Pizza on the floor - AIBU?

Yesterday me and DP popped into Greggs while we were out. I love the pizza slices from there, DP has never had one but decided to try one so we ordered 2.

I did notice that the lady serving us was pretty rude, only said "£3.50" no 'yes that's fine' 'anything else with that?' or '3.50 please' etc. But I thought whatever that's fine as I try to be lenient and relaxed about grumpy/rude strangers as I think they could be having a terrible day or time that we don't know about etc.

Anyway, DP paid, I lifted our shopping bags and DP took the pizza slices from the lady. He hasn't even managed to turn around properly or take a step away from the till/counter and he dropped one of the pizza slices onto the floor - it fell out of the paper bag (there's a split in the side of the pizza paper bags - that's just how they're designed).

The lady watched this happen, ignored it and carried on doing what she was doing. DP picked the pizza slice up from the floor and we both stood for quite a while looking at the lady, waiting for her to respond... but nothing.

We walked outside and DP checked the bottom of the pizza just to see if it may be ok to eat, but there were hairs etc on it. I couldn't spot any bins close by (saw one across the road and further down but the traffic was busy) so I went back in and asked the lady if she could put it in the bin for me (I guess I sort of wanted to make a point as well!) She said "Theres bins outside, nothing I can do about it" and refused to take it. So I put it in the tiny bin for napkins, coffee stirrers etc.

I do appreciate that it is our fault for dropping it, I'm not trying to pass blame onto anybody else. But AIBU to think this is terrible customer service and they should have offered to replace the pizza? Sure, if we'd stepped outside and dropped it on the street I would not expect a new one - that would be completely our responsibility. But for her to hand the pizza over, watch the customer immediately drop it onto the dirty floor and not say or do anything?

While I took the pizza back inside, another customer came out and started talking to DP, basically said he saw what happened and thought they should have replaced it. Said if you knocked a drink or whatever over in McDonald's they'd get you a fresh one straight away. Which I completely agree with.

Yanbu I nearly did the same when I bought a pizza slice from Greggs.

Thepizzabagsarewank · 04/09/2017 12:14

I work in greggs and the pizza bags are a liability. They've got a split right down one side of the bag. I tend to put them inside another bag. I would complain to the manager about the member of staffs attitude. If that was my store we would have cleared it up and given you a new slice free of charge. The dropped pizza would then go into the waste pile.

missmollyhadadolly · 04/09/2017 12:23

Haha, thepizzabagsarewank loved that you name changed for this.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/09/2017 12:32

thepizzabagsarewank

I used to work for Greggs, a long, long time ago. Does the waste food still go 'to the pigs'? Or did foot and mouth put a stop to that?

I always felt bad when the tray for the pigs, which included spoilage and any unsold fresh food like sandwiches, included things like sausage rolls and ham sandwiches, but I'm sure the pigs were quite happy with the leftover cream donuts that were in there as well.

Ribrabrob · 04/09/2017 12:38

I'm on the fence about this, but am a bit confused about why you 'just looked at her' after you dropped the pizza. That seems a bit rude on your behalf, why not just say 'would it be at all possible to get another slice pizza?'. If someone was just staring at me I wouldn't know what they want.

Thepizzabagsarewank · 04/09/2017 12:40

I'm glad my new name is appriciated.

I'm not sure where the waste food goes only that its collected by the delivery driver. That's my least favourite part chucking away perfectly good food.

Nicknacky · 04/09/2017 12:47

Barbara If I have picked up correctly on your use of the word "pigs" then no, we don't get it any more but I think it was our bosses locally that stopped it rather than a national decision (could be wrong though)

Although if you are referring to the actual pink animal then just ignore me lol!!

Urubu · 04/09/2017 12:48

Some people are in a bad mood today......

YANBU OP, they usually replace the item when something like this happens.
And even more as in your case it is the faulty design of the bag that caused the slice to fall.
I would tweet about it, I'm sure they will give you a voucher for a free slice.

Thepizzabagsarewank · 04/09/2017 12:50

Call the store and ask to speak to the manager. There's always one there.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/09/2017 12:53

Sorry, Nick, yes I was talking about the pink animals.

I don't use the term 'pigs' to refer to police officers, apologies if this may have sounded offensive, it never crossed my mind that anyone would interpret my post that way - the Police have to come in and buy their sausage rolls like everyone else Smile

When I worked there, a lot of leftover food also went to a seconds shop in the local market to be sold at half price the next day. Or in certain circumstances it was sent to farms for pig food.

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2017 12:55

But AIBU to think this is terrible customer service and they should have offered to replace the pizza

Well, yes you're being unreasonable. Why did the pair of you just stand there looking at her. Why not just say, "shit, dropped it, can we have another slice", and then expect to pay for it. If she offered it free, bonus, if not just pay. Then to go outside and inspect the bottom to see if you could eat it is fairly disgusting. And if there was bins there why not just put it in.

All very weird op. It's a pizza slice from greggs. Not a hand cooked offering from Heston b.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 04/09/2017 12:58

What a lot of horrible replies. What the hell happened to the idea of MN being a supportive site? Any good shop would replace the pizza without hesitation. Any good sales assistant would be polite, too. Reading some of the replies here, they sound like they've been written by the rude sales assistant herself.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 04/09/2017 12:58

I don't think it matters that this was a relatively cheap item. Many people who shop at Greggs are poor and won't necessarily have the money to buy another one.

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2017 13:00

Reading some of the replies here, they sound like they've been written by the rude sales assistant herself

How rude. The irony is mildly amusing. Grin

Supportive site for someone to get a free bit of pizza cos they dropped theirs? Okay....

Nicknacky · 04/09/2017 13:01

barbara No don't get me wrong I didn't think you were being offensive, I thought maybe you were trying to be subtle lol!

We did used to get the leftovers and it was a good night if there was a chicken New Orleans. CCTV used to shout "suspicious vehicle in the High Street" and some one would go meet it. Ah the good ole days.

Loving that the police AND actual pigs got left overs though.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 04/09/2017 13:01

It wasn't ironic, Bluntness.

No, a supportive site where when someone says something, the rest don't pile in and tell her she's an idiot.

SoftKittySillyKitty · 04/09/2017 13:02

I think she was very unreasonable refusing to put it in the bin for you. With that attitude I certainly wouldn't go back and would log a complaint. My sausage roll would give me indigestion after being served with such rudeness!

honeyroar · 04/09/2017 13:15

She didn't sound like she gave the best customer service in general. I work in customer service and while I sometimes I have to say no, it's HOW you say no that counts. If she couldn't have given you another slice, ie due to policies or something, she could have still said "oh I'm sorry, what a shame, let me put it in the bin for you..." However, on the other hand, if you stood there glaring with an air of entitlement it will possibly get the server's back up. Another factor is how busy was the shop at the time?

Finally, re the waste food, my friend's branch of Gregs gives all their left over bread to her primary school (quite a poor area where lots of children turn up unfed) for them to provide a free breakfast club.

TooManyBigFatLies · 04/09/2017 13:18

Many people who shop at Greggs are poor.

😂😂😂😂

Oh my oh my I didn't realize Greggs was where poor people shop. I better stick to Waitrose then. Hmm

I actually like Greggs - their sandwiches are nice and their coffee is just how I like it. I've always got good service too.

PantPlot · 04/09/2017 13:25

I don't really think the OP needs support over a slice of dropped pizza.

Not a Greggs one anyway.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/09/2017 13:29

I really want a Greggs sausage roll now I think their pizza is crap

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2017 13:38

No, a supportive site where when someone says something, the rest don't pile in and tell her she's an idiot

No one said she was an idiot. That's an awful thing to write. You might want to read the thread. And if you feel she should be universally supported in her quest for a free pizza slice from greggs, then ok fair enough. but maybe accept lots of folks don't feel that's something people particularly need emotional support over and as such it's not rude that their opinion differs from you?

TooManyBigFatLies · 04/09/2017 13:39

Isn't it hilarious what MN'ers can deliberate over. 🤔

missmollyhadadolly · 04/09/2017 13:46

Reading some of the replies here, they sound like they've been written by the rude sales assistant herself

How rude. The irony is mildly amusing

How is it ironic Bluntness? Disguise is saying the assistant was rude, like some people on the thread.

joannegrady90 · 04/09/2017 13:46

Sorry but this made me chuckle 😂

I had to say I've had nothing but loveliness from Greggs.

When dd was 3 she fell over in there, lovely lady gave her a free giant pudsey cookie thing 😊 always liked that place since then!
