Did anyone have to go into solitary confinement as punishment at school?

I saw an educational psychologist last week as I was suspected to have dyslexia.

She asked about school, explained I was distributive and she asked how they punished. This is secondary school I'm referring to.

It was solitary confinement and she seemed shocked. I always assumed all schools did it and it was better than being canned as they did at my dads school.

If we were in trouble we would have between 1 day and 2 weeks in the what they callled The Focus Room. Depending on how bad we had been.

It would be a room of about 8-10 kids, with dividers in between all of them so the kid could see the teacher but no one else.

You would have a break away from one another and at a different time to the rest of the school. Same at lunch time.

You literally saw no one else and spoke to no one the whole day. Or days depending how bad you were.

I spent a lot of time in the 'Focus Room.'

The ed psych seemed appalled but I just took it as normal. I wondered if anyone else's school had this or similar?

We had a separate school building for children with behavioural disorders as well as a locked department for children with SEN. Also separate lunches.

I wasnt allowed to have lunch with others without either until I was 14. Hated it. We were shut in an empty PC room and left to our own devices or sat in an office.

Nursery was the same though, they had a segregated nursery for children from abusive homes/asylum etc. You had to sign in at the door with ID and there were bars on the windows etc. Was in part of the DSS building. All strange.

There was actually a school opened up here for teenage boys excluded or expelled. They were taken to a house in the countryside/city outskirts and taught manual skills via projects. For example they were asked to assidt with redecorating bathroom blocks at a primary school. They were asked to assist with costing out materials, design, H&S, transport, timing , catering , actually building stuff/re tiling, plumbing .. quitr a bit. Don't know if its still an active school but it worked very well apparently. They would only take males above the age of 13 or something. That was like isolation from a normal school environment but in a very positive way.

I think that's closer to alternative provision.

Isolation in most mainstream schools is where tstudents who've had a big incident go out of circulation or students who repeatedly can't get their head around basic school rules go so teachers can teach and the kids who want to learn can learn.

We have two in today
One had a hilariously bad hair cut and 'won't' go into lessons. She has been given a couple of days to work out this is daft.
Another lad came in very obvious jeans. Parents refused to drop off trousers.

We have long term residents next door
School refuser
Poor behaviour across the board
Social conduct problems

Our afternoon residents are in for the rest of their career with us. Before anyone complains this is an option agreed upon as they have refused managed moves or they have broken down or they have had unsuccessful stays at expensive PRU'S. We then do it in house with teachers teaching one hour lessons and make sure gcse work is completed. We also do life skills and college applications/ support with work experience.

It works but it's hard work. They argue and fight against every.single.thing.you.say.

Is the girl with the bad hair refusing to go to lessons because she's embarrassed about her haircut?

Yes. I have to say she is a character anyway. Very loud and objectionable.
I sat with her yesterday and tried to work through some options but I have a feeling she may be there today as well.
