To think some people just do not suit makeup?

I have never been beautiful but I was quite fresh faced when I was younger. I was never 'into' makeup in the way some young girls and women are. I also had nice hair so made the most of that.

I have recently had my makeup done professionally for the first time.

It looks terrible! I am distinctly orange hued and I look clownish.

I can't work out what it is. I have very, very dark eyes but they are small so although mascara is the one bit of makeup that I do suit, eyeshadow just overpowers them. My mouth is tiny. Then I have a roundish face so my cheeks are full and hamsterish and blusher looks stupid.

Since starting work I used a bit of foundation and mascara, that's it really.

Do I just accept makeup isn't for me?

If it was orange, it was the wrong shade foundation/powder, or a brand that didn't suit your skin and oxidised.
Try light eyeshadow.
If you want to wear makeup, look up video tutorials specifically for smaller eyes.

You don't have to wear make up, but if you do, just have fun experimenting until you find what works for you.
Cheaper brands like Essence in Wilkos, and Make Up Revolution (superdrug and online), are good for trying different things without breaking the bank.

SantanicoPandemonium · 01/09/2017 12:47

Well applied make up should suit anyone, it sounds like whoever did yours used the wrong colours and too much of it.

FartSmeller · 01/09/2017 12:47

Sounds like you had the wrong makeup!
Not many people suit a full face of heavily applied make up.

Up to you whether you want to wear it though. If you feel happy with what you've got then you are sorted really Smile

PollyFlint · 01/09/2017 12:49

There are a billion and one ways to wear makeup. You can wear a tiny amount, eg just mascara and a bit of lip gloss, or you can go the whole hog and wear a full face - and even then, there are endless different ways to have a full face of makeup too. For example, Kim Kardashian wears a full face of makeup and so does Dita Von Teese, but think how different they look and how odd they might look in each other's makeup. There is nobody who just 'doesn't suit makeup' full stop.

It sounds like the makeup artist just did your makeup badly - or it's also possible that they did it well, but just in a style that wasn't to your taste or wasn't what you expected.

I'd also say that if you aren't used to wearing a lot of makeup, it can feel really strange when you first see a fully 'done' face look back at you from the mirror, so you probably looked perfectly nice to everyone else but just weren't used to seeing such an unfamiliar look. To go from just foundation and mascara to a full face done by a pro makeup artist is quite a leap.

I wear quite a lot of makeup on a daily basis but I often think I look 'wrong' the first time I wear a brighter lipstick or try a different eye look ... but then on the third time I try it, I feel it looks fine.

There's no reason why blusher would look stupid on full cheeks, by the way, and there's no reason why smaller eyes can't take eyeshadow. In fact, well-applied blusher makes full cheeks look slimmer and the right kind of eyeshadow application makes smaller eyes look much bigger, not smaller. So I suspect your makeup artist just wasn't that good.

However, it's absolutely fine not to wear any makeup at all if you prefer the way you look without it. You sound really critical of yourself and your own looks - cut yourself some slack! You probably look lovely to everyone else.

Hastalapasta · 01/09/2017 12:51

I agree! Had my make up done for DSis wedding, looked like a pig in lipstick! For my own wedding I dusted on a little powder, brushed a faint colour on my lids, eyeliner and mascara. Slick of lipgloss and I was done! Generally don't wear makeup so look very different when I do.
Wear it if it makes you comfortable, don't if it doesn't Grin

Ttbb · 01/09/2017 12:51

You're professional make up artist was clearly rubbish. If you looked orange you probably have yellow toned skin (I have same problem) so you need a pink toned foundation, concealer etc. Blush on the other hand should be peachy, so a yellow based pink as opposed to blue based. It should also be applied soaring if your cheeks are already prominent, following your natural blush pattern (e.g. I brush up along my cheek bone from the apple of my cheek twice and one from the apple towards the middle of my jaw). Your moth because it is small should be kept neutral, same for your eyes.

formerbabe · 01/09/2017 12:52

I had my make up done professionally once and it was awful. Certain things that are the norm and make others look good make me look awful. She used powder on my face. Well matched and applied well but powder looks awful on me..I suit a dewy look. False lashes also well applied look awful on me...my features just don't suit it. These things usually make others look better but on me, no way! I do however wear a full face of make up everyday, but I feel I know best what suits me.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 01/09/2017 12:54

I'm with you OP. Can't wear make up at all. Look silly in eyeliner, mascara, blusher and I've never found a lipstick shade that looks remotely ok. BB cream only for me.

NotACleverName · 01/09/2017 12:55

I'd also say play around until you find a look that suits you (if that's what you want to do).

Seconding the Makeup Revolution rec as well. It's good stuff; I love the Fortune Favours The Brave eyeshadow palette and Skin Kiss highlighters (they last all day.)

shimmeringtwilight · 01/09/2017 12:57

I just wore some mascara and a bit of foundation for my own wedding!

I really don't think she did it badly and it was a lovely brand. I just don't suit it!

I get you, OP. Some faces suit makeup better than others. I look better with just eyes made up - add lipstick and it's way overdone. Day to day I wear BB cream and eyeliner, that's it. My BF, however, while she is naturally very beautiful and doesn't 'need' makeup, if she does a full face jobby, looks amazing. She has the right shaped mouth for lipstick, if that makes sense. I have a weird small mouth. I notice Asian girls always look great with makeup (BF is Asian), and most black girls too. So I think skin colour plays a part, and shape/size of facial features.

Trills · 01/09/2017 13:01

I feel that this is like saying "some people don't suit clothes" or "some people don't suit hairstyles".

On the plus side, wearing clothes is compulsory and wearing makeup is optional, so if you don't feel that doing it would be enjoyable or useful then you don't have to bother.

MrsOverTheRoad · 01/09/2017 13:05

It's true that some faces can't "carry" a full face of makeup.

I USED to be able to but not any more. Some girls just always look better even when they're young though.

Argeles · 01/09/2017 13:06

I think it suits everyone, and can really enhance your features, or conceal skin flaws etc.

I do think though that it's necessary to use the correct shades and textures of make up for the individual. How the make up is applied can affect the overall result too. I always apply foundation and eye shadow with my fingers, as I prefer to press them into my skin, rather than using brushes etc. Many people say the opposite too, so I think it just depends.

cakecakecheese · 01/09/2017 13:11

Have you tried No7 at Boots? They do colour match using a magic wand (probably not an actual magic wand) and you'll get colours of foundation, lipstick etc that suit your skin tone.

MorrisZapp · 01/09/2017 13:19

I can't wear make-up because my skin is just too dry. I'm working on it because I'd love to wear foundation etc but I look like sandpaper with makeup on just now.

dudsville · 01/09/2017 13:22

Maybe you don't suit makeup, but definitely second pps who say that if it looked orange it was the wrong shade. It took me 4 attempts to get the right shade of a particular brand. Don't hesitate to go back and explain that it went orange.

toastandbutterandjam · 01/09/2017 13:22

I've put on mascara/lip-gloss maybe 3 times and have never liked it on me. I think it's because i'm used to seeing my plain face everyday - I do look different with it on.

Nobody's ever made a negative comment on it, I just don't like it on me. I've never worn it though, so maybe that's why.

Sashkin · 01/09/2017 13:28

I had a couple of make-up trials before my wedding, and they both aged me by about ten years, and turned me orange. I did my own make-up and looked nice. Some make-up artists seem to do very "made-up" make-up, I prefer a more natural look rather than full Kardashian. I usually only wear BB cream and dye my eyelashes and brows.

Bobbi Brown counters usually have good artists. When I wear full make-up I wear a fair amount (foundation, blusher, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip tint) but it still always looks really natural.

shimmeringtwilight · 01/09/2017 13:29

I think if you have full lips and big eyes then it can look gorgeous. I don't.

OP posts:
HungerOfThePine · 01/09/2017 13:32

I believe that op but mostly when looking at myself. I have a round ish face and big blue eyes and tiny mouth/lips. I tend just to wear tinted moisturiser and eyeliner, mascara and curl them day or night. If I put on any foundation or eyeshadow it just looks wrong, even when I've had it done professionally.

It is probably partly how it's done and what is used but I'm not the type to put in the effort to find out what works, in quite happy with minimal make up.

Only time I've noticed bad makeup jobs is when the colour is obviously too dark and heavy on their skin and a very obvious contouring job.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/09/2017 13:41

No one should look orange if they've had their make up done professionally.

I think she needs to go back to make up school.
I remember when I was getting my nails done and this women on the next table to me was telling us she was a make up artist, and Im promise I'm not being disrespectful when I say this but, She looked like coco the bloody clown. I mean fine if that's the look she's after, but I thought the point of make up was for it to look natural

ViolaViolo · 01/09/2017 13:42

I don't suit a lot of makeup, which is annoying because I love playing with it. My eyes have slightly different levels of hooded-ness, and eyeliner makes this super obvious; I feel like Sloth Fratelli's sister. I also have lots of freckles and curly/messy blonde hair, so I think I suit a fresh-faced look more than elegant or sultry.

I like a sheer foundation (Chantecaille Future Skin FTW), blush, brown mascara, and tinted lip balms.

On the blush, you say it makes you look hamsterish but have you tried a neutral shade? I love Nars blush in Sex Appeal, it's a soft peach that's subtle but pretty and just perks up my face a little - I'm sure MUR or other similar priced brands will have similar shades if you don't fancy Nars prices.

Zaphodsotherhead · 01/09/2017 13:42

I've got a round face, small mouth, normal sized eyes and I look ridiculous in make up. Never ever wore it, apart from the odd go with mascara or eyeliner as a teenager. Maybe a little bit of nude lipstick. Even if I have it done professionally (and I have, on a few occasions, make up party type things, or when my daughter encouraged me on the Benefit stand at local department store) I look ridiculous. Like someone trying to make something very plain look 'pretty'.

But then, I am very plain and always have been. There's no disguising it, but make up looks as though I'm trying to.

QuimReaper · 01/09/2017 13:45

I think the problem was the makeup artist, not the make up. I've come to think it's really only the Top 1% of makeup artists who can actually do a better job than a person with a lifetime's experience of their own skin and features can do.

I wish I had done my own makeup for my wedding. (And my own hair for that matter.) I'm no expert but the artist I had didn't have much skill in adapting her repertoire to actually suit the client, so I looked like Pat Butcher after a night on the tiles. Sad She piled on the makeup a bit either side of my nose which when I'm doing my own makeup I only cover lightly because I know it's prone to cake, and she tried to convince me to wear this emulsion paint on my lips which I don't suit and makes me constantly paranoid that it's gone "bald" in the middle (which isn't what you want to be worrying about on your wedding day).

What really pissed me off was that in the trial she used an eyeliner on me which smudged. I have slightly hooded eyes so that can happen with a big flicky wing, especially if my eyes water or anything, but I knew of a specific eyeliner which never budged on me, so I emailed her about the smudging, and bought a brand new one especially for the wedding. On the day she sort of smiled patronisingly at me and my eyeliner and used her own one which she swore by, had worn for 14hrs at a rave two weeks earlier and would NEVER EVER smudge...

It smudged before I even got down the aisle.

What a waste of money.
