To think this is a good enough dinner..

Okay, so dinner for the family was (6 year old and toddler);

  • unlimited homemade lentil soup
  • unlimited warm crusty bread and butter
  • unlimited cooked ham

So the 6 year old had 2 big bowls, lots of shredded ham added and few bits of bread and butter

I think that's a perfectly good dinner for a school night (especially given I work)

MIL thinks it's not enough at all....AIBU?

Sounds great to me!

cutthegraa · 01/09/2017 17:46

Catchit it's easy - river cottage kids book. They don't do it in slow cooker, but I tried and it's genuinely as good as stove top. I'll find it later and post it up

Actually, last night we had home made soup, crusty bread and butter and a lovely pudding of strawberries, cream and stones. Yum. All my boys, OH and DFath loved it. Your MIL is mental.

Ttbb · 01/09/2017 17:47

Perfectly fine. I assume they've had other stuff, you fruit/veggies throughout the day so why would it be a problem?

KarateKitten · 01/09/2017 17:47

Out of interest what would your MIL classify as a proper dinner??

HateSummer · 01/09/2017 17:47

I'd like the recipe too! My kids love soup, I need some ideas for when they start school next week.

wildbhoysmama · 01/09/2017 17:47

Stones. Ha! Scones obvs.

thepatchworkcat · 01/09/2017 17:49

Sounds delicious and I would be thrilled if my four year old ate lentil soup!

cutthegraa · 01/09/2017 17:49

Honestly the 6 year old is v fussy but loves this soup for some reason. This and tomato soup are the only soups she will touch Wink

Yum!

I may be slightly biased though... OH said yesterday that I 'added lentils to things that wouldn't normally have them'. He was trying to gently criticise my cooking - I ignored him and pretended it was a complement.

FruitBadger · 01/09/2017 17:53

I think that sounds lovely and fine. My DM (70) is firmly of the opinion that soup cannot be a proper meal though and that it is only acceptable as a lunch / supper if you've had a "proper" lunch.

Chestervase1 · 01/09/2017 17:55

I don't think soup is a meal and I don't like lentils. Not too keen on ham either ......

Ragwort · 01/09/2017 17:56

Why on earth is your MIL - or anyone for that matter - commenting on what you serve for dinner? Hmm

Deploycharitygoats · 01/09/2017 17:58

I've made that soup, OP. Bloody delicious, and very filling. Sadly my toddler managed about a teaspoon before refusing the rest.

Ropsleybunny · 01/09/2017 17:58

Have you got any left? Drool....

Sounds delicious. Tell your MIL to mind her own fucking business.

ToastieWarm · 01/09/2017 17:59

YANBU.

I've just dug out my RC cookbook and shall be trting it out on my fussy 6 year old next week.

Did you swear the veg down before putting it into the slow cooker or did you bung it all in together?

AnnetteCurtains · 01/09/2017 17:59

What's it got to do with your MIL ?
Jesus I fed my children on pot noodles and turkey twizzlers sometimes

d270r0 · 01/09/2017 18:00

Sounds great to me. As long as they could have as much as they wanted it should fill them up.

cutthegraa · 01/09/2017 18:00

@toastie I sweated the onion and garlic before slow cooker. Sliced up the carrots in the food processor. Blended it (in the slow cooker) when I got in and added bit more stock!

I think it sounds lovely, I'd have that for dinner even without the cooked ham.

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 01/09/2017 18:01

Can me and DD come over please? Sounds lush!

Cailleach666 · 01/09/2017 18:02

Sounds like a lovely lunch.
Wouldn't cut it for dinner for my lot though.

CakeNinja · 01/09/2017 18:03

Sounds fine to me.
I wouldn't eat it! But it's certainly a substantial enough meal.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/09/2017 18:03

Exactly the kind of meal I would do. Perfectly fine.

I'd be freezing left overs too! What's not a meal about it?

Dentistlakes · 01/09/2017 18:03

Sounds perfect to me! We quite often have soup and bread as a meal.
