AIBU in wanting to buy a school coat with reflective strips?

I thought it was practically impossible to get coats that didn't have reflective strips on! One year that must have been the case. Now I want to get one for my Y6 DD who will be walking home in the dark some nights with clubs on etc, and everything is just plain. No way on earth I'm going to get her to wear a hi-vis jacket, and those snappy things she'll just lose.... has anyone found a nice, warm, waterproof coat that has reflective strips on? It would make me feel so much better!!

The H&M proper winter/ski coats usually do, but I haven't looked this year.
Same with Didriksons, they always seem to have reflective bits on the arms and back.
I'm off to look now, DS2 needs a new winter coat this year...

Notevilstepmother · 04/09/2017 12:09

Not sure if it's waterproof but it loooks warm and you could spray it with waterproofing from a camping shop.

My tall 9yo has a coat from ?Nutmeg which is ENTIRELY reflective, as in he glows like cats eyes under artificial lights, but which just looks dull grey in natural light. It's the best item of clothing I've ever bought.

I agree that reflective bits should be standard on children's coats and especially for older children who are more likely to be walking alone.

(Sorry - am blaming toddler climbing on me)

I think you can get invisible reflective spray which can be put on any coat - so she could have something super trendy which lights up like a Christmas tree in headlights. I'll have a Google so you can see what I mean.

MrsHathaway · 04/09/2017 12:13

Spray.

In my neighborhood the secondary school kids have reflective strips on their bags. On the front straps and along the back. Might be an easier option.

I don't think you're unreasonable, but it felt like an unreasonable request when trying to replace DS1's when the old one gave out towards the end of the winter in sales season.

I found a lovely warm, practical, reasonably priced weather proof coat other than the fact that the camouflage pattern of blues and greys made it an excellent colourway for being near invisible on a dull winter's afternoon/ evening. It was the only one we could find that met the demanding criteria of fit, practicality and DS actually being willing to wear it. A bit of reflective piping would have made a massive difference.

I tend to go round the outdoors/ walking shops for that kind of thing as they tend to be better insulated and more waterproofed than fashion retailers.

How about this, how small is she? Would small women's size fit her?

I'm tempted to get one myself for cycling.

I bought a wee led flashing light that fits into my bag, you could attach it to a jacket zip. I have to walk along a road with no pavement and a blind corner so got it to ensure cars notice me.

CaveMum · 04/09/2017 12:28

The P.O.P shell coats all have reflective strips, but they are not cheap! Best to get one in the sale (what we do!)

I bought ds, who is 6, a coat with reflective
stripes from tesco last week. It's black and the strips are all along the back and the hood. They had bigger sizes and the hood is furry and fluffy and I don't think it really matters that it said boy on the label rather than girl - I don't think anyone can tell.

stargirl1701 · 04/09/2017 12:29

Polarn O Pyret usually do.

Fluffyears · 04/09/2017 12:30

Like this, can't get link to work. Attach to zip and all she has to do is press it and it start to flash quite brightly.

M&S currently have some nice ones which are reasonably priced.

TakeMe2Insanity · 04/09/2017 12:32

In Scandinavia they have reflective things that attach on to the coat's zip. It is a standard purchase there.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 04/09/2017 12:39

thank you so much for all your suggestions! I am having a look through. It does have to be a warm coat rather than an outer jacket IYSWIM (we live up north with howling winds off the moors etc Grin).

We had a look in Mountain Warehouse this morning on our trek round the shops, but nothing was reflective.

mrshathaway that looks like a great idea! It's over £20 though with the P&P - you don't happen to know if there is a shop we can get it in? Lookin on the web I didn't find anything.

twatteryflowers that sounds like just the sort of thing I'm looking or but can't find! You don't have a lovely link, by any chance?

lashy we were also in M&S this morning (I was everywhere this morning...!) and nothing seemed to have anything reflective on it? But I'd be very happy to be corrected!!

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 04/09/2017 12:42

I do take your point about the wee flashy things, but I would rather it was a bit more all over - piping's so good as it does show that it's a person. She has to cross a big junction and there are lights everywhere from cars going in different directions, bikes etc - so it would make me happier if I knew she was showing up as a human shape, if that makes sense?

CaveMum · 04/09/2017 12:43

The advantage of the P.O.P she'll coats is that you can zip in a fleece, but of course they are extra!

They also do padded winter coats: www.polarnopyret.co.uk/navy-kids-waterproof-winter-ski-jacket-60346074-483-6?tmsb=h79qelp&tmrl=d4nmf&tmsl=6-12y-category-6-block-8kkeyd&tmty=w&tmcv=70&tmcs=3yaadb6

otterlynutty · 04/09/2017 12:46

There's some gorgeous reflective sew on patches on ebay but they're from Germany so P&P is high.

I don't know if these would be any good? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SILVER-Reflective-Self-Adhesive-Stickers-for-Bike-Car-Buggy-Pram-School-Wheels-/192175263977?roken=cUgayN

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 04/09/2017 12:47

CaveMum that looks so nice, and just what I'd like to get her.... apart from it being twice as much as the budget for her coat Sad

OP posts:
RupertPsmith · 04/09/2017 12:49

Have a look at Uniqlo. DD has a gilet from there with reflective bits but I don't know if that's standard.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 04/09/2017 12:51

otterlynutty I think I could get her to customise her jacket - tho I think I ight have to look for ones that are for clothing. I was lookin at sew on tape too, but thinking that the sort of material the coats are made of might not be suitable for sewing on - they might just rip if you start putting holes in it?

aargh who would have thought it could be so complicated?!!
