To let a 13 year old watch the full monty

The nudity doesn't especially concern me, it's what we have all got after all.
Would you let a 13 year old watch the full monty? I'm thinking more of if there are any unsuitable sexist attitudes in the film.

I'd let a 13 year old watch it

LuxuryWoman2017 · 02/09/2017 13:42

Yes I would. There's not much nudity tbh but there is a lot of swearing.

user1471517900 · 02/09/2017 13:43

Arsenal have a terrible offside trap now. Kids won't understand that bit Grin

pigsDOfly · 02/09/2017 13:44

Yes I'd be okay with that, but I love that film and it's one of the few films I've watched more than once.

As far as the swearing goes, pretty sure there's nothing in it that a 13 year old won't have heard in the school playground or the park.

pigsDOfly · 02/09/2017 13:48

Again, there's also still a hell of a lot of sexist attitudes around in real life. Don't think a 13 yo is going to be unduly influenced by one watching of the Full Monty.

BillBrysonsBeard · 02/09/2017 13:51

It was my nephews favourite film from age 5 onwards Grin

DoesHeWantToOrNot · 02/09/2017 13:59

I watched it at 13.

AlpacaLypse · 02/09/2017 14:00

I think dtds were 13 when we first watched it together. No problem.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 02/09/2017 14:01

The nudity and the language wouldn't bother me but the only part I'd possibly be slightly concerned by is when the young fella attempts suicide.

It really rather upset me but then I am a soft touch.

I'd definitely let them watch it but maybe a little chat after if they need to talk it through.

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 14:01

I'm not sure that I understand arsenal have a terrible offside trap 😀

CockacidalManiac · 02/09/2017 14:01

I'd be happy to let someone that age watch it.

Ah, I'd forgotten that bit. That might be a show stopper, thanks for the heads up.

At the time that the film was made, Arsenal were renowned for winning right games by the odd goal. They were aided by their disciplined and co-ordinated ability to 'trap' their opponents into an offside position, through much practice on the training field; this was mostly in the George Graham, Tony Adams days.
Hence the reference to the choreographed actions in the film.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 02/09/2017 14:05

Actually now I think of it, it's not a bad message in the film. Most of the women work and the men are out of work due to the decline of Sheffield Steel. Robert Carlisle's character is determined to maintain a relationship with his son and will go to any length to achieve that. he and his ex wife are amicable despite the issues. One of the men (John Thompson's character) is unhappy about his weight and his wife reassures him she loves him whatever.

Nobody has an issue with the women going out and having fun - blimey it's quite feminist in many ways. Plus there is the gay relationship between 2 of the men.

So, strong women, men going to great lengths for their families and showing their emotions, a gay relationship nobody bats an eye at and no racism regarding the black characters.

I'm ancient and haven't a clue what that means and no, I'm not googling it - I googled something from on here before and wish I could have bleached my brain Grin

SideOrderofSprouts · 02/09/2017 14:48

I watched it in the cinema at 12 with my mum

NachoAddict · 02/09/2017 14:50

I loved that film and must have been a similar age when i watched it.

Floralnomad · 02/09/2017 14:52

I think it's fine for a 13 yo

SlugKiller · 02/09/2017 14:53

I haven't watched it in years and want to now Smile

pigsDOfly · 02/09/2017 14:55

You're right Luxury about the messages it sends.

Tbh I can't really remember any of it being particularly sexist and the suicide attempt is dealt with in quite a sensitive way really within the context.

And of course, everything come right in the end.

That's not John Thompson, that's Mark Addy!
Love Full Monty. Don't think I'd let a 13 year old watch it though.
LOADS of swearing, and someone attempting to commit suicide.

It is such a brilliant film. I must dig it out for a re-watch. (and explain to my ds what Arsenal were like pre Wengar) Wink

SerfTerf · 02/09/2017 15:05

Great film to watch with 13 year olds.

CoughLaughFart · 02/09/2017 15:10

Even if it did have sexist attitudes, what's the problem? Kids need to understand there are people out there with such attitudes - it doesn't mean you condone them. Would you stop her from watching films featuring racist characters - or would you discuss why the behaviour is wrong?

Personally I think it's massively overrated. As Shirley Bassey said, 'You don't even get to see their cocks at the end'.

metalmum15 · 02/09/2017 15:15

Oh I love that film, need to re-watch it now! Might watch it with my 13 year old. I'm sure the swearing is no worse than what they hear on a daily basis at school, or in any number of youtube videos/current songs. Also, most kids that age are aware that people do commit suicide so maybe that's a good angle to have a chat about it. (Child in dds school committed suicide last year so whole school were aware of it as they had an assembly to honour said child).
