To think this is a good enough dinner..

Okay, so dinner for the family was (6 year old and toddler);

  • unlimited homemade lentil soup
  • unlimited warm crusty bread and butter
  • unlimited cooked ham

So the 6 year old had 2 big bowls, lots of shredded ham added and few bits of bread and butter

I think that's a perfectly good dinner for a school night (especially given I work)

MIL thinks it's not enough at all....AIBU?

Yum! We quite often have sweet potato soup and cheese scones but yours sounds lovely
Like the ham with it too will do that next week

lavenderpekins · 01/09/2017 21:04

I think I would offer some kind of dessert with that..? But the meal sounds lovely and I have boys!

MumW · 01/09/2017 21:26

Sounds lovely and has reminded me we haven't had homemade soup for ages.

Cranks cookbook has a lovely tomato and lentil soup which we often have with bread and cheese. Preferably grated mature cheddar melted on top of the soup and scooped up with the bread.

helpfulperson · 01/09/2017 21:44

To all those saying 'what vegetables does it have' lentils are a vegetable.

It sounds fab.

Walkingdead11 · 01/09/2017 21:58

They are a legume, not technically a vegetable. Still kudos to the OP, my 6 yr old would be on the phone to childline if I gave her lentil soup.

Lostmyunicorn · 01/09/2017 22:12

Iamyourequal
Total genius - I love "bits of soup"
Mine are keen on lentil soup, the older one so much so that he has learnt how to make it (he's 8).

helpfulperson · 01/09/2017 22:14

According to both the USFD and the NHS they count towards your 5 a day though.

ilovepixie · 01/09/2017 22:32

Could you use that recipe in a soup maker?

Mrskeats · 01/09/2017 22:38

We have homemade minestrone sometimes with fancy bread it's lovely
Has pasta in so it's filling
Sounds a lovely dinner op
Take no notice of silly mil

Bluesrunthegame · 01/09/2017 22:41

This is a lovely dinner and I would like some now please.

I often fed my children on lots of soup and crusty bread. Sometimes I did just one bowl of soup followed by jacket potatoes with cheese if it was a cold winter's evening. My ds1 called it 'poor people's dinner' but I don't know why. Everyone seemed to eat all of this with no arguments, for some reason, and no one was hungry after. Other dinners, lots of discussion.

Mulch · 01/09/2017 22:42

Sounds lovely

Joinourclub · 01/09/2017 22:45

It's fine

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 01/09/2017 22:46

I had this from my aunt. DD had school dinners, so really couldn't face much when she came in. Apparently a bowl of soup, some bread and some kind of cake for pudding wasn't enough. Hmm

The phrase you're searching for is: "Oh, do fuck off, dear. " 😂

AldiAisleOfCrap · 01/09/2017 22:48

It's a nice lunch , but it's not dinner.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 01/09/2017 22:49

Or high tea .

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/09/2017 22:49

If it's eaten at dinnertime it is dinner Confused

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 01/09/2017 22:50

OP I was like that about soup, but instead of lentil it was oxtail.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 01/09/2017 22:50

Giles then no it's not a good enough dinner. But still sounds delicious.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/09/2017 22:52

What's not good enough about it though?

A thick filling soup As much as they want, meat and bread.

I fail to see how it's not substantial

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/09/2017 22:53

If you throw the ham in it, and maybe didn't totally blend the carrots it's pretty much a stew

AldiAisleOfCrap · 01/09/2017 22:54

There is not enough "chew" for dinner. It would be filling, but psychologically disappointing.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/09/2017 22:58

Unless you had porridge for breakfast and a shake for lunch there's plenty of "chew time" the other two meal times. Teas don't have to be heavy all the time

TheRealBiscuitAddict · 01/09/2017 23:02

Lentil soup wouldn't be to my personal taste but other soups would and I have been known to serve home made soup for dinner. Hell on a really rough day I have been known to serve Heinz tinned tomato soup for dinner. Wink Grin

For anyone who says that that's not dinner, that is a personal opinion only.

ponderingprobably · 01/09/2017 23:03

Bread is 'chewy'. If you'd had Shepherd's Pie, that is not very 'chewy' but definitely considered a substantial dinner.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/09/2017 23:04

YABU. It should've been crispy bacon to sprinkle on the soup.

Seriously that sounds like a cracking tea.
