The parents of a 4 year old who stole my 2 year olds glasses off his face and hidden them and refusing to tell anyone even his parents where they are that if they aren't found they will have to pay for replacements.
My 2 year old was playing in neighbours garden when the 4 year old who is alloweded to wonder the street came into the garden and took my dc glasses off his face and ran off with them. I was at doctors with my other dc when i came back asked where they were and was told. Now they seem lost and the child is refusing to tell anyone where they are. Would it be wrong to tell his parent's they will have tp pay if they aren't found?

Your 2 year old should get free replacements but that's not the point. Have you spoken to the parents yet?

AlmostAJillSandwich · 29/08/2017 16:57

Of course yanbu! Your poor child cant see and glasses arent heap!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 29/08/2017 16:58

Why the hell have his parents not appologised profusely embarrassed as hell and insisted on paying to replace? Who knows what hes done with them or what state they are in. They should replace them if they are returned damaged too.

Mrscropley · 29/08/2017 16:58

It's theft so maybe give them the chance to cough up or report them to the police.

Aspieparent · 29/08/2017 17:01

He wont get any free replacements as he broke some at nursery and had to get them replaced in april and that was the only free ones hes allowed.
Lucikly he has a back up pair but i ahve nothing if something happens to these.
Not been able to speak to them yet as am in house with a very ill dc so husband is going to speak to them once hes home from work and i have sent my eldest dc down to tell them

Report a 4yo to the police??? Confused Grin

PurpleMinionMummy · 29/08/2017 17:01

The police can't do anything about a 4 yo stealing Hmm

Yanbu in theory op. Although I assume he can get free replacements? That's not the point though when it's a hassle to get them.

dementedpixie · 29/08/2017 17:01

I am sure he is entitled to more than one replacement at that age!

PurpleMinionMummy · 29/08/2017 17:02

In that case no yanbu. Ask them to pay.

LurkingHusband · 29/08/2017 17:09

What a terrible story OP Sad

The police can't do anything about a 4 yo stealing

Legal curiosity leads me to wonder what the outcome of a civil case against the parents might be, if there's an expectation than parents should be in control of a 4-year old HmmHmmHmmHmmHmm

Ceto · 29/08/2017 17:10

Mrscropley, it isn't theft by the parents, and the child is too young to be criminally liable.

But yes, of course they should pay up. They may be able to claim on their household insurance.

Flyingflipflop · 29/08/2017 17:12

It's theft so maybe give them the chance to cough up or report them to the police.

Do they make handcuffs to fit four year olds?

Aspieparent · 29/08/2017 17:13

No hes not allowed more than one replacememt.
Will see what dh gets said.

You can't repost a 4 year old to the fuzzGrinGrinGrin

I would ask them to pay...or I'd knock and when they answer the door I'd nip in, steal something and say they can have it back when you get the glasses back

LurkingHusband · 29/08/2017 17:13

Mrscropley, it isn't theft by the parents, and the child is too young to be criminally liable.

But the question is are the parents responsible ? If so, they are liable in law (which can be enforced by a court).

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 29/08/2017 17:13

Report*

dementedpixie · 29/08/2017 17:15

Your optician is not very understanding then. I'm sure dd got multiple replacements and she had gases from 18 months old

Flyingflipflop · 29/08/2017 17:16

Why report Witty? Who are you reporting?

Almost as nonsensical as reporting a four year old to the police.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 29/08/2017 17:18

I was correcting my typo above flipflop.

Aspieparent · 29/08/2017 17:19

We are with specsavers opticians

OP posts:
cantthinkofanythingwitty · 29/08/2017 17:19

Flying, she put report* as a correction as she wrote repost in her previous message

Bubblysqueak · 29/08/2017 17:19

You are able to get multiple replacements of nhs glasses, but if they are the free second pair (from Specsavers ) then they won't be replaced. 5yr old d's is on first name terms with all staff in our local specsavers. In the 12 months between eye tests he had 9 replacement pairs Blush

winchesterfan · 29/08/2017 17:29

To be honest if the parents can't get the child to tell them where the glasses are or they parents aren't bothered, then I would contact the police.
Maybe a policeman coming to speak to the child will stop him thinking he can take other people's things.

Jaxhog · 29/08/2017 17:31

Who was supervising them? They are responsible for replacing the glasses.

sendcoffee · 29/08/2017 17:33

Just wanted to say my 3yr old also has specsavers glasses and we've been in and has them fixed or replaced regularly since he got them.
You just go in and fill out a form for a replacement pair. One pair is covered free by the NHS for repair or replacement the second pair isn't.
