Pizza on the floor - AIBU?

Yesterday me and DP popped into Greggs while we were out. I love the pizza slices from there, DP has never had one but decided to try one so we ordered 2.

I did notice that the lady serving us was pretty rude, only said "£3.50" no 'yes that's fine' 'anything else with that?' or '3.50 please' etc. But I thought whatever that's fine as I try to be lenient and relaxed about grumpy/rude strangers as I think they could be having a terrible day or time that we don't know about etc.

Anyway, DP paid, I lifted our shopping bags and DP took the pizza slices from the lady. He hasn't even managed to turn around properly or take a step away from the till/counter and he dropped one of the pizza slices onto the floor - it fell out of the paper bag (there's a split in the side of the pizza paper bags - that's just how they're designed).

The lady watched this happen, ignored it and carried on doing what she was doing. DP picked the pizza slice up from the floor and we both stood for quite a while looking at the lady, waiting for her to respond... but nothing.

We walked outside and DP checked the bottom of the pizza just to see if it may be ok to eat, but there were hairs etc on it. I couldn't spot any bins close by (saw one across the road and further down but the traffic was busy) so I went back in and asked the lady if she could put it in the bin for me (I guess I sort of wanted to make a point as well!) She said "Theres bins outside, nothing I can do about it" and refused to take it. So I put it in the tiny bin for napkins, coffee stirrers etc.

I do appreciate that it is our fault for dropping it, I'm not trying to pass blame onto anybody else. But AIBU to think this is terrible customer service and they should have offered to replace the pizza? Sure, if we'd stepped outside and dropped it on the street I would not expect a new one - that would be completely our responsibility. But for her to hand the pizza over, watch the customer immediately drop it onto the dirty floor and not say or do anything?

While I took the pizza back inside, another customer came out and started talking to DP, basically said he saw what happened and thought they should have replaced it. Said if you knocked a drink or whatever over in McDonald's they'd get you a fresh one straight away. Which I completely agree with.

I would never expect it to be replaced if I dropped it. Why on earth would it?

Recently as I went to pick up a full cup of coffee in a coffee shop I knocked it over. One of the staff came rushing over with a cloth and paper towels and mopped it all up for me. They never suggested replacing it but I didn't expect them to. I was the one who knocked it over

AmberStClare · 04/09/2017 09:49

Disappointed, thought you meant she had dropped it and still served it to you. Now that would be vvvvv bu

SirGawain · 04/09/2017 09:50

OP, It's a Pizza! Nobody died!!

missmollyhadadolly · 04/09/2017 09:52

Good customer service would have ensured she took the dropped one from you and gave you a fresh slice FOC.

That pizza slice cost them 10p to make, the good will you would have taken from that lasts a lifetime.

McDonalds are great at this, as mentioned by a pp.

The people telling you sarcastically to write to your email don't understand customer service.

missmollyhadadolly · 04/09/2017 09:53

Autocorrect failure, I meant MP not email

mydogisthebest · 04/09/2017 09:54

Nothing to do with good customer service. The customer dropped the pizza end of.

missmollyhadadolly · 04/09/2017 09:55

And we can discuss customer service without it being a life or death matter Hmm

I'm sure everyone has a tale to tell about good and bad customer service.

Squeegle · 04/09/2017 09:55

Of course it would be reasonable to replace it! She was just being awkward! yADNBU - however just avoid Greggs next time.

Ahh, OP, you did crack me up with this:

The lady watched this happen, ignored it and carried on doing what she was doing. DP picked the pizza slice up from the floor and we both stood for quite a while looking at the lady, waiting for her to respond... but nothing.

I can just picture you and your DP standing there like a pair of meerkats facing a snake. 😂

It's shite customer service, to be sure. It'd have been kind of her to replace the pizza, but she didn't. Bit rubbish, but there you are.

Squeegle · 04/09/2017 09:57

I love the way people come on here just to be obnoxious to the OP Grin. You have to be brave and resilient to post here Wink

I would have just bought a new one. I would not expect a shop to replace food i dropped.

Ifailed · 04/09/2017 10:01

To all the people saying OP should have got a free replacement slice of pizza, how far away from the counter does this magic rule apply? In the shop, at the doorway, one foot in the shop the other out?

JacquesHammer · 04/09/2017 10:02

If the bag split then personally I think they should have replaced it

It didn't. The OP said the bag has a split in them as that's how they're designed. It didn't break.

Sorry OP but you really can't expect a new item when you've dropped it. Might be nice but there's absolutely no obligation

TooManyBigFatLies · 04/09/2017 10:03

I think inside the shop......but it's not a 'rule' it's just good customer service. It's a nice thing to do.

GabsAlot · 04/09/2017 10:03

she sounds rude but no didnt need to replace it

Squeegle · 04/09/2017 10:05

It's just good customer service- like a PP said, will cost pence, but will leave the customer very happy. Whereas not doing it will save pence and leave the customer writing indignant posts on mumsnet and sharing with all and sundry!

AlternativeTentacle · 04/09/2017 10:10

I think people who shop at Greggs are well aware of what they are getting, a post on here is going to make no difference whatsoever to their market share.

mydogisthebest · 04/09/2017 10:16

It's end of because why on earth should a shop replace something with the CUSTOMER dropped?

I am following this thread because I cannot believe so many entitled people exist

Sittingonthefence83 · 04/09/2017 10:18

I think I'd be more annoyed by the fact she was so rude and to not put it in the bin for you! I think you could complain about that bit.

I'm not sure I'd have expected her to replace pizza slice though.

Really want pizza now!!

Squeegle · 04/09/2017 11:22

mydog; it really is not about entitlement, it's everything about customer service; if you worked in a marketing / customer service role you would understand!

TooManyBigFatLies · 04/09/2017 12:03

MyDog

You are not reading the posts properly then. I don't think anyone has said they think they should be entitled to another slice or words to that effect. Posters are saying it would be 'nice' or 'good customer service' if the lady had replaced the slice.

I don't think anyone has suggested it's anyone's fault other than the OPs DH for dropping it.

If it happened to me I'd be surprised not to be offered another slice. I wouldn't be hoiking or clutching anything 😂 and I wouldn't be 'outraged'. I'd be mildly disappointed- much like the OP 🤷🏻‍♀️

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/09/2017 12:08

I also agree that the OP should have been given another slice. Shops have an allowance for 'spoilages' for things that get dropped, damaged, burnt etc. It's expected and in this case, worth it ten times over for the postive experience to the OP.

If the assistant had been nice to the OP and said 'whoops, let me bin that and give you another one' instead of ignoring her, the OP would have gone away thinking how nice the people in Greggs are. Instead she came away disappointed and told all of Mumsnet about it.
