To think now is not the time to employ someone to clip your hedge

Neighbours have got garden company in who started clipping the hedge with noisy strimmers at 8am on bank holiday Monday. Our bedroom is at the front and it's boiling here so windows open.

Neighbours are nowhere to be seen and IWBU to be angry with gardeners. DD only 7 days old so my judgement may be impaired but DH had just taken her after feed so that I could nap Sad

Oh dear. I want to strim various garden bits today, but I'm holding off until 10am for the sake of the neighbours.

DonnatellaLyman · 28/08/2017 08:26

10am is fine! It's a good day for gardening just not that early

Gartenzwerg · 28/08/2017 08:26

Yes, extremely tight. Especially if they are using petrol strimmers which are super noisy. Get your own back in years to come with some early outdoor play with your DD.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 28/08/2017 08:28

Making noise like that is prohibited before 9am on a Bank Holiday. Go and tell them!

Cambionome · 28/08/2017 08:29

They are being totally unreasonable!! Angry

Showandtell · 28/08/2017 08:31

8am is fine!!

We live in the middle of fields and the farmer was doing something at 6am this morning.

BellaGoth · 28/08/2017 08:31

That's absolutely ridiculous. My DH is a tradesman. If he has to work at weekends or bank holidays he won't do anything noisy before 10am. It's just courtesy. I'd be fuming OP!

wonkylegs · 28/08/2017 08:34

It's not very neighbourly but unlikely to be 'not permitted' unless your area has specific noise control orders.
They may have been squeezed in by the gardeners and therefore just took what they could get. I know ours have been extremely busy this summer and have started early and finished late to just get all the jobs in.
Yes it's rude and a bit annoying especially when you have a new baby but I suspect there is little you can do but hope they finish quickly

PseudoBadger · 28/08/2017 08:35

So do we! North London? Not bothering us sleep-wise as we have been up for ages but it is annoying.

bellabasset · 28/08/2017 08:39

They are probably using petrol hedge cutters, and due to wet weather this summer many gardeners will be taking advantage of the sunny weather to catch up. It is a normal time for gardeners to start round here, although I understand how when you are feeling exhausted the noise through an open window is really stressful. Has DH had a word with them?

Congratulations on DD, and I hope you get some sleep soon.

waitingforlifetostart · 28/08/2017 08:41

They are being unreasonable. It's bank holiday and many will be hoping for a lie in.

Neutrogena · 28/08/2017 08:42

8am is fine.
Please stop being so intolerant of others getting on with their lives. The world does not revolve round your baby.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 28/08/2017 08:46

I kind of think bank holidays and weekends are considered as sacred is not real world anymore.
I can name one person who has weekends off as standard.
I think 8am is fine

Kittysparks1 · 28/08/2017 08:50

Ah drives me nuts when this happens. My neighbour likes to sit on his doorstep practicing his guitar with the amp and bass turned to full volume and all his doors and windows open, and he is crap. You can hear it for miles away.

You need ear plugs. If DH has your DD then you don't need to hear anything. I depend heavily on ear plugs thanks to my neighbour!

Cabininthewoods69 · 28/08/2017 08:53

I feel 10 am is reasonable or at least a warning note 5hrough the door from them

SuperBeagle · 28/08/2017 08:55

8am is fine, IMO.

bloodymaria · 28/08/2017 08:55

8am is fine, part and parcel of having neighbours.
Tbh I'd consider it a long lie these days (thanks DD).

Chottie · 28/08/2017 08:58

OP - I agree and think 8am is not fine on a BH Monday.

Yesterday for the first Sunday I could remember, there was no-one cutting lawns, power washing cars / patios or using strimmers or hedge cutters near us. The peace and calm was just blissful.......

NeedsAsockamnesty · 28/08/2017 08:58

It's banned before 9am around here

Ceto · 28/08/2017 09:04

DH deliberately held off till 10 a.m. yesterday to start mowing our lawn. 8 a.m. is definitely not fine for a Bank Holiday Monday.

DonnatellaLyman · 28/08/2017 09:05

the world doesn't revolve around your baby

Pretty sure I said she was a reason I might be being unreasonable rather than a reason no one else should do anything! Confused

Yeah no point saying things to gardeners, they are only doing their job, and I don't envy them having to work. Just wanted a moan really!

OP posts:
Showandtell · 28/08/2017 09:06

Having said 8am is fine I have just seen dh wandering around with hedge clippers and said please don't start until 10!!

GunnyHighway · 28/08/2017 09:09

Get yourself to Germany, it's against the law to mow the lawn and even put washing out on a Sunday/bank holiday.

Checklist · 28/08/2017 09:13

This from the RSPB website:

Hedge cutting and the law
We recommend cutting hedges and trees is avoided between March and August as this is the main breeding season for nesting birds.

It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.

It will be an intentional act, for example, if you or your neighbour know there is an active nest in the hedge and still cut the hedge, damaging or destroying the nest in the process.

Our neighbour is an obsessive hedge trimmer, it's 9.15am and he's not yet started so I think 8am is too early. However he has started the DIY
