Literally stop literally saying "Literally"!

I wish people would stop saying "literally" all the time!

A load of friends came over today, and so many were saying "literally" over and over again.

"It was literally so hot in the car, I literally was sweating despite the air con."
"You literally just press that button."
"It's literally as easy as that. I literally love it."

AIBU to think this is annoying and stupid?

It's like literally all people say, like Wink

FallingOrbit · 28/08/2017 17:30

Excessive over-usage is literally quite annoying. But then the odd few utterings literally shouldn't be too much of a problem.

theymademejoin · 28/08/2017 17:32

It's much better than the people who literally died when they realised they were embarrassed.

Allwashedup · 28/08/2017 17:32

Amazing, bear with me, nightmare, basically....Hmm

AMightyOak · 28/08/2017 17:32

At least those are proper uses of literally.

My head literally exploded.
He ran so fast he literally took off.
I literally killed her because I was so angry.

Those are much worse.

silverbell64 · 28/08/2017 17:34

Did they "reach out" to others at the time Grin

ILoveGrammar0 · 28/08/2017 17:36

"You literally scared me to death."

No, I figuratively scared you to death.

FallingOrbit · 28/08/2017 17:36

Oh and how could I forget..... it's nowhere near as annoying as "actually" every other word.

"OMG I actually DIED!"
"I was actually so hungry I actually almost ate the actual plate"
"Actually, that's not actually what I actually said"

Head/desk.

FlandersRocks · 28/08/2017 17:37

It is, yanbu.

Ds1 has recently picked up this bad habit and was using it completely incorrectly to boot. 'I literally was sweating gallons', 'my stomach was literally eating itself I was so hungry'. Um no, neither of those things were literally happening were they? Angry

Anyway, I started pulling him up on it every single time. And then dh said 'you do know he's got that from you? You say it all the time'. Hence ensued an argument about it with me adamant I don't.

Dh has now started pulling me up on it to prove me wrong and he's right...I say it often Blush . I use it correctly...only when that literally is the case Grin But still. I annoy myself now.

LuLuuuuuuu · 28/08/2017 17:38

Why didn't you tell them that then OP ?

Sparklingbrook · 28/08/2017 17:38

Can't get worked up about literally. The 'like' thing winds me up.

silverbell64 · 28/08/2017 17:40

Anything said excessively if bloody annoying. However, I can't stand Americanisms.

"I'm reaching out/thank you for reaching out"

Reaching out for what?

"Happy Monday"

Err no I'm not happy, not happy at all its sodding Monday!

ToeKneeChestNut · 28/08/2017 17:40

Why didn't I tell them? To stop? Because I'd rather store it up, seethe and rant to randoms online of course. :D

TheWeeWitch · 28/08/2017 17:41

Are your friends Chris Traeger?

MadisonAvenue · 28/08/2017 17:41

Literally winds me up, and another is when people say that they can't cope with something, as in "that puppy is so cute, I can't cope". Yes you can love, just get a grip.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 28/08/2017 17:43

Kids are good for making you realise things you over say. My dd kept on saying actually and it was really starting to annoy me then I realised she had actually got it from actually me... she now has started saying literally so I realised I must've actually starting literally saying literally actually quite a lot Grin

dragonwarrior · 28/08/2017 17:46

It happens to the best of us.

Sometimes I pick it up from other people, sometimes I say it in a take the piss kind of way and it sticks in my main vocabulary.

My current one I hear myself say (& cringe inside) is legit.

Argh

MadisonAvenue · 28/08/2017 18:53

Thought of another which I dislike. Being 'super' excited or super whatever.

RuggerHug · 28/08/2017 18:55

My cousin used to mark college essays. One said 'in X year the population of Y literally exploded'. How she took the rest seriously I do not know.

The first time I came across literally used in this way was in a conversation with a woman about her mother who was very old and was going to her first ever live concert; she was 'literally beside herself' apparently. Okay.

Ronnyhotdog · 28/08/2017 19:22

Obviously is another annoyance, especially when what they are saying isn't obvious at all. It literally drives me mad, obviously.

ginghamstarfish · 28/08/2017 19:27

I started reading a book the other day, and stopped when it said '... her father had kittens, literally ...' actually meaning he was worried about something. I gave up.
