To let a 13 year old watch the full monty

The nudity doesn't especially concern me, it's what we have all got after all.
Would you let a 13 year old watch the full monty? I'm thinking more of if there are any unsuitable sexist attitudes in the film.

That's not John Thompson, that's Mark Addy!

God, you're right, I see John Thompson in that role for some reason. Well I never, I only saw it again fairly recently too.

Racingraccoons · 02/09/2017 15:24

I'd let him watch it! It's a great film!

Dustbunny1900 · 02/09/2017 15:25

I saw it as a kid, thought it was hilarious. But then my dad let me see saving private Ryan at 12 so 🤷🏼‍♀️
I can't think of anything bad about full Monty

TidyDancer · 02/09/2017 15:34

The suicide scene is handled very sensitively so I don't think that's too worrying for a child of 13. The whole film is bloody brilliant. A definite favourite in this house.

LEELULUMPKIN · 02/09/2017 15:39

Absolutely. One of my all time fave films and one I never tire of watching. The only thing wrong with it was it wasn't long enough! Gutted when it finished in the cinema. Coming from "up North" and living through those years and having a Dad thrown on the scrapheap well before his time, I find it incredibly moving. In spite of it's grimness though, it's the joy and optimism which shines through for me. A great lesson for any 13 year old.

AuntieStella · 02/09/2017 15:40

I didn't realise it was a 15, and and somewhat surprised that it is, tbh.

More suitable for a young teen audience than say Woman in Black (12).

Yes, I'd let a secondary school age DC watch it.

scrabbler3 · 02/09/2017 15:44

I'd let a secondary school kid watch it. Lots of important themes to consider, but funny and warm too.

Never heard that Shirley Bassey quote before lol 😂

WinnieTheMe · 02/09/2017 15:48

Oh I love that film! I want to watch it now. I think it's fine for 13 - it's got lots of positive messages about dealing with adversity, and how important family is, and how love takes many forms (the gay relationship, the strong co-parenting relationship between Carlyle and his ex).

bbcessex · 02/09/2017 15:51

It's a great film.
Surprised you're asking tbh...

metalmum15 · 02/09/2017 16:46

I'd imagine op is asking because it's rated 15 so she's probably just checking up on what's not considered suitable viewing for 13 year olds.

MrsFezziwig · 02/09/2017 16:52

Unless your child goes to choir school there's unlikely to be any swearing he hasn't heard in the playground, and overall the film is full of good messages.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/09/2017 17:20

I hated it.

It was depressing and although the message was supposed to be uplifting I found it sad to watch.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/09/2017 17:24

Not a film I chose to stick on again,

Tom Wilkinson is such a watchable actor and he was horrible, much over rated film imho.

Yeah I'd let one of mine watch it and keep quiet that it's shit.

susannahmoodie · 02/09/2017 17:35

If it's 20 yo then I watched it when I was 13.

Forgettheworld · 02/09/2017 17:42

Yes I'd definitely let a 13 year old watch it. I live near the pub it was filmed in so my 5 year old son knows about the film although he's obviously not watched it and won't for a few years.

dollydaydream114 · 02/09/2017 17:45

Absolutely fine for a 13-year-old. It's sweet and funny and uplifting.

gillybeanz · 02/09/2017 17:45

It's of an age they wouldn't understand.
Unless you lived through that time and the devastation to peoples lives you wouldn't understand.
Maybe as a piece of social and political history, if you stopped it and explained it all the time.

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 17:46

^ This. Generally I say no to anything that is a 15 and am reluctant to set a precedent but the request to watch it has been made and I'm thinking of agreeing.

Isn't it on tv tonight?

PinkHeart5911 · 02/09/2017 17:49

Yes I'd let a 13 year old watch it

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 17:53

yes, it's on tonight which is a coincidence - we have the DVD already and were going to watch it some time soon.

Can't really say I 'lived through that time' but I loved it because it is funny and warm. It's pretty clear what is going on so I didn't even need the film stopped and explained to me either. Same as I have never needed films about the various other eras I have not lived through (WW1, WW2, cold war, tudor times, victorian era) stopped and explained to me.

callymarch · 02/09/2017 18:22

Any film I am unsure about I always check out the parental guidence section of the film review site IDMb

m.imdb.com/title/tt0119164/parentalguide?ref_=m_tt_stry_pg

metalmum15 · 02/09/2017 18:51

cally I always use common sense media, it's a great site and has genuine reviews from both adults and kids with their recommendations for what age they think something is suitable for, both films and tv programmes.
