Sold pram on selling site

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2017 17:11

I don't think I am being unreasonable, but just would like a few opinions please!

I recently sold a pram online and the person who bought it came and collected it. All seemed happy and off she went. The pram was only bought by me last summer with a brand new seat and colour pack bought towards the end of the year. The only reason I sold it was because my toddler has outgrown it.

Before selling I hoovered and cleaned all around the pram, seat liner etc. My toddler only came out of the pram two weeks ago when my new one came, so it has only recently had a deep clean!

Anyway the buyer has now contacted me (a week later) saying they are dissatisfied with the pram as it smells strongly of mould, so much so that their daughters clothes now smell of mould and that it is no good, they want the money back to buy a different one.

I am so offended as first of all I know it didn't smell if mould at all, it was spotless, and secondly i feel like they are saying I am not a clean person (my house is bloody spotless!). The pram was only ever stored in the hallway of my house, not in a shed or anything and was left in the sun to fully dry after I washed it down!

So AIBU to have replied saying that it categorically did not smell of mould when I sold it and that it was sold as seen and I would not be given them their money back, they were given the chance to look over it and shouldn't have taken it if they weren't happy with it!

It doesn't take a week to notice a smell of mould. They're trying it on!

pradathescammer · 30/08/2017 17:15

Yanbu they are trying it on!
Your response was perfect.

SheSaidHeSaid · 30/08/2017 17:16

They're definitely trying it on. If it was musty when you sold it to them they'd have noticed it a day later, not a week. I wouldn't be surprised if they left it out in the rain or something and does smell musty now so don't let them bring it back to 'prove' to you it smellss.

KityGlitr · 30/08/2017 17:16

They're trying it on. They bought it 'as seen' and were happy enough with it to take it away and use it for a week. It's a second hand pram, there's no warranty or aftercare. Just reply saying oh that's strange, there was no mould on it or a mouldy scent as they are aware from when they viewed it.

No need to get offended that they're saying your house is filthy though, mould can happen even in clean homes.

WeAreEternal · 30/08/2017 17:17

Absolutely say that.

Alpaca is right, they are clearly trying it on.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 30/08/2017 17:17

I second the trying it on, we had similar with a tent we sold they tried to claim that it wasn't as described. Told them essentially to sling their hook, then saw it back for sale on gumtree using the same description a couple of days later.
Anything we sell now says sold as seen on the description.
They've probably found one cheaper/ broken it.

Ttbb · 30/08/2017 17:17

Th are trying it on. Call them out.

Piffle11 · 30/08/2017 17:18

They are trying it on - maybe to get you to offer a part refund rather than face the hassle of trying to resell. They saw it and accepted it - as far as I'm concerned that's it, no comeback. How would you hide mould?? They don't have a leg to stand on so a firm no and don't enter into any negotiation.

I think it might be a genuine complaint based on the fact you deep cleaned it just before selling it. I find if you deep clean things like carpets etc you can get a musty smell after a while. If it was wet enough that you had to put it in the sun to dry then I expect it could have still been slightly damp in the inside IYSWIM. -

Fruitcorner123 · 30/08/2017 17:21

YANBU I have recently had an experience like this on ebay. It was for for a smaller item which had been posted so I had to assume it was damaged in the post and give full refund. The item was well packaged. I think the person was a chancer who either wanted a free item or didnt like it when they got it but knew I had said no refunds.

You sold this as seen and they have had it for a week so I think you are right. Theyve obviously changed their minds and/ or damaged the pram themselves. stick to your guns.

OnionKnight · 30/08/2017 17:24

They are trying it on.

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2017 17:27

Thank you for the responses, I got a reply saying "ok that is fine". I haven't responded further! I almost replied with "it's a second hand pram, I'm not bloody mothercare!".

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2017 17:32

Itbroke it certainly wasn't sodden, just wiped down, apart from the material seat liner which was left to fully dry on the washing line whilst the pram sat on the decking! It was then all left up as opposed to being folded down. She claims that she has "scrubbed and scrubbed" and it so bad it is ruining her daughters clothes and her friends have commented on the awful smell!

scampimom · 30/08/2017 17:35

Ach, some people just want jam on it, don't they. They've seen a cheaper one and are hoping to guilt you into taking it back. Fact is, they've not been ripped off, they've paid a price they were happy with for a perfectly good item.

NicolasFlamel · 30/08/2017 17:38

yeah she's just being a cheeky fucker.

Evelynismyspyname · 30/08/2017 17:39

A sizeable minority of people who buy things on those sites are absolutely barking, or chancers.

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2017 17:41

Im probably overthinking it but I LOVED that pram and I only got rid of it out of necessity! To be told that something I owned "smells so bad that other people comment" just hurts when I know for a fact it doesn't! The frame had general wear and tear and I actually did point all this out to them, along with a tear in the raincover so I am an honest seller! I just feel really bad now, even though I know I'm not at fault.

Thanks everyone!

blacksax · 30/08/2017 17:53

If it smells so bad that her friends are commenting, then surely she would have noticed any smell when she came to buy it.

Halfsack · 30/08/2017 17:56

You're a private seller not a business. It's a risk you take when buying second hand. Wouldn't give her anything back.

MimsyFluff · 30/08/2017 18:01

How did she pay?

HeavenlyEyes · 30/08/2017 18:02

did they pay PayPal or cash? If PayPal and they collected they can just claim not received and get their money back. If cash - there is nothing they can do.

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2017 18:03

I haven't got the money anyway as used it to pay off the new pushchair I bought for my LO!
Blacksax that what I thought, she was more than happy with it last week when buying it, I even said did she want to think about it and come back later! Oh well, it's done now! Hopefully she'll sell it on if she doesn't want it and someone else will be happy with my lovely pram!

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2017 18:03

She paid cash.
