To ask the house party opposite to keep the noise down (10pm)

At what point is it reasonable (or unreasonable) to ask someone to keep the noise down?

House party opposite, 17 year old been left on her own and she's having a party. Music blaring and they are out in the garden swearing etc.

It's so loud I can hear it all over the tv. My two young DC's are in bed and keep waking up. I know the "rule" is 11pm but will I look like a cunt asking them to keep it down??

1am would be a reasonable time. Anything before would be mardy-arsed. Especially if it's a one off.

MsHarry · 01/09/2017 22:32

10pm on a Friday at a one -off party is ok in my book. My DD is at a party tonight until 12. Parents are there though. Not sure if outside but most of the parties these days seem to be. 12 seems to be the norm now for this age group.

1DAD2KIDS · 01/09/2017 22:33

I don't mind my neighbours doing it till whatever time as long as its a very rare thing. I think we are all entitled to a good house party now and then. If it was regular like the students that moved next door to me in one of our old houses it would be a different matter. I had to go have a word with them. They didn't speak much English but they got the point and they were good as gold after that. Also I ended up having a drink with them and didn't get back to my wife at the time till an hour and a few shots later (she is no longer my wife).

Notcontent · 01/09/2017 22:34

I would go and speak to them and ask them to keep it down. If we all had loud parties from time to time then no one would get any sleep, because in a street of houses there would always be someone having a late party...

cloudchasing · 01/09/2017 22:34

I don't know which generation some of you belong to, but I never went to a party that finished at 10pm, and I'm 47!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/09/2017 22:34

thatdearoctopus
The Government wrote the 11pm rule.
It's in s2 of the Noise Act 1996.
Roughly ifa noise is being made during night hours then a notice can be served. "Night hours" are defined as 11pm - 7am

MsHarry · 01/09/2017 22:35

Have to say though, this is why I don't have them. Not prepared to leave her unattended and not prepare to listen to that all night or put the neighbours through it. Plenty of other parents are though, which surprises me.

Notcontent · 01/09/2017 22:35

I think midnight is too late if your noise is keeping neighbours awake.

MsHarry · 01/09/2017 22:36

Me too!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/09/2017 22:37

BoneyBack

Highway Code??

(It's actually the Noise Act 1996)

Milkshakebelly · 01/09/2017 22:37

Well they are burning something now and the whole of the house smells like smoke so we've had to close all the windows

Nobody is saying the party has to finish at 10pm, it's perfectly possible to have a party that doesn't cause a disturbance to neighbours. Moving inside after a certain time so noise doesn't travel, turning music down etc.

You don't expect parties to be completely silent, but neither do they have to be at a level where they can be clearly heard in neighbouring houses with windows closed and TVs on. There is a middle ground

ThreeLeggedCat · 01/09/2017 22:39

Also World Health Organisation guidelines define night-time as 11pm-7am.

pictish · 01/09/2017 22:41

It's a one off and it's early. Yabu.

Garlicansapphire · 01/09/2017 22:42

11.30 - midnight.

silverbell64 · 01/09/2017 22:43

Could they be having a BBQ Grin or do you think that you need to call the fire brigade along with the police.

fleshmarketclose · 01/09/2017 22:46

I think midnight would be reasonable to ask them to keep the noise down, before that for a one off occasion is a bit petty. I'd only complain about the noise if it was still really loud about 1.30 tbh.

crazycatgal · 01/09/2017 22:46

It's not unreasonable to ask them to keep the noise down past 11pm. When my friends and I were teens and had parties (I'm 23 now) we wouldn't be outside shouting and making noise, when it's getting late it's nice to be considerate and move things inside. If you want to be extremely loud and rowdy into the early hours then it's best to go out to a club.

Milkshakebelly · 01/09/2017 22:46

silverbell please point out to me where I said I was going to call the police 🤔

OP posts:
millmoo · 01/09/2017 22:49

I think sliverbell was just giving you some advice -she didn't say you were going to phone the police

silverbell64 · 01/09/2017 22:52

You sound pretty unaccepting and precious. Now there's "smoke" coming out???

Milkshakebelly · 01/09/2017 22:56

silverbell you seem to know an awful lot about me 😂 I will ask again considering you are ignoring me - where did I say I was going to ring the police? You sound like a goady fucker but hey ho 🤷🏽‍♀️

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 01/09/2017 22:56

Hang on - you had your windows open & were complaining the noise was waking your kids? Step one would've been closing the windows, regardless of the smoke!

I know it's shit when DC wake up/are tired, but I Di think you're on a massive hiding to nothing asking them to keep it down any time before midnight, tbh. By then I'd expect them to move indoors.

toastandbutterandjam · 01/09/2017 22:57

I went to an excellent party on Monday. Arrived about 7, BBQ, stayed in garden until 10ish then we went inside, party went on till 3am. It was bloody brilliant Grin

I love a party!

silverbell64 · 01/09/2017 22:57

Thanks millmoo, how kind of you to be so nice about me (mean that in a genuine way). I did however say that in a tongue in cheek manner as I think the OP is being pretty ridiculous.
