Literally stop literally saying "Literally"!

I wish people would stop saying "literally" all the time!

A load of friends came over today, and so many were saying "literally" over and over again.

"It was literally so hot in the car, I literally was sweating despite the air con."
"You literally just press that button."
"It's literally as easy as that. I literally love it."

AIBU to think this is annoying and stupid?

Ronny, I'm so glad someone else has noticed the ridiculous and inappropriate use of "obviously"! It makes me want to punch people.

I know a couple of people who use it at every pause for breath. It literally makes my blood boil. Wink

KinkyAfro · 28/08/2017 19:35

Basically is much worse

McTufty · 28/08/2017 19:35

YABU I love saying literally, it's a great word Grin

shivermytimbers · 28/08/2017 19:39

"To be fair" is another one that winds me up. Often when there was no need to mention fairness!
DD the other day said "It was literally the best roast dinner I'd ever had and, to be fair, the potatoes were really crispy"
A double whammy of nonsense!

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:40

People aren't intelligent enough to understand the joy in using the word literally. Infact the fun has been drained out of it! As has obviously. Angry

silverbell64 · 28/08/2017 19:40

I say "to be fair" on here as that's exactly what I'm being:)

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:41

Honestly!!! Shock

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:42

Most people that say tbf usually end with some unfair comment.
The same as "I'm not being funny but"

No you're just a knob. Not a funny one either!

shivermytimbers · 28/08/2017 19:44

But with DD nobody had been treating the roast potatoes unfairly to the best of my knowledge Confused

McTufty · 28/08/2017 19:45

I love shortening to be fair to tbf and to be honest to tbh. I also say legit.

I'm an awful person aren't I?Shock

Shyposter · 28/08/2017 19:46

And don't forget the people who literally start every sentence with So...

So I was like literally running like the wind and my feet literally weren't touching the ground... So I was literally flying down the road

shivermytimbers · 28/08/2017 19:46

Another recent gem was "I'm going to the bus stop now because, to be fair, the bus is due pretty soon".
Who had been bullying the bus about its arrival times?

silverbell64 · 28/08/2017 19:46

Err, domesticated that's a bit of a nasty comment. I find people that use the word "knob" to be one themselves Grin after all it takes one to know one.

Argeles · 28/08/2017 19:48

'Basically' is the word frequently used that fills me with rage - usually when it's at the beginning of a sentence.

IndianaMoleWoman · 28/08/2017 19:48

Just say "metaphorically" or "hyperbolically" in your own sentences, every time you don't literally mean what you say. "It was so hot, I was metaphorically sweating my tits off." "Going back to work after the Bank Holiday is hyperbolically the worst thing that has ever happened to me." If anyone questions you, just say you were worried that people thought you were being literal so you felt the need to clarify.

shivermytimbers · 28/08/2017 19:49

So, to be fair, I literally just used the word knob on another thread Blush

MrsJayy · 28/08/2017 19:49

Literally punch them in the face Grin my Dd says Legit it drives me nuts .

Silver that is a fair comment, infact sometimes I am a knob. Not literally though!

gabsdot · 28/08/2017 19:54

One of my son's favourite expressions is to say " I literally died".

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 19:55

What a delightful child. Does he watch Jeremy Kyle much? Or just have particularly chavvy friends?

shivermytimbers · 28/08/2017 19:59

Bloody hell domesticated! That's a bit of a leap

ForalltheSaints · 28/08/2017 19:59

YANBU.

Same for the overuse of the word Big, having to add a couple of words before 'sorry' or 'apologies', and most of all, overuse of 'like'.

domesticatedidiot · 28/08/2017 20:03

Accurate enough. Does he gesticulate while he does it?

user1483390742 · 28/08/2017 20:06

You should literally watch this then...
