To think sales assistants should help pack your bag? Too difficult?

I was in b&m today they only had baskets.
I ended use buying quite a bit (quilt cover, curtains, lamp shade etc etc.
Get to the checkout and 1 small basket till is on and huge quee of people waiting.
I get to the till and ask for some bags, she rolls her eyes and gives me 1 tiny bag,I ask for anything bigger? She says no and starts quickly scanning my things through.
She piles everything on top of the 1 carrier and as I'm trying to get it from underneath the items she tells me the price.
I pay using my card and then try and fit everything into my carrier bags.
She stands with her hands folded huffing and puffing and says to the line "sorry about the holdup"
Rather than actually helping me ..
Ended up forgetting my bank card.

I take it you don't shop in Aldi Grin

Fruitcocktail6 · 30/08/2017 13:01

YANBU.

She could've helped, but if she didn't want to do that she could've slowed down a bit and allowed you time to pack.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 30/08/2017 13:01

It was a shock to you when you realised you would need a bag??

Joannearobinson23 · 30/08/2017 13:02

I asked for carrier bags, she gave me 1,then when I asked for enough for my items she rolled her eyes.

Urubu · 30/08/2017 13:03

I would have asked for another bag.

Joannearobinson23 · 30/08/2017 13:03

I have but at least you have your trolley to dump your stuff in in aldi Grin

PandorasXbox · 30/08/2017 13:05

How come you didn't ask for a few more bags?

Underthemoonlight · 30/08/2017 13:05

TBH since they brought the bag charges in most people bring their own bags. They also sell reusable bags at the front of the tills for 60p-£1 in variety of sizes.

GummyGoddess · 30/08/2017 13:06

She didn't need to be so rude about you to the other queuers.

ShotsFired · 30/08/2017 13:06

I get the pressure you feel under at that exact moment in time, but you have steel yourself for it in future. We all say what we "would" do, but in reality it's never that easy is it.

I have done it before and just outright asked them to help/move the bag/don't put things on the bag etc. Despite being a grown woman my legs felt wobbly but it worked.

I even once had a 'forthright' conversation with a checkout lady who deliberately and repeatedly avoided my outstretched hand to put my payment and loyalty cards on the counter in front of me on multiple visits. She has never done it since.

Joannearobinson23 · 30/08/2017 13:07

I wasn't bothered about having to ask for bags,it was the fact she stood with her arms folded waiting for me to pack rather than help and she piled everything on top of the carriers which made it more difficult.

I quite happily take my time in these situations. Unless it's aldi as pp have said!

Hacks me right off when you ask for a carrier bag and they give you a tiny one. If I'm paying 5p for the privilege then I'll super size it thanks!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/08/2017 13:07

I always put my card away properly at the till. I would expect everyone to do the same and always wait patiently behind the imaginary line so as not to pressure them. As long as you were moving your stuff and not arsing about, checking your receipts and rummaging for car keys in the till area, then I would happily wait for you. I'd be judging the till assistant though. She sounds a treat. Hmm

Underthemoonlight · 30/08/2017 13:07

TBH most places don't pack for you the customer is expected to pack the only place that offers is Tesco.

stonecircle · 30/08/2017 13:08

I'd have stood up to her.

I always ask people on the till to slow down if they're going too quickly for me (have progressed from tutting in a passive aggressive manner). Don't care if it results in my shopping then being processed in an exaggerated slow manner.

In response to her not having a bigger bag I would have asked her what she suggested I use in that case and put the ball firmly in her court.

If you'd wanted help packing you could have asked. Personally I hate people doing my packing (especially when they've offered, I've politely declined and they do it anyway Hmm)

propertingz · 30/08/2017 13:08

She was very rude to you.
In discount stores they tend to be I find.

troodiedoo · 30/08/2017 13:08

Shop assistant sounds like HARD WORK.

ExConstance · 30/08/2017 13:09

Even worse in Waitrose where they let people with about 20 items through the 10 items or fewer check out or chat forever to the person in front of you in the queue about their delphiniums etc even when they; have paid and loaded up.

Joannearobinson23 · 30/08/2017 13:09

I know it's not a given but I work for a department store and I would help pack if clearly the person was struggling or bought a lot of items.

YANBU OP I hate it! I feel pressurised by the queue and and up getting cross. If dp is wig me I just leave it to him and walk away, he is much more level headed and calm in those situations haha!

Underthemoonlight · 30/08/2017 13:10

Her attitude wasn't right but it's minor incident in the grand scheme of things sounds like she's maybe having a bad day.

Chestervase1 · 30/08/2017 13:11

It's almost like they don't want you to buy anything. It's funny that a carrier bag can choke a dolphin but there has been no reduction in plastic packaging has there. One bit of plastic is the same as another. I'm fed up with the eye rolls and having everything smashed into a too small bag as well. Funny how if you shop on the internet there is masses of packaging, plastic as well.

propertingz · 30/08/2017 13:11

At least in Aldi they are polite if brisk.

Joannearobinson23 · 30/08/2017 13:11

The woman behind was getting closer and closer to me then as I was packing last few bits, the checkout lady started scanning her things ...
I was getting stressed
Thankfully my bank card is still there so il pop back once I've had a quick cuppa.
