To think that 30 is a really shit age for fashion?

Unexpected holiday in 3 weeks time. Went to buy some vests/tops for the evening and all of my usual shops (top shop, H&M, River island) are full tiny crop tops which I feel too old to wear and I don't have the figure for The only other alternatives seem to be basic camisole tops which I find a bit boring. I had a look in warehouse and oasis and there's nothing to my taste in there either.

Any ideas?

New look, Dorothy Perkins, Asos,

but then I don't tend to wear 'fashion' i'm one of those weird people who wears vintage/swing dresses from collectif, lindybop and hellbunny.

Trills · 03/09/2017 19:28

What does being 30 have to do with it?

formerbabe · 03/09/2017 19:29

Zara.

Trills · 03/09/2017 19:29

Either the shops don't have anything you like in them - this would be true no matter what age you are.

Or the shops have things that you do like, but you think it's not appropriate for you to wear them at age 30, in which case the problem is your perception of your age, not actually your age.

Idontevencareanymore · 03/09/2017 19:29

Next is good for basic tops or vests.

I do find rIver Island on the young side, makes me feel very much my age.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 03/09/2017 19:30

Oasis I love it although am not quite 30 Grin

Albertschair · 03/09/2017 19:30

What do you want?

Tank top? Pretty lacy cami? I like the strappy vests from joe browns.

Not sure what you ate after

Personally I'm finding my 30s way better fashion wise than my 20s. I finally have money and finally know what sort of things suit my figure

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 03/09/2017 19:30

Mid 30s. I have no idea about appropriate style in the realms between teenage and mature without succumbing to mumsy.

I love my dungarees this year. I seem to be on Blue Peter Presenter style at the moment and I don't know if that's good or not Grin

swearyfred · 03/09/2017 19:32

@Trills I do like a lot of the things in the shops I can't get away with wearing them. I've just turned 30 this week and I've been a bit weird about it. I feel too old to be wearing crop tops and Bardot tops (which is all I seem to see in my usual shops) but also too young to be looking elsewhere.

I guess I'm looking for inbetween shops.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 03/09/2017 19:33

But you're not too old for anything at 30.

swearyfred · 03/09/2017 19:34

Sorry- I don't mean I feel too young to shop elsewhere. I guess it's more about the fact that I don't know where to shop now.

OP posts:
swearyfred · 03/09/2017 19:35

@ItMustBeBedtimeSurely No but I really don't have the figure for a lot of it! I'm a size 10 but have 2 Dc so wobbly 'mum tum'

OP posts:
Trills · 03/09/2017 19:36

Do you know what it is you'd like to see, but you can't see it?

Or do you just not have the foggiest what shape or style of top you want to buy?

swearyfred · 03/09/2017 19:37

@Albertschair I would quite like some pretty cami tops. Other than plain colours I've only managed to find flowery prints which is not really me either.

Will check out Joe Browns- thanks!

swearyfred · 03/09/2017 19:38

@trills I don't have any idea of what I'm actually looking for and I'm very fussy and lacking in self confidence

Thanks Cloth for the tips. I am 44 and struggle too. Have just looked at all of the brands you mentioned and they might work for my type of figure.

ClothEaredBint · 03/09/2017 19:45

they're gorgeous dryclean but be warned, they're also addictive.. I started with 1 dress Christmas 2015, my collection is now somewhere around 50... Blush

Halfsack · 03/09/2017 19:45

A size 10 is the ideal figure for most fashions. A good pair of high waist jeans might make you feel more comfortable about wearing Bardot style tips etc.

MikeUniformMike · 03/09/2017 19:48

If you're not keen on what in the shops, try shops that sell staples. Primark, Uniqlo, M&s etc.
I gave up on fashion years ago as I am still very self conscious, but you are young and have produced beautiful children, so treat to some nice tops and have a wonderful holiday. Please report back on what nice clothes you find.

IndianaMoleWoman · 03/09/2017 19:54

I know exactly what you mean. Been "holiday" shopping today but came home with a pair of winter boots. I'm 35 and have three issues:

a) all the holiday clothes went into the sales around mid-July. By August (when we booked our holiday), all the summer clothes were just a jumble sale type area at the back of the stores, mostly in sizes 6 or 26 leftovers with nothing in between.

b) where the hell am I supposed to shop? Everything is either super trendy for teens/early 20s or frumpy and middle aged. My wibbly mum tum would look ridiculous in a crop top. I feel equally daft in Fat Face/White Stuff/Mataray etc.

c) shops that I used to really like, e.g. Warehouse, seem to have really dropped the quality of their clothing without dropping the prices.

swearyfred · 03/09/2017 20:13

@IndianaMoleWoman Glad to hear it's not just me! After going into my usual shops today I actually thought 'Where do I go next?'

Nightmare!

@MikeUniformMike Thank you so much

@Halfsack I didn't even think of taking jeans on holiday but i have some high waisted white ones which might be good for the evenings actually! I'm going to dog them out

Welcome to the world of UK high street and online retailing. Which has been a disgrace for years.

swearyfred · 03/09/2017 20:15

Thoughts?
