AIBU to sell for more than I paid?

I have a pair of trainers that i got for an absolute steal, i was really lucky and got one of a few pairs that were for sale for less than £30 but these normally go for £125 and you can only buy them from certain websites.

I've tried them twice and they're just a little bit too big for me so I'm going to sell them on, probably on Facebook sites so i can fund other shoes but my friend says i shouldn't ask more than i paid as that's wrong. I was thinking of asking £50/60 as that's still less than half the original price WWYD?

You charge what someone is prepared to pay for them. Your friend has a bizarre way of thinking.

humblesims · 02/09/2017 12:55

Sell them on ebay you will make more. And no YANBU.

SandyDenny · 02/09/2017 12:55

Your friend is bonkers, sell them for as much as you can, no need to feel bad about it.

scurryfunge · 02/09/2017 12:57

Hope your friend doesn't run a business

Fieryfighter · 02/09/2017 12:57

I think it's because I was planning on selling on some running gear selling groups that are community type groups that she thought that i shouldn't profit? It just made me think twice but I'm pretty poor so a profit would be good!

YANBU so long as youre not selling fakes as the real deal its fine. The buyer is still getting them cheaper so its win win

HouseOfGoldandBones · 02/09/2017 12:58

I'm assuming your friend doesn't own a house?

If she does, & assuming she'll not sell that for more than she paid, can you PM me if she's thinking of selling Grin

SomeBerryJam · 02/09/2017 12:58

Sell them for as much as you can get. I bet your friend wouldn't turn the extra money down if it was her....

I agree, sell them on eBay, you'll make more and can put on a reserve, so they don't go for any less than you think they're worth.

Good luck

Candlemiss · 02/09/2017 12:59

YANBU

Ellisandra · 02/09/2017 13:00

I think there's a nice case for sharing the love around, like giving to friend for the same price - or giving part of the profit to charity.

No obligation though!

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 02/09/2017 13:02

My pet hate is when people bulk buy for the sheer purpose of charging double like at christmas.

You didn't do that, it's fair game in my eyes.

DiscoDiva70 · 02/09/2017 13:02

What does your friend think shops (just one example) do?

They sell items for a profit. Every single thing she buys, someone somewhere has profited!

Yanbu.

Fieryfighter · 02/09/2017 13:07

I think she just things out would be nice to sell for what i paid the 'right' thing to do for a fellow runner. I agree it's a nice thing to do but money is tight and i can't realistically replace them for that amount.

Binkybix · 02/09/2017 13:10

If you got them off of the same site I think she has a point.

Curious2468 · 02/09/2017 13:12

I've sold various things for more than I paid over the years, including kids toys, slings and bikes. It's fair enough because the market value of things changes over time. Why would you under price it?

Fieryfighter · 02/09/2017 13:14

No i didn't get them off a fb selling site Binkybix i agree with you if i did.

They were from a reputable online retailer brand new, i assume end of line.

MyOtherProfile · 02/09/2017 13:14

But that's the whole basis of simple economics and supply and demand. You have to find a price the seller is willing to sell for and the buyer is willing to pay.

If you sell for less who will benefit? Will some charity benefit or will some other random person just get a cheap pair of trainers?

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 02/09/2017 13:15

YANBU , get as much as you can for them, why wouldn't you. Friend is being daft.

Binkybix · 02/09/2017 13:16

Fill your boots then! Nice when a little bonus like that comes along.

AnnetteCurtains · 02/09/2017 13:17

Is your friend after a pair then ?

Ttbb · 02/09/2017 13:22

Why would that be wrong? It's called capitalism, without it we would all still be living as peasant farmers.

Branleuse · 02/09/2017 13:26

Does she think all profit making js wrong, even in business, or just if its done by individuals on a small scale?

Sell them for what you can get for tgem

viques · 02/09/2017 13:26

sometimes life hands you an extra large slice of cake. Eat and enjoy, it will make up for the times when you don't get the slice with the walnut.

19lottie82 · 02/09/2017 13:27

You're friends an idiot. It's called demand and supply and a market economy.
You're not forcing anyone to pay anything they don't want to for them. Ignore her.

BabsGanoush · 02/09/2017 13:28

Your friend doesn't want you to profit from the sale - she's jealous.
