Wibu to wear a white dress to a hen do?

Just as the title says really!

A friend's hen do is coming up and it is 'themed' so everyone will be in fancy dress. I'm quite short on money at the moment so I can't afford to buy a whole new costume that I will only wear once so I'm 'making' an appropriate costume for the theme out of something I already own.

Said dress for the costume is white and lacy (short dress). I know obviously wearing this to the actual wedding would be a complete no no but is wearing it to a hen do ok? Especially if I have silly accessories so it's obvious I'm in fancy dress? Or will I get mistaken for the bride to be and be an embarrassment? Wibu to wear it?

whats the costume op?

DragonsandDungeons · 31/08/2017 21:07

I don't think it's a problem but I'm rubbish at stuff like this.

Papafran · 31/08/2017 21:08

Depends what the costume is. If you're dressing up as a bride, then probably not a great idea. The whole don't wear white thing at weddings is lame anyway. Bridal gowns look totally different to normal white dresses, plus who even cares.

SharkiraSharkira · 31/08/2017 21:13

Hmm don't really want to specify the exact character as it might be a bit outing! It's definitely not a bride but it is a specifically white character if that makes any sense Grin

Bodear · 31/08/2017 21:16

I wouldn't tbh. Is there anything else you have that you can wear?

FartSmeller · 31/08/2017 21:17

I can't see the problem. Maybe depends on what the bride to be is like.

MrTrebus · 31/08/2017 21:18

YABU the bride usually always wears white on a hen do, unless you speak to her about it in advance then YABU.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 31/08/2017 21:20

The bride always wears white on a hen do? Who makes up these ridiculous rules?

SharkiraSharkira · 31/08/2017 21:29

The bride will definitely NOT be wearing white, she has told everyone her character in advance so no one else will choose it - it will be a pretty crazy, over the top kind of costume!

^No, I don't really have anything else I can wear that would work for any of the characters, not without spending lots of money on a completely new costume.

GahBuggerit · 31/08/2017 21:31

Absolutely fine, it's just a night out, especially if it's fancy dress

AmysTiara · 31/08/2017 21:32

I've never heard of the bride wearing white on a hen do. Confused

Yes they often wear a tacky veil but not a white outfit.

You'll be fine. Have a good time.

DorisDangleberry · 31/08/2017 21:33

It is only appropriate if you spill a glass of red wine down the front early on

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 31/08/2017 21:33

YABU the bride usually always wears white on a hen do
What a load of shite Grin I have been to dozens and this is no way true!

VeryCunningStunt · 31/08/2017 21:35

The bride always wears white on a hen do? Who makes up these ridiculous rules?

It's a whole other universe to the one I live in!

NashvilleQueen · 31/08/2017 21:37

Never been to a hen do where bride to be wears white. A veil yes sometimes but never a faux wedding dress. I'm sure your outfit is fine OP.

GahBuggerit · 31/08/2017 21:39

Another one who's never heard of the bride (to be) wearing white on the hen do.

Ecureuil · 31/08/2017 21:39

It's fine.

Also... I've been on approx 20 hen do's and the bride has never worn white!

PoppyH56 · 31/08/2017 21:48

I wouldn't. Everyone will still assume you are the bride even if it is fancy dress. There's a million and one costumes, I'd go for something else!

RhubardGin · 31/08/2017 21:49

I must live on a different planet because every hen do I've been too (and it's ALOT) the bride has always worn a white dress and I'm planning to wear one at mine.

Maybe it's a regional thing because where I am it's the norm for the bride to wear white on her hen doo Confused

So I personally wouldn't OP but I'm in the minority Grin

PoppyH56 · 31/08/2017 21:49

I've been on many a hen do where all of the party are asked to wear black and the bride is asked to buy a white dress/going out outfit. It's happened on the last 3 hens I've been to. So yes I have heard of it!

RhubardGin · 31/08/2017 21:50

Oh and if you go on EBay you can get fancy dress costumes for a tenner so it doesn't have to cost you a lot Smile

Or wear all black and stick cat ears on? Wink

SharkiraSharkira · 31/08/2017 22:11

I have tried eBay but all the costumes I've found that I can afford are either a) from china so wouldn't arrive in time or b) really really skimpy, like something you would wear in the bedroom and I'm too chubby to be going out in something like that!

OP posts:
Happydoingitjusttheonce · 31/08/2017 22:12

It's fancy dress. You might be going as a ghost. Or the pilsbury dough boy. Or a snowman. A polar bear or Jesus. White is entirely appropriate for you hen costume. Enjoy!

SharkiraSharkira · 31/08/2017 22:13

I've never personally been to a hen do where the bride to be has worn white but I'm sure it does happen! This particular b2b is 100% not wearing white though.

Well you can't "usually always" do anything, for a start. But also, utter bollocks. That's not a thing.
