To think that 30 is a really shit age for fashion?

Unexpected holiday in 3 weeks time. Went to buy some vests/tops for the evening and all of my usual shops (top shop, H&M, River island) are full tiny crop tops which I feel too old to wear and I don't have the figure for The only other alternatives seem to be basic camisole tops which I find a bit boring. I had a look in warehouse and oasis and there's nothing to my taste in there either.

Any ideas?

Wear what you want
You're 30! Don't waste it

LaurieMarlow · 03/09/2017 20:21

I'm mid 30s, but I hear ya OP.

Warehouse, Zara, Oasis are my 'go tos'after that I'm all out of ideas.

stopgap · 03/09/2017 20:35

Bloody hell, I wore whatever the hell I wanted at 30. At 40 I will still sometimes wear short dresses, and absolutely wore short denim shorts in the summer.

Camomila · 03/09/2017 20:38

I agree with you! I'm 29 and everything is either too young and cheap looking or too expensive and sophisticated looking. I've definitely lost my fashion mojo since having DS last year.

I pretty much live in skinny jeans and the same handful of tops,

Trills · 03/09/2017 20:39

My main thought is still that you need to get over the "I am 30" thing.

dailyshite · 03/09/2017 20:45

That top is lovely, but....don't waste another minute of your thirties thinking you're too old for anything. It is a number and nothing more, if crop tops don't look good anymore, don't wear them - but not because of your age, because you don't like how they look. Work out what sort of style you like and find a way to wear it which works for you.

MikeUniformMike · 03/09/2017 21:45

Lovely!

Sienna333 · 03/09/2017 21:55

I am early thirties and agree that Topshop and River Island are too young.
I really love Dorothy Perkins at the moment, Zara is good for basic tops and also shop in Matalan and Primark which has good variety.
I would say don't worry about your age when shopping, just wear what you want. Life is too short.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 03/09/2017 22:48

I love top shops Joni jeans though the best high waisted jeans ever! I've had 3 children you wouldn't think so with those bad boys on!

swearyfred · 04/09/2017 09:11

@Cerseilannisterinthesnow I have some Joni jeans. They're lovely with a longer/looser top on but I find my 'kangaroo pouch' is quite noticeable in them with a tighter top.

SwearyFred, I actually rate the M&S £19.50 jeans for hiding the saggy bits. I'm a size 12 normally, I find the size 10 skinny fit well. proper denim not stretchy so holds you in, and not so high waisted that you look like you've got a saggy bum.

I am 32, I generally shop in Zara, H&M for cheaper stuff, pull & bear and bershka when I find one in person anywhere. Mango is good but not really very cheap. Don't discount supermarkets, Asda do nice tops and Tesco occasionally get great jumpsuits in. Oh, and Matalan- sometimes there's nothing, other times there is loads! Great for printed shorts.

swearyfred · 04/09/2017 17:26

@KnobJockey Thanks so much. After reading your post I went in to town and have come back with a few lovely tops from pull and bear and Mango

LOL

I am 37 with 3 dc and wear nothing but topshop / river island / h&m

I wore denim cut off high waisted shorts yesterday with an ACDC t shirt and white leather converse

AND shock horror I wore a neon green bikini on holiday I am size 8

however this thread has educated me that Clearly I am way too old and past it for these kind of thing

swearyfred · 04/09/2017 18:16

@CallingPeopleACuntOnFb Good on you! I know I originally posted with reference to my age being a 'thing' but I've realised now it's not at all (I've just turned 30 and had a bit of a meltdown about it!) and simply just me not feeling confident enough to wear the things that seem to be in my usual shops. I love it all though!

CallingPeopleACuntOnFb · 04/09/2017 18:29

In all seriousness Sweary I look back on pics when I was 30 and I honestly look amazing and so young. 30 is young please please realise that. I only wish I had because when I turned 30 it made me seriously depressed. I dreaded it for about 3 years beforehand I mean how ridiculous

Society and the media seem to value youth and beauty in women above all other attributes. We are constantly bombarded with images of youth and beauty. Is if any wonder many of us feel "past it" when we're barely out of our 20s 😔

As an aside when I got to about 31 I became very interested in feminism and it really opened my eyes. I think the fact I wear what the fuck I like is part of that

MaidOfStars · 04/09/2017 18:33

I'm 40 and sometimes found in a pair of dungaree hot pants.

Trills · 04/09/2017 18:40

Did you read the thread Calling?

If you did, you'd find plenty of people (including the OP now - yay :o ) saying that age is not the issue here.

Trills · 04/09/2017 18:44

(cross posted there!)

Katedotness1963 · 04/09/2017 19:17

You're only 30! Wear whatever you want. Who's going to say anything?
Wait 25 years till your my age!! I'm clueless...

simpaticasimpatica · 04/09/2017 19:18

Cos.

Can't go wrong in that shop

ocelot41 · 04/09/2017 19:18

30 is fine - try mid 40s!

KnobJockey · 05/09/2017 09:45

@swearyfred Glad you found some bits!

I get what you mean about your age. It's not that you are too old, it's that some things are coming in fashion now that teen me would have loved, but now I feel too old for it. I don't want to wear tiny crop tops- the teenage me would have worn them to get attention (and loved it!), I don't need that validation any more. I will wear a fitted dress, I don't feel the need to hug every bump with a body con dress now- I want flattering, or pretty, or kooky, or vintage, not just sexy.

I spent the weekend also wearing dungarees with an alien t-shirt (that I got from Bershka). I also wore my m&s jeans with a run DMC Adidas t-shirt and Nike's. Being older means that I wear stuff that I feel comfy and fun in, which would not be the case with the majority of stuff in Topshop for me personally.

KnobJockey · 05/09/2017 09:46

What did you buy SwearyFred, have any links for us to see?

twinklestar2 · 05/09/2017 09:53

I agree but I'm 38! It's either teeny crop tops or flowery, middle aged stuff! I used to wear the flowery stuff when I was younger but I could get away with it because I was young.

I think it's more my body shape than age which is the problem, after having a baby your body can change and I definitely feel more frumpy.

Show us what you brought, would love to see Smile
