastis · 07/09/2017 00:05

Please do not be ashamed Cosmic your situation is not your doing and the school is being so stupid it's untrue. I don't know what to tell you except chin up which is not a lot of help. I'm upset thinking about your situation and because I'm actually lost for words.

Yes lets start a campaign so parents are not put in this impossible position.

user1498726699 · 07/09/2017 00:10

Cosmic can you cut the sodding 2mm label off your DS's shoes and send in a note that you believe they now meet regulations and if your son is to spend a further day in isolation, you want to know in writing how they are going to deliver him an education that meets the curriculum in that time?

user1498726699 · 07/09/2017 00:16

Ignore me if it's not something that can be cut off.

I am very relieved that one of my DC now attends an SN school that is very lax on uniform requirements, no more blazers or ties and he wore his new 'trainer' type shoes which he is comfortable in on his first day today! He can take his jumper off (which doesn't have to be a logo one) if he is hot even - whoo hoo!

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 07/09/2017 00:19

Luckily our school is not to bad but the supplier for badged items is rubbish. You cannot order online so we have to drive 25 miles there to find that the right size is not in stock. They don't know when it will be available.I bought dd oversized to grow into stuff when she started, the school became an academy, the logo changed and quality went down.Dd went to school in a darned jumper as they only last a year with running repairs.
Still I have learnt to darn.
Looking at the policy that she came home with today skirts were not there.Hope this is a typo as we gave up on finding decent school type trousers that fit years ago.
t the policy

MsMommie · 07/09/2017 00:23

My children have to have 'school logo' everything, so after spending the best part of £900 on 3 uniforms (not including bags, coats, trainers etc) I can fully understand why they would moan.

My children HAVE to have a rugby shirt (£37) and my eldest has just gone into year 9 and has never ever played rugby or used this mandatory rugby shirt. Yet if it's not in their kit bag they will get detention?
He's never used the mandatory rugby socks either

Bearfrills · 07/09/2017 00:24

Is a campaign something MNHQ might be interested In? Can't tag them on my phone.

Uniforms, if used by a school, should be widely available for e.g., from supermarkets or high street retailers, and there should be absolutely no requirement to buy from "the school supplier". It's penalising children and placing a financial burden on families who struggle to meet the cost.

My DC who are in school are still only little but have to wear uniform. It's black or grey school trousers, skirt, shorts, or pinafore. A white or red school shirt or polo shirt. A red jumper or cardigan. Black, sensible school shoes, no trainers or heels. You can buy school logo jumpers at the office but they're not compulsory. I usually get the DC a logo jumper each (£8 a jumper) and a couple of supermarket v-neck knitted jumpers (which I think look smarter than the school sweatshirts anyway). Trousers, shirts, etc I get from the supermarkets or high street as does everyone else. Eldest starts middle school next year and they have an official supplier. Apparently it is not compulsory and parents are free to buy from the high street however everything external has to have the school logo on it and its all a shitty maroon colour, where the eff do you find that on the high street!? So really it is compulsory. Jumpers start at £11 and up, along with school hoodies, official PE shirts, rugby shirt, etc. It's going to cost around £80 for DS before I even buy plain white shirts or trousers whereas this year I've managed to kit out three children for around £180 Including shoes and costs.

ReanimatedSGB · 07/09/2017 01:15

DS school has just done the rebrand thing. New name, new uniform (completely new everything, including different pullovers for different year groups.) £150. Thank fuck for lovely mother-out-law who always insists on paying for schoolwear.
Admittedly the school had negotiated a one-off discount with the supplier as long as you bought it all in one go, but the supplier was going a bit nuts when we went to buy it as they were starting to run out of sizes...

HelenaDove · 07/09/2017 02:27

VoiceofReason........I take it that head was sorting out any bullying that was happening outside school then And they wernt saying it was outside school time or off school property so there is nothing they can do..............after all if they can dictate what shoes can be worn off school property.......

I dont have DC but have been on MN for six years and these uniform threads get more shocking every year.

Expensiveuniform thats eye watering.

Cosmic the treatment of your son is disgusting. And WTF with Helga from Allo Allo making those kids line up in the rain. FFS!

If anyone starts a petition i will sign it.

Ridiculous emotionally abusive behaviour from some schools.

scottishdiem · 07/09/2017 05:01

CosmicPineapple, its not your fault. Its people like OP who give succour to schools by saying "increasingly irritated by people on FB moaning that their child's human rights have been violated because they were put into isolation for having the wrong uniform.". If parents like the OP understood that these uniform issues are nothing to do with actual education and treating children decently then children like yours would not be treated in this way.

We DO have parents though who do not read the info sent home, ignore the mannequin in the foyer and don't come to parents evening. They still purchase trainers and say they can't afford school shoes. We give them a pair- they can trade. You soon find out who is genuine hardship....

Also we provide uniform for those in need.

We also teach in isolation. A full curriculum with practicals. There is always an alternative though. It's not illegal. If ofsted came in they would want to know I was meeting the needs of the students in there and I do- work and Sen wise. I know my audience. And make sure I am prepared.

Like I said we all need to sing from the same hymn sheet. I think on here you will have genuine need and cases of ridiculous rules. A bit like Maisy though our children do have the option of going elsewhere. Lots of schools. Not as popular mind you but you had six weeks as parents to check and double check policy. We were in school a lot in the hols.

I appreciate there are some ridiculous stories on here mind you!

CosmicPineapple · 07/09/2017 07:07

Here are the shoes. I have cut the tag off user Smile
These shoes with tag were fine 8 weeks ago. They are black leather lace ups and comfy. DS has size 10 flat feet bless him.

I am not sure how that tiny tag caused my son to be put in iso but there you go.

I think I will send him with a note stating they must call me before they put him in isolation.

AIBU to think that parents should buy the correct uniform and stop moaning
chockwockydoda · 07/09/2017 07:11

Just buy the uniform if you can't afford it telephone the finance office they have funds to help pay and very often have second hand items for sale at greatly reduced costs. I'm sick of people droning on about it. It's not a new craze it's something that you knew was inevitable. It's people that buy new uniform even when it's not needed that make me laugh just because it's a new school year.

wannabestressfree · 07/09/2017 07:11

So they are vans. Is the problem the shoe? Or the fact it's a label? We don't allow visible labels either.
Why not go to primark and buy a pound pair of plimsolls?

Expemsiveuniform · 07/09/2017 07:17

Clock. How do I buy the uniform when I don't have money to pay for it? Don't be dense. I can't afford it means I do not have the hundreds of pounds in my bank account to pay for it.

There is no help available from the school. I have asked in the past and there is no second hand uniform available from the school because their arrangement with the shops precludes that.

Where the fuck am I supposed to magic up the money when I have twenty quid to do me until Saturday?

chockwockydoda · 07/09/2017 07:17

Next require you to purchase your uniform from them although at a reduced cost as do other clothes shops. You can also only buy certain items for your uniform.

Expemsiveuniform · 07/09/2017 07:18

And yes. It's inevitable. And I have no choice. I already sent my DD in a boys blazer that got her ripped to shreds. And I have had to recycle shoes from one child to another.

Some of us have no choice.

Expemsiveuniform · 07/09/2017 07:18

*chock.

Have you read the thread at all?

CosmicPineapple · 07/09/2017 07:21

Its the label.
The shoes are black leather no other marks or logos.
I bought them after the easter break checked with school before hand to make sure they were ok.
He wore them until end of July. Went back yesterday and was put in iso because of the tag.
I cant get to Primark before the weekend.
My mum has agreed to lend me the money to get new shoes.

chockwockydoda · 07/09/2017 07:28

Yes I have read the thread and it's just wound me up more. I've been a single parent without a pot to piss in and still managed to buy my child uniform without winging. Self righteous I know but it's not there to trip people up it's there to make all of the kids the same. If they all wear the same no one is better than anyone else. If you are seriously destitute then ask for help don't winge.

chockwockydoda · 07/09/2017 07:32

Expensiveuniform

You have known for an entire year your child would need uniform..... £2 a week put aside? It's not my fault you only have £20. Some people don't even have £20.

NoYouDontKnowItAll · 07/09/2017 07:33

Why not go to primark and buy a pound pair of plimsolls?

Maybe because at many schools it isn't allowed or loads of us would be doing it

My daughter's shoes were identical to some on the approved list but because we didn't get them at the approved supplier she was isolated. In other words punished for not being a cash cow for the school

wannabestressfree · 07/09/2017 07:37

If you meet the definition of needing assistance e.g. Wtc and earning under a certain amount they DO have to help you.

The problem with the shoes is that is says 'vans' and is a label.
