To help a mangy scrap of fox UPDATE

If anyone remembers/is interested!

(Also I know foxes aren't popular with everyone, please no fox naysers)

Briefly, in March or so I had a beautiful fox called Russel visit me where I live in Wandsworth. Then he turned up with a little scrappy mate. Thought she was a he at first, a really poor thing, all bald across her poor back. I also thought she was a funny shape- she looked very lumpy. I felt awful for her, and got some mange medication, which I gave her as drops on food every single night (foxes are fantastic time keepers if there's a test involved) and she started to improve.

One night she wasn't there, and was away for a few nights. I was so sad. Russel was still showing up though, and would carry his treat off.

Anyway after three nights, she was back- with four little babies in tow. I got to see them all grow up. Every week or so, one of them drops by to say hello. This is Vicky, who came over last night.

Lovely. I know people think they are a nuisance but I love seeing nature in the city.

happypoobum · 03/09/2017 10:11

I was on your original thread. I also had cubs in my garden, the whole family was living under my shed. However, one night we had a really bad storm and they moved out and haven't come back Sad

I am hoping they might come back with a new litter next year though...

Aww such little sweeties 😍 well done you for helping Scrap x

shakeyourcaboose · 03/09/2017 10:13

Beautiful! So pleased to see Scrap's legacy! Followed your original post 😊

HarrietKettleWasHere · 03/09/2017 10:15

The mange treatment I used drops that I got from the Fox Project (they are a fantastic charity, based in Kent I think- look them up on Facebook to see the lovely work they do!) and as Scrap was so reliable at appearing every night (she would wait under my window from 11pm) I managed to get her to take them so regularly that eventually (after a few weeks) I could see they were making a difference. I was about sceptical- but they did work. And none of her beautiful babies ended up with mange either.

This is Scrap with three of her cubs- her fur is short here but a couple of months previously she was bald.

strawberrypenguin · 03/09/2017 10:17

I remember your original thread. How lovely that the babies still visit Smile

tiredbutFINE · 03/09/2017 10:19

Thanks for the update, I remember the original thread. I hope Scrap is ok...bit of a worry she hasn't been seen for a while. The cubs look so healthy!

astoundedgoat · 03/09/2017 10:24

Wait! I know the name Vicky! There were children's books - there was a fox called Vicky... is this who you named her after?

thecatneuterer · 03/09/2017 10:29

That's so lovely. Thanks for the update. I'm pleased the drops work.

astoundedgoat · 03/09/2017 10:30

Run With the Wind, Run Swift Run Free and all the others by Tom McCaughren. They were such great books. I wonder if my 8yo would read them...

Huge childhood flashbacks now.

Do you know the books, OP?

PigletJohn · 03/09/2017 10:32

this isn't the scheme that encourages you to treat them with purified water (aka homoeopathic remedies) is it?

astoundedgoat · 03/09/2017 10:33

I remember this thread from when you posted and I thought you were mad, OP - I couldn't believe that your plan with the drops would work, and felts sure the poor fox was done for - I'm so pleased that you persevered, and probably saved her life. Well done getting the gorgeous pictures!

HarrietKettleWasHere · 03/09/2017 10:33

Yes! That's where Vicky (although they spell it Vickey in the book I think) came from Smile they were great books weren't they astounded.
